Role of the bass player in a one-guitar band?
Telebass replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I tend to play most bass lines note for note, I know a lot of people frown upon doing this, but because we play rock covers, the venues we play are normally full of punters who expect the songs to sound as close to the originals as possible.
Basically, this. I did also use some chords and octave double stops during solos, otherwise kept close to the original. Ish... -
Almost all of them deliver on a Saturday, for a price, but I don't know of any that collect. Collect+ won't take a parcel that large, I don't think...

Welcome!

Wow, second gig this...year! Acoustic trio doing a 30-minute set leading up to the switching on of the Christmas lights in Ivybridge, Devon. Was also our first public outing, and seemed to go down well!

Interesting thread... A or B Again, tweeters irrelevant to my usage.
Personally I think the amount of power lots of people use for pub gigs these day is ludicrous. Back when I was gigging regularly and going to see lots of live local bands in the late 80's/early 90's nobody used anything over 150 watts for bass & I cannot recall anybody ever being too quiet.
Indeed, until I discovered Markbass, I used an Ashdown EB15-150 combo and a Deep 115 cab to get the full 150W. In a 5-piece rock band, I was never short of power. The Markbass rig rarely ever gets above 50%, no matter the venue, in fact our local 400-seater once dropped me out of the 20kW PA to try and sort some bass related problems he was having. He didn't bother putting it back, it wasn't needed. Plenty of space for the low frequencies to do their thing.

What I use is what I want. Beside that, I'd get my hands on a silverface Bassman 50 and 2x15, just to use at home.
valve watts..?? We have gtr guys running 18watts into 2 cabs..?? and they keep up with a powerful punchy band that is loud enough for most places (pubs) with no PA support. Go figure.
It's a frequency thing...A guitar doesn't need that many watts because your hearing is hugely more sensitive to that range of frequencies. To get bass frequencies to the level where you hear them at the same volume requires one thing - POWER!
When was this? I went in October 2008. They don't half pack the punters in - barely enough elbow room to eat your burger. The band were fantastic and Les Paul is a great story teller, but unfortunately arthritis had rendered his guitar playing to a shadow of what it used to be. However he was still a better player than I'll ever be! Oh and they usher you straight out after the show to make way for the next one...
Late 2004, and I never got the opportunity to go back...
Hi Telebass, you say nearly in my shoes, do you mean regarding hand cramps or did you play bass for Cloudbusting?
Almost! One of those decisions that I hummed and hahed about. Still have the music ( ALL of it) somewhere. ..Not having a fretless was one snag! Get the bass to Tom Anfield Guitars in Saltash and have a new bone nut cut from scratch. You'll be amazed at the difference.
There is nothing wrong with the electronics in the bass. The pots work perfectly and are 500k pots as are standard on the Peavey Zephyr C4. Please don't misunderstand me, the bass is not deathly quiet, just lower output than my other Zephyr which I have equipped with Seymour Duncan SSB5's. The SD's have increased the output but altered the tone. I'd like to keep the original pickups in the C4 but boost the output a little.
Fair enough, then I'd be looking at the amp. Plugged into the passive input? If you need it full up, something is, IMHO, definitely amiss...
-
As someone who was nearly in your shoes at one point, I would also recommend the TI JF344 Jazz Flats. But get the nut done as well. It will make the bass nicer to play, whatever strings it has. And I'd really recommend, being ancient, learning to play with a low setup and a light touch, letting the amp do the work.
-
Really, I'm totally surprised. In that situation, I'd be looking at which was duff, the bass or the amp! In the OPs case, as he's certain the bass is that low an output, I'd be spreading its guts on the bench to find out why! Maybe it's got 25K pots instead of 250K...
-
I'm surprised...Any bass I've ever had, plugged into any amp I've ever had, with the input up full, would just be a very loud mess.
-
It's fully up (Fender Rumble 500)
I'd suspect a faulty bass if your input gain needs to be flat out!
Ever single electrical component from the pickup to the speaker will have some effect on the tone.
This. The whole idea behind on board pre-amps, originally, was to drive the cable at a lower impedance, so as to reduce the capacitive loss effect. Tone control was an afterthought. Replace cable with wireless - no need for active bass. Ok, you know I only play passives....

Except that Frankenstein didn't have a slab body. The Ox always said that he thought that the circuitry was somehow different, but it wasn't. The only major difference between standards with maple boards and slabs was that the slabs had cap necks, ie a separate fingerboard. Of course, this fails to explain why owners of the even rarer rosewood board slabs say that they sound the same... As all MIM and USA Standards have cap necks these days, almost any new Precision should get you into that ball park. Not forgetting a fresh set of RS66s...

You're welcome! Wish I still had the 250 to go with my Gibson TR tool...
