1. I remember you posting about using a Dean Markley guitar string as a high F- I think that's what got me thinking. I dig the Elixirs because although they're expensive, the only reason I have to change them (so far) is if I decide to change gauge- I never break strings (except once on a school double bass!) and my 4 string I use for practice sounds far better with year old strings than my Conklin does with 6 mth old Overwaters. I should probably change them one of these days
2. Cheers WalMan- I'm sure I tried that before? Maybe I am thick. C'est la vie.
3.
Yeah, I used to use Overwater 6 string sets, but find that they dont last too long. Ideally, i'd probably use Elixirs, I love my Elixir string on the 6, they're phenomenal! I've emailed them to see if they can wind me something to use as an F string. If not, I reckon trying something like the S.I.T strings would be worthwile! Is it noticeable having the core in contact with the bridge? You're not planning on ordering any more are you? Could go halves on the shipping and get some each? If not, I've just had a reply from Bill Conklin, and might order a set of his Snakeskin ones to try. I definitely do like Elixirs though... hmm The coating is coming off a little bit where I play over the PUs, but they still have an almost piano like clarity, really bright, great sounds and feel!!!
Let me know how you get on there- I also use Elixirs on my 4 and 5 string and rather like them. I wonder if a guitar string would be long enough? I would definitely order a set or three if you can get them to do 7 string sets!
4. I'm interested in theory but won't know if I can actually come til closer to the time, work and ride sharing (and Mrs VK) permitting.
5. Do you get a bulk discount on these now Peter?
6. I've got a fretted and fretless 5 string of this model and yours is definitely backwards compared to them. Probably someone at the factory got their wires crossed!
7. I string my 7 BEADGBE- the only strings I've used are Overwaters (which I would have thought would be good for you!). They're a LOT cheaper than buying the Conklins (which I was considering)- the OWs are only about £21 a set IIRC. I'm no strings expert though, so as ever, YMMV, but I would be loath to drop $50-60 +delivery getting a set from the states when I can get 2 from the UK for the same price.
8.
Velvet: if it doesnt shift I am in Glasgow, so if the cash manifest
I wish. Another bass in this house and I'm dead meat.
9. You would have to post this the day after I go and buy a brand new looper? Some people
10. God damn you have nice taste in basses. Wish I had the cash for this.
11. I would get yourself along to the Violin Shop in Glasgow and see what they have in stock- they have a good selection and you can try before you buy. They do the full range as well so you can see how the cheaper bows compare to the more expensive ones.
12. You can always turn it down...
13. Am I being thick? I can't find you at all- found your personal page but not your music. Help!
14. Hi all, I have three fretted basses in varying degrees of requiring a fret dress- one is pretty much unplayable with any kind of decent action. Is it feasible to do this yourself with minimal tooling, or is it best left to a professional? My local guitar shops are quoting £70-£100 to have this kind of work done. If its possible, what would I need? Any references to assist? I'm relatively comfortable with adjusting the bridge and truss rod but that's not enough for this one. Cheers Kyle
15. Well I bought the Digitech new locally, mainly as an impulse buy- decided to put my money where my mouth is for once and support my local independent shop. Will report back after I've played with it some.
16.
If you are notating something expressly written where all strings are detuned then the piece should be written as if strings were in standard tuning. E.g. if you detune the strings to Eb/Ab/Db/Gb and the first note is open Eb it makes more sense to write the music in E as it what you will feel and see. Writing at pitch means you have to relearn the whole fretboard just for that piece (e.g. C is now B, F is now E). If you are transposing a tune from one key to another it obviously makes sense to write at pitch.
What he said, although there is a certain amount of flexibility depending on the nature of the piece.
17.
i logged in today to ask if anyone had the sheet score for Pachelbels Canon in D, and I've found it in approx 3mins since logging on....all thanks to you! I'll getcha a drink next time you're in Newbury!
Mine's a Czech lager! Cheers!
18. 'kin hell man that's awesome. Maybe time for a Glasgow bassbash soon?
19. The Simandl Method books (Vols 1 and 2) are pretty much the standard for DB methods- classically oriented but you can certainly play through the exercises pizz as well.
20. Hey all, rediscovered this recently- I mentioned it briefly in the classical music thread in off topic but its a great resource. IMSLP.org Any composer who has editions now in the public domain can be included, so if you fancy transcribing some Bach, listening to Beethoven's 9th with the score or doing a multitracked bass version of the Symphonie Fantastique this might come in handy. They're all PDF files I think and totally legal. Read on!
21.
Peavey Milestone III http://www.hartnollguitars.co.uk/products.asp?id=748 For a while I had one of these and a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass - decided there was nothing to choose between them in sound - except the Peavey was quieter for recording - and actually preferred the feel of the Peavey, so sold the Fender.
+1 My first bass and the only 4 string I think I'll ever need.
22. I have this book which is rather good for less than the price of a couple of pints. I also have a couple of basic piano transcriptions I can post if there's any desire for them.
23. The DL-8 is down to £105 delivered brand new...
