  1. My favourite Rotos of all time were Superwound 505s. Pressurewound, tapered ends. This was late 70's, they weren't around for long, very pricey at the time. But very nice!
  2. Have Chromes on a Yamaha BB414 and Cobalt flats on a P. Price is similar, as is sound. Initially, the Cobalts a very bright, as they should be, they are a round with a ribbon overwound. But as with both brands, after a couple of yoears, they both just sound like nice flats! Edited to add that I'd buy either of these again, but now the rock band's finished, probably Chromes.
  3. Used Roto RB40s for years, liked the priced and the fact that they were unsilked. Two sets per year per bass. Then got into flats, and I'm not going back. Roto flats too stiff and heavy, so that's it for me and Rotosound. However, IMHO, good rounds and a good company to deal with.
  4. Have played several gigs with mine now. There has been the occasional dropout, but repositioning, and learning these foibles, has reduced that to zero by the last gig. I have only one more gig with the rock band, the grand NYE finale at Tavistock Wharf. Will see how it pans out for battery life there, that gig will be one 90-minute and one of around 120.
  5. Because in my case, the future isn't expanding. This will simply do the job I need it to do. No point in overthinking it if I don't need to! Edit: and money is also an issue, so this solves a problem without breaking the (very tightly constrained) bank.
  6. The latency is only important if it affects you. If, for whatever reason, you don't notice it, then it's irrelevant... If something in your setup changes and you begin to notice, then fine, react to it. Otherwise: rock on!
  7. Back to the original question: I used one of these the other night, and it was fine. I am usually on top of my amp, and my cables are in need of replacing, because I'm always standing on the damn things. So I like being untethered, no matter what. Even if I'm sat on the amp. I use no other pedals whatever except a tuner, occasionally not even that, so didn't notice latency. Our younger guitarist was also using one, and his pedalboard has its own postcode, with LOTS of effects, analogue and digital. No noticeable latency, and no crosstalk between the two. I've ordered a gold one direct from China, £26 delivered. I'll also be having a dead Smoothhound for repairs and see if I can resuscitate it.
  8. I think the premise is largely true. The endless gear hunt stops when you realise what it is you want from gear, then get the gear that will achieve that. If it's pricey, so be it, but as you won't be buying any more, what does it matter? I've got a good rig, which I like. It will go soon to be downsized (age/need). My bass is a Fender hybrid I put together myself, and it all just works. I plug in and go, no pedals except a tuner. These days, I could probably halve the size of my car...
  9. He's been before, and knows the drill! 😀
  10. Be quick, they're selling fast!
  11. Actually, it was my 2nd - the first was a 69! Certainly wish I still had that 96 though...it were a right cracker!
  12. A bit like a time machine. Odd doorway in a back street. Cheap beer! Good stage with ample power points. If you use your own PA, you get 100% of the door.
  13. Goog gig at the Palladium Club in Bideford. Just a fun place to play!
  14. No. Years ago, I had a cracking 1996 51 P-bass re-issue. Then, when the London Guitar Show got rebooted, I had a go on a 55 CS Precision. Mine was better in every way that I could tell, except that this had heavy flats on and mine had TI Jazz Flats. Not long after that, I began to put together 'Fenders' built as I wanted them, and have had a much better playing experience all round. CS are very well made, but not very characterful, if you like.
  15. It will be a (hopefully) sold-out night at the Wharf here in Tavistock, so we should go out on a big high!
  16. Beyond special projects, this is surely a solution looking for a problem...
  17. Can someone please point me at the place where the "never play open strings" sh*te comes from?
  18. On New Year's Eve 2018, my band, The Rock 'n' Roll Outlaws will play its final gig. Our founder and guitarist/vocalist is leaving for a better life in Oz, and with a young family, what a good idea that is. For me, it will mean the end of playing any rock, in an effort to preserve what's left of my hearing. I do have other things on the cards, but much quieter. To that end, the faithful Markbass rig is planned to be replace with a Trace Elliot Elf or similar, and a Barefaced 110. I might even downsize the car... It's timely anyhow. I'm likely to have a reverse shoulder replacement in the first part of the year, due to the irreparable damge from the cycling accident. So lightweight is now a medical must as well as a convenience. So, new year, new...everything!
  19. Wedding gig in mid-Cornwall. All good, plenty of folk we knew, so good crowd. Main bass dead out of the case. Just an earthing fault, but irritating. The BB414 was well up for the backup, but I'd forgotten how heavy it seems...
  20. Those look really nice!
  21. Greatly looking forward to it, but the surgery on my shoulder was not successful, so it will be a painful return. So and in equal measure. No, the edges it!
  22. Always a Precision man, age and arthritis have led me to the way of the 38mm Jazz nut. Have a slim 2014 American Special Jazz neck on a standard 2003 MIM Precision body. Other bass is a 40-mm width Yamaha.
  23. Welcome!
