1. Never had anything but great service from GAK, either on-line or in person. Highly recommended.
2.
http://m.youtube.com/?#/watch?v=t0Wf2SP0rJ4
That is...not that one.
3.
So you've only just begun..?
Now, where have I heard that one before... Must have been someone close to me... Maybe it's you?
4. On USA Telebasses or 51 reissues, you can fit a variety of Fender bridges without mods. Also a Badass 3 if you can find one. These MAY also fit the Squier, but I've not tried it.
5. The trick as always with a jazz bass is to keep the volumes at equal levels. When set equally, the set as a whole is humbucking (or should be if wired right). Either pickup soloed produces the most hum. Additionally check around you for sources of excessive mains noise, fluorescent lighting, anything with a motor in it, old CRT pc monitors, etc.
6. I have Fender bitsa P and a Squier bitsa P. They are both superb and do what I want. I happily gig either one.
7.
Reggae is easy; play less and never go above the fourth fret. What is interesting is that almost all of the above posts reference difficulties with techniques that are practically useless Fopr instance, I don't slap particularly well and double thumbing is weak. The reason for this is primarily that, whilst the techniques in question undoubtedly turn heads, I DON'T LIKE THE MUSIC THAT IS PLAYED USING THEM AND NEVER PLAY THE MUSIC THAT IS PLAYED USING THEM. So, in short, the techniques are of no real use to me. Hence, I do not practice them, hence, I am not very good at them. When I was a fledgling bass player, I learned lots of the required party pieces that use odd techniques (5G by Jeff Berlin, Schooldays by Stanley Clarke, Motherlode by Berlin, Country Music by Stu Hamm etc). I also learned to play Pat Metheny's 'Are You Going With Me' as a two-handed extravaganza. As I moved on, however, I realised that these techniques are pretty much peripheral to the world of music making. I suspect the above list of 'difficulties' reflects that fact that most of the things we have 'difficulties' with are not bass playing but party tricks.
Absolutely this.
8.
I've never seen a Ritter that I didn't think was utterly hideous, and that, I'm afraid, is no exception. Rita for me, no contest. Except, sadly, she's not even half my age, and knowing how much the things go for, I'd reluctantly take the Ritter, flog it,and buy something I do want-like a Shuker JJ Burnel Carbonlite.
This. Sorry Rita!
9. Installed briefly in my Squier P5, but made little difference (to my ears), so no sense in keeping it. Price includes postage. NOW [s]£50[/s] £45!
10.
I kind of like it washed-out sonic blue!
Yup. If it's rosewood, then Sonic Blue it must be. All other colours shall have maple boards. It is written.
11. 2004 MIM P with '94 USA pickup and American Special Jazz neck. TI JF344 Jazz Flats. 2014 Squier VM Fretless Precision, neck replaced with VM77 Jazz neck. SD SBP-2 pickup. ECB-81 Chromes. 2014 Squier VM P5. USA pickup, soon to be returned to stock as it's no improvement. Hipshot HB7 lollipops. ECB81-5 Chromes. Everything I need. Nothing I don't.
12. Most jazz...a great deal of it seems to be musical masturbation - look how much I can do with the rules of music, melody, and harmony. Except a great deal of it is not musical, melodious, or harmonious. Metal. Turgid riffery for its own sake. Rap/hiphop - garbage. Yes, I'm well into the older end of the old fart spectrum. Getting there has taught me to like what I like and, largely, disregard everything else. On the other hand, I'm surprised by a few things I like now - Alison Krauss, for example. As a prog-head in the past, it would not have been on my radar at all. Now, it's almost anything prog-like that is off the radar...and I'm starting a Carpenters tribute!
13. Thought I'd never see one in the UK, but there's a pretty good one on Facebook's UK Bass Market page. Not too pricey either, at 750. No affiliation!
14. Perhaps "multi-scale fretless" describes it more accurately. I would describe it as "ugh".
15. Decided I'd indulge in something much needed - sleep!
