1. Out as a 5-piece tonight, can't wait! If you like some boppin' bluesy goodness, this is it!
2. If that's the type of Squier body I think it is, then that's also a very light bass!
3. I have been learning loads of old 20s and 30s jazz standards on a bass tuned DGCF which makes it slightly easier when playing with Bb instruments. Today I do it all again in standard tuning!
4. I also think it was the maple cap beck that made the difference. What led me there was the sound made by current USA and Mexican Standard maple board P basses, which seemed snappier to me. All have 2-piece maple necks.
5. Young whippersnapper! Good tip re the gloves, though, will look into that!
6.
I've never understood this claimed distinction between playing covers and playing originals. I just like music.
Snap.
7. A lighter bass may also help. I've gone from 9lb to 7lb. Doesn't sound a lot, but the difference in comfort is very marked.
8. Can't believe this hasn't sold! I'd pull the trigger instantly if the cash were available!
9. What did you go with in the end? I ask, because I'm doing some vintage jazz stuff, and to make it easier to play, we tune down to DGCF to match the horns in Bb. I'm using a Fender Kingman electro-acoustic and, I decided that 55-105 9050s might work. They do, brilliantly.
10. Trying to learn Twisted as a vocal/bass solo a la Liz Frencham. Fun!
11.
Reading this thread I agree with Flyfisher. Most on this thread seem to be saying "if you don't gig, then why play bass at all?" At 54 I'm a gigging virgin. I've never done it. I've not been playing that long. I came to it late. My full-time job is too demanding to give me time to commit to being in a band, so for the foreseeable it's going to have to stay that way. I've got 5 basses. They all sound different and I enjoy playing, but sometimes I do get demoralised. I think if you CAN'T gig it takes more determination to keep going.
That's an entirely fair position. I do hope you'll have the option to gig sometime, though.
12.
Some may find this a surprise but I know there'll come a time when I stop gigging - and I mean well before I get physically incapable. I've been gigging now for 35 years. That's thousands of gigs. I definitely don't enjoy it as much as I did. One of these days , probably sooner than later , I'll stop and move on to the next thing. Life's too big to do anything forever in my opinion. I often think I'd like to try acting in some form. Venues changing or vanishing and audience indifference don't concern me at all - I've never paid punters much respect and have always considered landlords and small time promoters a bunch of clueless tossers. I've always done it soley for my own enjoyment and the joy of playing with my peers. So when I stop it'll be for me alone , not because I feel driven to by others. I certainly don't feel too old. just the opposite. I feel young enough to say ' that was good...now , what's next? '
Great post.
13. Currently has a set of cut down 34" Ti Jazz Flats on it. Sounds great! Will get a set of JF342s when I can afford it. Can't say when theses wear out - they probably never will!
14. Apologies, missed this. Still available!
15. Flyfisher, all I said is what works for me. How you read into that a downer on people who don't gig, I'm not sure. Rhys P, I have sympathy for some of what you say also. The point being that there's a good and bad side to gigging, no question.
16.
Sounds like you need a precision with a slim/jazz profile neck
Precisely what I use. Bloody marvellous.
