1. Christmas 2014, The Rock n Roll Outlaws played their final gig, so we thought. Then The Wharf in Tavistock persuaded us, mid-year, to be the one-off comeback attraction for their first ever NYE show. So, just over a year from our demise, we've all but sold out a 400-seater at a MINIMUM £12 a ticket. That's a nice payday at 70-30 split minus fees. So, while chatting about this to the erstwhile bandleader, he suddenly decides it might be a good idea to reform... Head. Wall. The decision to split cost me 50% of my income for the past year. I could kill him. But I'll probably do it... Grrrrrrr.......
2. To get more than the two paying gigs I played in 2015. About 60 more.
3. Let's face it, the nitro is only marginally more poisonous...
4. Haven't touched the Fender since I got this. And all I can think about is a shiny new 2024... GAS!
5. Although not sure it really counts as jazz, I got roped into playing in a 20s/30s dance band. I knew very little of the music, and all the other players were excellent sight readers. Intimidating. But the sheets had chords on, so I had to apply myself to sorting out the rythym reading. It went well, I wish it had been a longer term project. Might just try and do more in the New Year.
6. Aha, thanks for that. They seem quite light, but still a fair bit stiffer than TIs. But then, well-cooked spaghetti is stiffer than TIs!
7. 'Yer tiz... Given it a tweak to my likings, very pleased. Pickups so hot! Adjusted them down half an inch, which had the unexpected side effect of lessening the dead spot somewhat... Has flats on, silks are purple, not seen them before. Have some Chromes coming, will likely swap them out, but quite nice.
8.
Yamaha BB, £160 off this forum, my go to gigging bass now!
Getting the identical bass later today!
9. Like many of us, I suspect, I always liked the low end. I spent the summer holidays in 1967 mainly at my best friend's house, playing Monopoly and listening to music. We used his dad's hifi, and for the first time, I was able to hear the bass properly. In 1970, I moved to a technical school nearby, and some of the guys had a band. This was the first time I'd ever seen electric instruments in the flesh. The bass player was using a hollow Les Paul shaped Framus Star bass. It was a Will Smith/Independence Day moment - "I just got to get me one of these! Was eventually good friends with that bass player, and even owned that bass for a couple of years. Never stopped since.
10.
two of the five tuners on my Squier VM5 Jazz have fallen off repeatedly and have broke. I'm having to replace them. It is a great bass, aside from that however.
Odd...never had any Squier tuners be other than entirely up to the job.
11. Not so much the strings that cause it. A tighter or looser truss rod affects the stiffness of the neck to some degree, and sometimes has an effect. As does the tightness or otherwise of the neck joint, which was mentioned recently.
12. Will finally arrive THIS Tuesday! Eek!
13. Just got an Octave pedal from Rikki, all very smooth, and well pleased with it! Thanks!
14. Yes, TIs seem to exacerbate this due to their very low tension. I switched to ECB81 Chromes and the need for the truss rod to be tightened a little helps reduce it. Less of a problem on USA Fender necks with reinforcement.
15. S-Q-U-I-E-R.... Dagnabbit, if we're talking about the minutiae of this name, SPELL IT CORRECTLY! Sorry for shouting!
16. I got given my The Alien by Warwick. Kept it a vouple of years, even did one 20s swing gig with it, but I'm one of those "if you have to plug it in, might as well use my Precision" guys!
17.
Badge - Cream
+1
18. I'd go for it. Like almost every other ABG, it's not loud enough without an amp for anything except noodling. Even the hand-built The Alien isn't. And they are certainly fine otherwise.
