1.
When I was in a covers band I insisted that we play the songs as closely as possible to the original recordings as I feel that's what the audience expect and what they want to hear, for their money. It was suggested on one or two occasions that I simplify or otherwise change a bass line on one or two songs (essentially to make it easier for the stupid lazy bastards who couldn't be bothered to learn the material properly in the first place) and I always refused, point blank. Anyone who wants to change a song that has a seminal bassline in it played by a world-class bass player in a well-regarded band on an international hit known to millions of people because he or she thinks they know better themselves is nothing more than a pissant in my book and should be lashed until they drop.
Oh yes! This! And this again!
2. S8 used certainly into 1983, example in The Fender Bass: A History.
3. You know the drill...pics or it doesn't exist!
4. Well, I'm more than happy with my £250 Squier VM Precision. Neck swap, new tuners and pickups, say another 75 squids. Sounds great, looks good, weighs 6.9lbs. Job done.
5. If you're concerned about the isolation of IEMs, then maybe they are not for you. However, there are workarounds. Buy something expensive, like ACS T1 Lives, which have their own anti - isolation technology built in, or, much cheaper, put a spare mic at the back of the band facing outward. Personally, I just like the peace and quiet of being isolated!
6. My first Super 15 arrived with a hole through it, so I'm a bit twitchy. Couriers seem to think something this big is eminently chuckable...
7. Get a Squier VM Fretless Precision and do the neck swap. Change the pckup also if you want. Lightest Precision you'll ever own, guaranteed.
8. Great story. Have just repeated something like at tonight's gig. Support band bass man has a 74 Jazz. Showed him the Squier Bitsa P. Gobsmacked!
9. I used to work in a guitar shop, so many times a day!
10. Since I got my Super 15, I've often wondered how much air I could shift with two of them and a V4B...
11. On mine, I left everything stock except the pickup (and the previously mentioned neck!). Installed a Seymour Duncan SPB-2. The electronics work fine - not broke, so I didn't fix it. Hardware wise, bridge is fine, put different tuners on, but probably didn't need to.
12. Keep spare strings and bits and bobs in large Haribo tubs, well washed, with silica gel packs. The local sweet shop puts them out for re-use.
13. Este Haim is the Boss, no question, and a good player also.
14. Damn, I've just noticed there's one on the Kingman also!
