1. Another visit to Wunjo today, and although bought nothing more than an expensive pack of strings, once again it was a pleasure to be there.
2. My first Precision was a rare transition piece. Was a 75, with black guard, E-side thumbrest, 76-style sans serif decal with no serial number under it. Number on neckplate.
3. Bit late getting to this page. The "infamous Fender neck hump" should not happen on any Fender bass with Posiflex rods. If it really did have such a fault, then it's a warranty job. And it may return if the neck support is not doing its job properly.
4. Apologies, I missed this. I'm really after a MIM for MIM swap if at all possible.
5.
Funny, because a vast number of established (let's go one further, even; professional) bass players manage just fine with Fenders. If their stock (which, by the way, seems to extend much further than just Fender) happens not to encompass the stuff you want (emphasis on want, rather than need) then that's absolutely fine, but the notion that an army of five-figure-sum coffee-table boutique basses (look, I can hyperbolise too) is a prerequisite of suitably catering to "established" bass players is entirely absurd.
Nicely said.
6.
This is true. I'm one of them. Because I don't 'do' bass solos... why? As I've said on this forum about a billion times, I really don't think electric bass guitar lends itself to being a solo instrument. But then I don't much like solos on any instrument. A guitar solo? Yes OK, but only if it's very simple and doesn't last much more than eight bars. I suppose it's because as a tender young lad I was brought up on 'progressive rock' and have heard enough solos of every type (particularly drum solos) to last the rest of my life, thanks. I find them boring. To me it's the ultimate in self-obsessed Narcissism. In my opinion live solos are pretty much just tolerated at best and are received by long-suffering audiences with patient half-hearted applause - if you're lucky. Stop it at once!
Bang on! And I'll say it again (although I haven't said it for some time): It's not a guitar. It's a bass. And solos rarely sound good on ANY low register instrument. Why? Because solos broadly sound better on instruments in a similar frequency spectrum to the human voice, or in that part of the instrument's range. Simples. As above, stop it. Please.
7.
There are a zillion types of music that fall under the grouping'Jazz'. Wes Montgomery playing guitar, Ornette Colman playing free jazz, Bill Evans' piano trios, big band jazz like Duke Ellington, bebop like Charlie Parker, the 60s experimentation of Miles Davis and so on. I am non-plussed by some of it, love some of it (eg Bill Evans), hate lots of it (free jazz etc) but its a hell of a broad grouping. Do you really hate all of it?
I'm not a great lover of most jazz, but Clarky nails it again!
8. Same. Getting down to 2 Ps, one standard and one PJ. Combo for smaller gigs, head and cab for larger. Same amp in each rig. Tu2. OC3 instead of a 5-string for one song. Good cables, a good mic stand, and an SM58. Job done.
9. Mine would simply be a very light Fender CS Precision with a slim, graphite-reinforced Jazz neck, black and all maple. Easy. Even easier if they gave the neck choice as a matter of course.
10. Ah, I see, Mr Zed! Agreed! Played first gig using the new neck. Amazing! It's a keeper.
11. No worries, NGH! Difference between AmStd and AmSp: No through-body stringing. Satin finished neck with cheaper tuners, although it is the same graphite supported neck. Cheaper pickups. The neck profile is also slightly flatter front to back. No fancy case.
12. Much appreciated, but after all maple! May just move the Jazz on as is, if I can find someone interested.
13. Alien acosutic? Straight swap? And I will be coming to Manchester in the near future!
14. Wowsers! As someone also having had more than my fair share of spime problems, and now trying to regain the full use of my left eye after bungled surgery, I can truly empathise with the poor guy. Hope he actually didn't have both cataracts done at once - what you describe is the very reason they shound never do both together.
15.
I'm seeing a black-body theme developing here. Had you considered trying Fiesta Red?
Oh yes! It just hasn't happened yet...
16. Just looking at the photo...If I put the blocks neck on the Jazz, it'll be a quite passable Geddy!
17. The PJ started life as a Squier Affinity! The only Squier bits left are the Body and pickguard.
18.
OMG you have the same carpet as me......I hate it.
Me too! The horrors of renting...
