1.
really.?
Quite true.
2.
I'm going through this very quandary myself at the moment. Only played a 5 string once, in a shop for about ten minutes and it was oodles of fun - but was it a novelty that would soon wear off? Would I find I barely used the extra string, and it would just get in the way after I'd had my initial fun with it? To be honest, the main consideration is budget - I can't really stretch to a good 5er so I would have to buy an entry level 5er and many people have cautioned against that as it usually means a rather flappety low B. But I had loads of fun playing a 5 :-)
This low B thing - although I've only played entry-level 5s (and a Bongo HH years ago in a shop in Cardiff), I don't believe it affects any bass more than another, scale lengths being equal. String choice must make a huge difference.
3. Great post, very informative! I'm definitely leaning toward a hard case - hard cases only for my electrics, for instance. So the potential downsides probably matter less to me. Of course, this might all change the first time I gig a DB!
4. I'm still fairly new to 5ers, but as everything is Fender/Squier, the disconnect is a little less jarring, string spacing the same, etc.
5. Another vote here for Fagen's Ruby Baby. One of my all-time favourite tracks, and a cracking bass line to boot.
6. Don't be put off by this or that B string. I've found that it's as often your choice of string which affects that, every bit as much as scale length. Your favourite brand might sound crappy - try something different! My favs are TI Jazz Flats, but the B is a flabby 136 gauge monster. Got a Squier P5, couldn't afford the TIs anyway, put Chromes on it. Amazing! Treat it as a completely new instrument and experiment!
7. The G4M's bulk isn't an issue car-wise. Will check out Tom & Will!
8. I'm thinking of the hard foam/canvas like the G4M case, £129. Seems a good compromise?
9. So, those of you who gig DBs, what do you put them in? Bag? Hard case? Nothing? I'm already thinking about getting a better DB, and want to, if I decide to go ahead, get everything sorted in one go - bass, bow, case. I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

11. I went through two Framus Star basses, one solid and one hollow, a Hofner solid, then a couple of Vox P copies. All used. My first new bass was my 75 Precision. Wish I still had it, because it was a) a great bass, and a transition piece in the way of Fender mismatching things.
12. Looks to be MIM, no leads, DC resistance 6.7K, ceramic bar magnet. Includes black screws and springs, as well as having a foam strip. Includes postage.
13. *DB newbie watching with great interest* Oh, note to self - must get a bow!
14.
And there you have it. There's something magic about bass/drums/guitar and in my experience it's always preferable to having rhythm or keys. Especially keys... grr. Enjoy the space. If everyone's creative and on top of their game there's nothing better than a three-piece. Or a three-piece plus vocals.
This.
15. Yup, more than I paid for my bass! Still, probably the ones I'll go for.
16.
It's pretty horrific, isn't it? I just keep telling myself, at least it's not Comic Sans...
That's what I thought when I was featured!
17. Because it makes for easier chording. Then again, classical guitars are essentially flat also.
18. Final private gig for The Rock n Roll Outlaws on Saturday, 30th birthday party in mid Devon. Down to a 3-piece (the way I like it), and a bit empty at first as all the guests were getting drinks, yakking, etc, but got going nicely, and wanting us to carry on all night as usual by the end! Still not sure why the band leader wants to kill this - great fun AND a money spinner. Ah well...
19.
Wow I never thought of that. Hmm I shall look into it.. Where did you get yours from? Looks so natural! Yes the VM P5's are cracking basses. But out of all the things we can get gas for, at least these are realistically attainable. I thought I'd take a punt on this "cheaper" Squier until I could afford a "proper" Fender P5. Really don't see the point in spending all that extra cash now. It feels great (after a good set up and DR Lowriders fitted - killer B string now) and sounds like a good Precision. Job done! Go for it, you know it makes sense!
I've had one now for a few months. Excellent bass, and I too see little point in paying lots more for a Fender which only has Posiflex rods as a major difference. PS Chromes on mine.
20. Consists of keyboard, PSU, driver CD, and a bunch of cables including a separate MIDI/USB interface. Free to collector!
