1. Just bought a Squier Jazz neck from Mark and couldn't be happier! Den
2. I have the previous generation Bassman 25 tilt-back, got off ebay for £40 (delivered!). This was also revamped as the Rumble 30 until the current generation appeared. It's a surprisingly capable little thing, and entirely usable in small gig situations. Took it to a jam night, a small one. Was totally at home.
3. Our guitarist turned up at the last gig with a 6W Blackstar 2x10. Bloody loud! Bit of a change from a Marshall half stack...Miked up, job done.
4. I have been able to achieve some success at this, just by constantly doing it over the years. The bass line tends to simplify. Some songs are simply a no-no. Definitely hard work. Lots of homework is the only constructive idea I can come up with. Haven't seen the abovementioned video. If that link is reposted, I'll be giving it some attention!
5. We really don't play loud compared to some. Most of our early gigs were played using a 200W PA. Didn't stop it demolishing what was left of my hearing, plugs or no... Can the punters talk at the back without shouting? No? MUCH too loud.
6. Charity gig on the edge of the moor above Okehampton. Sort of outdoors. As we arrived, there was a tumultuous downpour, which reduced the area to quagmire in a few seconds. Jazzy quartet on when we get there, followed by a young metal band we've played with once or twice before. Then us from 9.30 solid to the end, around 3 hours later! Everyone had a great time. Except everyone was EATEN ALIVE by midges stirred up by the sudden heavy rain. However, someone had bug spray in their pocket, and I hope I got most of it off the neck finish! It's a spotty morning...
7. Well, after a day of practice, I can say that this bass is entirely up to expectations. One odd thing - it has skinny vintage frets. I like them, but the advent of blocks and binding was the marker point for the bigger frets in late '66, so inaccurate on that score. Has also taken a little more weight off the bass.
8.
Thanks folks! Need to explore some of these options. The VM precision a sound like an interesting option, as I love the look of them. Funny because when I think of precision I tend to think 'boat anchor'!
My other P, a Mexican, is around 9lbs. The VM is so light that this now FEELS like a boat anchor, even though it's not! PS:Also had major back surgery over the last 5 years, so know exactly where you're coming from!
9. Also look at the Squier VM Precisions, recent ones. Thety are as light as 7lb, and sound just fine! And they have quite wonderful necks.
10. The black bass was originally a 2003/4 Standard MIM. Has US 1994 pickups, new guard, and that neck originally fitted when the first neck went bad. The sunburst is a Squier VM Fretless, SD SPB-2 and VM77 neck being the only mods.
11. I now have 2 giggers, a backup, and two, soon to be one, acoustic. Feels good!
12. And here she is! As can be seen, I like blocks and binding!
13.
"Mm Bongo, Mm Bongo, They play it in the Congo" Sorry...
I remember that. The first time round!
14.
Tone wise I prefer a Jazz bass, but find a P works better in my band. whatever i play it has my Squier CV Jazz neck or Lakland JO neck on it. Cant get on with medium jumbo frets or P necks these days.
All my Ps have J necks. Would like a Precision with a proper Jazz pickup set, because the J shape is less good looking abd heavier.
15. No, I'm incapable of noodling nicely on a fretless! Left around 1.15.
16. I'm not a fan of active basses. However, I tried out a Bongo 5 HH ( I think...) in a music shop in Cardiff Bay about 10 years ago. I was simply passing time, but the shop guy was keen for me to try it. It was fabulous. Not for me, but a great bass for sure. Only thing I truly didn't like was the painted neck.
17. Well, couldn't run to the TIs, so chose my next favourite for flats without too much tension - a set of EB Group IV 40-60-75-95s. After some fettling (more to do yet), it's playing well and sounding as only such a pickup/string combo can - massive!
18. I was given one of these - my knowledge of MIDI means I've never so much as got a squeak out of it. But they're nice bits of kit and I'm surprised you still have it! (PS MIDI Heeeeellllllppppppp!)
19. I've used one of these forever. Never had the slightest hint of a problem with it. Probably one of my more sensible purchases. Buy with confidence!
20. But they're not Fenders. And although I've shed my need to see Fender on my headstock, I'll probably never play anything else. Because they are the only type of bass I enjoy playing! Nobody ever said any of this was in any way based on logic or good sense, after all!
21. Went in yesterday, bought some strings. Automatic extra discount as previous customer. Good stuff to play with, great service from Tom and staff. Even though I live in West Devon, I actually rarely spend any bass related cash anywhere else! Best Bass Store!
