1. Bad year. The Rock n Roll Outlaws are finishing on 20th December. When that was announced early in 2014, the bandleader also stopped accepting gigs, so my band income (which is a fair slice of my total income normally) took an immediate nosedive from which it has yet to recover. However, we were booked up well in advance to some extent, so it worked out that we lost around 30% of gigs compared to normal, ie 42 gigs instead or around 65. Three of those gigs were with other bands. So, I really need to find other musicians around here that want to play for more than the thrill of just being a weekend warrior!
2. And however good they are individually, it's no guarantee that such an ensemble will be musical. I found it decidedly unmusical. But then I don't rate any bass instrument as solo-worthy, so I was never going to like 4 entwined solos, which is more or less what this is. Horses for courses...
3. My oft - repeated mantra: always take two basses to a gig. Ok, one breaks. You STILL need to take two basses to a gig. So you MUST own three. My story, and I'm sticking to it...
4. Contact established with Jim! Many thanks, everyone.
5. Cousin Jake doesn't look like he's suffered from an "incorrect" left hand technique! Nice slappin'! Nice Kay, too!
6. It's a MIJ BB. Unlikely it will be other than pretty good, and BBs are great PJ basses. Frankly, I'd be all over it so long as they're not wanting silly money. If they ask for offers, then start wherever you like, but a ton wouldn't be amiss.
7. As has been said, if you're playing a paid gig, it's entirely right to be properly prepared. Always carry a spare, and have needed it, twice. Actual bass failure - never broken a string.
8. The Rock n Roll Outlaws played their final pub gig tonight at the Courthouse Bar in Lifton, Devon. Ticketed, so reasonable pay, plus we were given a whip-round! Very enjoyable, and a bit sad too. Final gig at the Wharf in Tavistock in two weeks!
9. Thanks, will be going to one of these guys as soon as I've got the setup done. Much appreciated!
10.
The classic poor B manifests itself as a poor flubby D note on the B string ...and poor sustain.... more double bass than electric bass.
Well, my £246 Squier P5 with standard gauge Chromes has a great B by that definition!
11. I am doing a NYE gig with a pop/party band this year, and the fiver is the bass for it. Hard work, learning a (sort of) new instrument, and learning to play Le Freak on it!
12.
That's one Badass comment....!
13. Seriously though, I'm trying very hard to use the amp power and touch the bass very lightly. This is roughly what Leo had in mind, that you put very little effort into plucking. It sounds far more upright-like, particularly with a well run-in set of TI Jazz Flats.
14. My choice? Sonic blue. ...I'll get me coat.
15. I had one of these also. Fabulous Precision. Should never have let it go. Actually found a pic of it the other day...
16. Can anyone recommend a teacher in this area? Doesn't have to be *that* close, anywhere in an hour or so's drive.
17. You could build such a small amp, but not for the same price for bass. For low end, you need a decent output transformer, and they costs.
