1. The transfer is made through the nut, headstock and bridge anchor points regardless of where the note is fretted. If a slot is too tight at the sides it will not allow the 100% downforce needed. Even if it looks right, it isn't right if you are forcing the string in to the slot. It is being gripped by the nut rather than sitting in the slot. Wrap some 240 round the string and work it in. In this case it isn't broke as such but will be broken eventually. Maybe i should change that signature to 'If it aint seated properly, widen the slot slightly'
2. Unless you are a major band looking to shift serious units, I really can't see what the fuss is about. Just dont list the covers on the sleeve if you like to worry about stuff. You wont be going to prison (unless there's something else i dont know about).
3. The idea is to get a flatter input level. Eq usually goes last, to colour. I always put comp/limiter 1st.
4. I'd love to come and have a snoop around. Need to sell some basses first. Do you mind if I use the Warwick brand for a few months? Nice one.
5. compressor goes first dont it? The best thing to do is experiment until you get a desirable effect.
6. You shouldn't have to force it in. You could easily break the corner of the nut off. Go for it yowf.
7. Your sister daughter? that's a very messed up relationship you got there.
8. If the slot is too narrow, the string will not sit right and will affect the resonance.
9. That's wicked mate. Congrats. A little orginality goes a long way in my book. There's too many fenders in this world, and i gotta say, this surely must put the old graboid into perspective.
10. Cool. There are a few of w&t's knocking around the for sale section and everyones a stunner. Bad market, that's all it comes down to.
11. Anthony Stradivari's big secret was supposedly his varnish recipe. They say that the varnish gave his instruments their characteristic tone. He also hand selected local trees to be cut for his instruments (guitars aswell), so there must be something in the wood. I heard he had arthritic knuckles from tapping on tree stems. I personally think that obviously there are many factors and all are of significant importance, most of all skill and experience. A guitar made from one wood does not necessarily make it better than a guitar made from another 'inferior' wood. Every instrument has it's own character and that is a good thing. If you knew exactly what to expect from a bass and we all sounded like Jaco the world would be a very boring place.
12. Ayup. Any relation to the leicester Vickerses?
13. Glueing frets along the whole length is not a great idea as re-frets can destroy the board if too much glue is used. Glue on the ends is normal, it just stops the ends from popping up. I doubt very much that the frets are steel, i may be wrong. The finish may be the thing affecting the sound.
14. meh? wtf!
15.
Good low b must be the key, tone and tension. Must be achievable with readily available strings at sensible prices. Must work with all 3 flavours - flat, round and inbetweenies. I find Rockbass Corvettes are outstandingly good value. Avoid neck dive at all costs please and keep the weight down. What about the 35" or 36" 5er? Must be within the bound of possible to make one body and neck that can deal with 3" scale difference by bridge position. The dots on neck are just cnc program depending on production run. I can live with less than 2 octaves on the longer scale version.
Shiftable bridge with side dots in different colours for different scales.
16. A pick is sometimes necessary for certain styles where dynamics aren't important. Real guitarists dont use picks either you know.
17. Go for it. I would lightly sand first to give it a key. Nitro isn't the hardest material in the world and will easily ding up. The wet sanding is the tricky bit which is why you need a lot of coats to stop you sanding through, very easy if you aint careful. It's a lot of fun though and very therapeautical. Good luck. Your first is usually the best coz you tend to be over cautious.
18. No smoking? wtf? One of the worst signs i ever saw with my eyes.
19. Line 6? wtf? One of the worst amps i ever did hear with my ears.
20.
Same thing happened to me at a gig with my trusty (or has it turned out my not so trusty !) Passive Precision , Jack Socket Failure !! No support band,, No spare bass,,Miles away from home Luckily one of our Roadies spotted the fault and butchered a guitar lead and Soldered the wires on to the Jack socket wires , saved the gig, Never leave home without a spare one now, even to rehearsals
Spare roadie? What a good idea.
21.
I think Justin Meldal-Johnsen played Scott Pilgrim's bass parts so it might be worth searching his subforum on Talkbass, and starting a new thread there if you can't find an answer.
This. It's Beck intit.
22. It will flake off the plastic can but not off your bass. The can lid is probably still covered in silicon from the factory. You can nitro over pretty much anything that isn't oily. As many coats as you can be bothered with. Usually One can, a week to dry, sand, and dump another can on before drying again and wet sand then buff (by hand with t-cut and swirl remover).
23. Try not to melt your face mate! A new Maplins customer i think!
24.
Thank you! Thats a nice bit of spalted beech! I take it thats off the 6 string though?
Yea. Andrew asked for the beech so he got the best bit from that particular board which the 'other' piece also came from. I'll get you another premium piece of beech if that's still what you want. The options are still wide open for you though. I'll be sorting the necks out next, A few weeks and we'll be seeing some nice basses being born.
25. The tension will be a little heavier. Shouldn't be a problem though. You may need to tweak the rod and the nut slots will be a little big but that wouldn't worry me. Maybe a slightly lighter guage than usual would help.
