On the other hand, he also said the body made no difference. What's left? The cap neck. However, the later batch with rosewood boards were also supposed to sound different, and apart from the body, they were bog-standard Precisions.

I have one of each. I gig the Squier.

P - 1.5" - Blocks/Binding - Sonic Blue. P - 1.5" - Blocks/Binding - Candy Apple Red Would have preferred Olympic White as an option... MUST HAVE tort guards. The downside for me would be the matching headstocks. To me, they rarely look anything but cheap. I wanna see that wood!

The VM77 neck profile is very slim, close to an American Special Jazz. Me likey!

Agreed, the G, and the D if not too long, go on untrimmed. Edit: I find it helps to use the type of string winder that fits into an electric screwdriver!

I have the previous generation Bassman 25 tilt-back, got off ebay for £40 (delivered!). This was also revamped as the Rumble 30 until the current generation appeared. It's a surprisingly capable little thing, and entirely usable in small gig situations. Took it to a jam night, a small one. Was totally at home.

Our guitarist turned up at the last gig with a 6W Blackstar 2x10. Bloody loud! Bit of a change from a Marshall half stack...Miked up, job done.

I have been able to achieve some success at this, just by constantly doing it over the years. The bass line tends to simplify. Some songs are simply a no-no. Definitely hard work. Lots of homework is the only constructive idea I can come up with. Haven't seen the abovementioned video. If that link is reposted, I'll be giving it some attention!

We really don't play loud compared to some. Most of our early gigs were played using a 200W PA. Didn't stop it demolishing what was left of my hearing, plugs or no... Can the punters talk at the back without shouting? No? MUCH too loud.

And it gigged beautifully.

Charity gig on the edge of the moor above Okehampton. Sort of outdoors. As we arrived, there was a tumultuous downpour, which reduced the area to quagmire in a few seconds. Jazzy quartet on when we get there, followed by a young metal band we've played with once or twice before. Then us from 9.30 solid to the end, around 3 hours later! Everyone had a great time. Except everyone was EATEN ALIVE by midges stirred up by the sudden heavy rain. However, someone had bug spray in their pocket, and I hope I got most of it off the neck finish! It's a spotty morning...

Well, after a day of practice, I can say that this bass is entirely up to expectations. One odd thing - it has skinny vintage frets. I like them, but the advent of blocks and binding was the marker point for the bigger frets in late '66, so inaccurate on that score. Has also taken a little more weight off the bass.

Also look at the Squier VM Precisions, recent ones. Thety are as light as 7lb, and sound just fine! And they have quite wonderful necks.

The black bass was originally a 2003/4 Standard MIM. Has US 1994 pickups, new guard, and that neck originally fitted when the first neck went bad. The sunburst is a Squier VM Fretless, SD SPB-2 and VM77 neck being the only mods.

I now have 2 giggers, a backup, and two, soon to be one, acoustic. Feels good!
