1. I used to use an LD Systems MEI 100 basic system. Without decent phones, useless for bass, but would probably be OK for vocals alone. One downside: cheap systems don't have limiters, so hearing damage is possible if you get the levels wrong. If the money is available, go for Shure as a minimum. The Thomanm and G4M systems are probably very similar to the LD models.
2. I'm going to stick my neck out here and say use the electric. Having tried upright briefly earlier this year, I can say that the sound was nice, but just about everything else about the instrument is a pain. The sound is not remotely nice enough that the ease of an electric can be cast aside, IMHO. Monk Montgomery, who loved his upright, never looked back, for the simple reason that he could do the things he wanted to on the Fender. Steve Swallow's changeover was equally sudden and total. Electric for me, and solid electric at that - all else now disposed of!
3.
I respectfully think they should call it a day
Agreed.
4.
I've never been a Who fan but I watched tonight and thought they were great. Obviously they're not going to sound like they did 50 years ago and slagging them off because they're not 20 any more is petty. They are one of the originals and the world will be a sadder and less enjoyable place when these guys and the others of their time stop gigging.
This. Except I'm a fan anyway!
5. Nerve-wracking....first gig in over 6 months. Private party, so not many were actually listening. We pulled it off, but we'd only had 3 hours together as a band beforehand! Glorious old house, almost a small stately home. The completely-returned-to-stock Markbass CMD121H sounded great, deep and round, just how I like it. More, please!
6. Since the demise of The Rock n Roll Outlaws last Christmas, I've played nothing but the odd spot at open mics. There's the Carpenters project on the cooker, but that's taking ages to come together. However, an offshoot of that has gelled as a sort of old farts party band, and first gig is tonight! Slightly nervous. .. Meanwhile, The Wharf in Tavistock has persuaded RRO to play a final gig on their first ever NYE opening. Will actually have to borrow kit for that!
7. My 2004 MIM Precision. In reality, all that is left of the original is the body, bridge, and the pickguard screws. It wears an American Special Jazz neck and a USA 1994 pickup, mounted on a BWB guard. Plays so easily, sounds amazing!
