1. And why CBS' introduction of a fretless Precision was a great indication of how little they understood their own product.
2. Do anything rig for me is a Markbass LMIII and a Barefaced Super 15. Whole rig weighs in at 55 and a bit pounds. Ok, the 2x15 is bulky. But it sounds so good!
3.
I quite like the option of adding in the J pickup to give a bit of bite. Agree with Muzz, adding a J to a Precision doesn`t make the P pickup suddenly unplayable, it just adds an extra amount of versatility if required.
Precisely why I got a Squier PJ and upgraded it. Best bass I have for rock, and gives a bit more bite to flats.
4. Another vote for Sennheisers! I've used a pair of HD212 Pros for years. Also got a pair of HD202s yesterday (in Sainsburys of all places). Light weight, sound good, cables replaceable. And not too pricey.
5.
Roto trubass on acoustic bass same set from new, that was in 1980 or thereabouts. I am serious, and they are still ok. TI flats on what was main bass, 7 yrs plus. Ti flats on current main player 3+ years. What is this string changing thing?
My thoughts exactly. And I've not broken a bass string ever, in 40+ years!
6.
Mr Frettbuzz, The absolute best, THOMASTIC INFELD made I think in Austria. I was faced with the same dillema but since I found these I wouldn't use anything else. The downside is they are expensive, I think I paid about £40 for the set about a year ago.
+1. Used on Precisions (JF344), Mustang (JF324), and Alien (trimmed 344s, will restring with 324s eventually).
7. I use a Tascam bass trainer. My amps are never turned on at home, except occasionally the Bassman 25, and then only at very low level.
8. Yup, seeing this already, and my old Markbass combo has the same handle and the same problem. Will be interested to see the new solution!
9. For years now, I've used a set of Yamaha YST-MS20 2.1 multimedia speakers for whatever tv we've had. They're getting a bit tatty now, but sound fabulous. Crystal highs without the harsh, deep bass for days, and not too big. The end credits to Bones are going to test the low end of any speakers. If they/it can do that well, they're probably decent speakers!
10. The whole idea that vintage is somehow better is pure myth. Sticking with Fender because I know it best, we hear about the amount of handcrafting there was. This was mainly because there were no machines to do it better/faster then. Had such been available, Leo would have used them. To some extent, the nice thing about Fenders these days is the amount of handcrafting STILL being carried out. Sure, wood dries with time, and this may affect tone. But only MAY affect it. And not necessarily in a positive way. The reason a pristine bass or guitar from the 60s is pristine is that it may well have been an utter dog!
11. No matter the brand, the new vs vintage debate is just that. A debate. There's no big deal, and there never was. Your MIM precision will be vintage in 25 years. It will still be a MIM precision.
12.
When I play something that sounds better I'll let everyone on the board know
Double likewise.
13.
You have seen the light. What you now need, of course, is to spend your notes on a top quality PJ, which gives you the absolute best of both P and J worlds.
Or build one yourself!
14.
Your'e catching me up Clarky, only another ten years to go! All the best
This. Happy birthday!
15. 50th birthday party in Launceston. Ridiculously hot! Most if the punters in the car park all evening, and probably a good thing too! If they'd all been inside, we'd have fried!
16. Unlike my gig tonight, which was fun, but bleddy ot.
17. The Ship Inn, Looe, Cornwall. An absolute blast!

19.
Well, if my wrist Op has been a success and I can play again, I'm having a PJ. They look really good and easy to upgrade.
Already done. My only quibble is that the tuner holes are a bit north of where they should be, other than that, the neck is pretty good. Although I've replaced it...
20. I'll add to that the fact that reissues and vintage are also a waste of time in my book. I just buy something current, say a MIM or MIA Fender, mod it if required, then gig it. I love basses, but they are also tools to be used.
21.
Do it the authentic way. Buy a nice new bass and then gig it for 40 years. To me that is the only way to relic a bass.
This.
