1. Welcome, from someone *just* the wrong side of the Tamar...
 2.
I like a straight neck. I then raise the action until it scares the life out of some bassists. (Fretted and Fretless). Also means Bassists don't borrow my Basses very often. if at all.
Obviously in this context, you don't live up to your user name!
 3.
Tried 'em, gave 'em a good go. But in the end, those few extra notes just don't seem worth it to me considering the extra expense, weight and general inconvenience and faff. And yes, I know it's about fretting-hand positions as well, blah blah - but I just plain don't get on with fivers and way prefer four strings. Horses for courses, one man's meat, be a funny old world if we all, yadda yadda.
Precisely me. Tried 3 different times. Eventually had no problems switching, but unless there was some pressing need, I never picked it up. So I eliminated the pressing need by eliminating the 5er. Additionally, every 5er I've played for any length of time has hurt my rather small hands. So in fact, I not only just play 4 bangers, I play skinny-necked 4 bangers. There's absolutely no doubt, however, about the use and utility of a 5er. They're just not for me.
 4.
I don't really like talking to people I know, so there is absolutely no chance of me walking up to a stranger and engaging them in conversation.. Just thinking about it is making me feel uneasy...
Unfortunately, this... Although the avatar shows I can occasionally overcome this problem!
 5. Another vote for the GB-10 http://tascam.com/product/gb-10/ I've used its predecessor, the MP-BT1, for years, and the CD-BT1 MkII CD-based one before that.
 6. So what are the tips and tricks for this kind of gig? For this band, I already know that sight-reading is not needed, but I still need to read chord symbols off the sheets, and this I've done before, so should be OK. I'm advised that it's normally instrument only, backline provided. That worries me a bit...However, I doubt the circumstances are identical on every cruise, so... Grateful for your thoughts!
