    I've pondered it and drawn up plans for some, even sourced the vulcanised fibreboard for the bobbins (search for knife making supplies, it's often used as decoration in the handles and can be bought in sheets of different colours ahnd thicknesses) but never bit the bullet. I think it'd be a fun experiment if nothing less, you could probably adapt a drill to wind the wire and there are plenty of resources on the net for making a reed switch/counter from old calculators.

    Just bought FlatEric's PB70 Precision. Took a while to come to fruition but great comms throughout and delivery was swift, well packaged etc. Having bought various bits and bobs from BCers in the past this was my first 'big' purchase and it was a great experience.     It's been a while but I'm bumping this back to the top. Just bought something new and the proceeds from a sale would make a nice contribution to the cost! Price still stands at 150 for the sake of the forum rules but I'll consider any offers if someone is willing to get this out of my way, since it's really getting under my feet and the collection is big enough now. So - info since the last time - it's still missing that G string and it needs a new nut now since a chunk broke off when I took the E string off to test a flatwound on another bass. This bass really does seem to hate me, so I just want to get shut of it! I ended up going through a period of wanting to keep this and mod it - using firebird style mini humbuckers with rails to solve the spacing issue - but that didn't happen. I bought and fitted a chunky bridge which has corrected the spacing problem to some extent but has raised the action a bit. Due to the design of the bridge, the new holes were drilled underneath so it'd be possible to put the original back on without being able to tell. A Schaller roller bridge with adjustable saddles would sort this one right out, I'm confident. One came up on here a while back and I should have got it but back then I just didn't have the funds! As before - hardly been out of the case, no damage or marks (apart from a slight crack in the lacquer where the neck and body join that has always been there, not really visible as it's at the back) and looks practically new. Neck is like glass and the profile is quite chunky, more Precision than Jazz. Still has the inspection sticker on the headstock! Case is included and an old 80s jazz bridge pickup that I've never used, may or may not work, never tested it. If anyone wants more info etc, drop me a line Lee

    Just what I was thinking.... I very rarely look on ebay anymore for things like this and would much rather buy things from the community here. That way I know that I won't be lumped with a lemon. I get more curious about the history of things like this, where it came from, and such... I should probably get the MIJ P sorted before I start thinking about projects again

    Just flicking through an old search I had open and this has been listed... black P bass body from the 80s. I've got a maple neck sat here doing nothing from a project that has no real hope of going anywhere and even though I've got my heart set on a sunburst MIJ P (which I shall be acquiring very very shortly if all goes well) I still love the look of black/black/maple and wouldn't mind throwing together a knockabout project that can be worn and beaten without worry, plus it can act as a bit of a platform for upgrades and just generally having a bit of a project on the go. Any idea if this would be worth it... he says he doesn't know the wood (but says its quite heavy) and doesn't know the make. Can't tell if the bridge is wonky or if it's just the photo. The scratchplate looks like it doesn't follow the body contour on the near edge perfectly (near the bottom where the back is) but I'd get a black one anyway (assuming I could find one that fits!) Only distinguishing feature seems to be the bridge - with it's two additional screws that are slightly in from the corners - seen these on a few 80s Japanese copies but don't know - anybody have any idea what this is, or if it'd be worth getting?     Don't know if it helps but I usually fan the wire then sandwich it in some tinfoil so there's a bit more thickness and surface area

    I always found this a funny one - I tried (unsuccessfully I might add) to learn guitar first, a few years ago, and I just never really got on with it. Naturally I preferred to play with my fingers and I just couldn't use a pick for the life of me. Having a 'gap' between what I could feel really threw me... so when I decided to give bass a go a few years later naturally i played with my fingers first. I'd always loved the way that a bassist's fingers glided from the higher to the lower strings with such an effortless, butter-smooth motion (That's something I still haven't quite nailed either) And again when it came to a pick, I just couldn't seem to get it, so I avoided using one. I think the first song that I learned that forced me to use a pick was Ace of Spades, and that was the one I always practiced on, and that's what let me nail playing fast with a pick... I think it was a confidence thing more than anything, as is often the case. I think it's down to the song though, what sounds and feels right

    Cheers mate Got another project in mind at the moment. Want to make the body myself this time - nice, simple, one pickup, 51 precision shape. Got the neck and bridge, as well as a pickup - but need to get a body sorted. Got some wood which was kindly given to me by a BC member but I'm saving that for something else. It needs thicknessing and i just don't have the skills/confidence... so since I'm working now and money is not an issue, I'm thinking of getting a good solid piece of swamp ash and having a go with that. Once that one is finished, I'm thinking of having a go at winding a custom pickup for it

    Wow, didn't know this was still around! She's almost a year old and suffered some SERIOUS buckle rash today... been wearing a new belt and the buckle has gouged the finish right off, almost down to the wood. Bit young for a relic!

    I'm not a guitarist but my mate had one of the blonde ones of these a year or two back and I had a quick go - one of the nicest necks I'd ever felt (I believe in official reviews the necks got great praise too) Bargain price!
