I'm rapidly coming to the opinion that even though they make cracking basses and for certain sounds are nessesrry but most Fender's are over priced for what they are.
Oh my god! Someone gets it!

You can only really tell if you look at the end of the heel. Quartersawn has the grain running vertically, flatsawn horizontal, rift sawn at an angle. As for dead spots, there's a number of things that can be to blame. Unevenly glued fretboard, space underneath the frets, contact with truss rod are far more likely than the wood itself being the problem. Although when you hold a piece of timber and do the tap test, it will ring like a bell if you hold it at certain points, much like a string does with harmonics. When you're fretting a note you are also holding the wood itself which at most points will deaden the vibrations (resonance). Holding the neck at the 5th fret for example will allow the wood to vibrate, 4th fret, dead.

That's just bad design. The truss nut should be easily accessible by all without the need for special tools. I don't know what to suggest. The idea of opening up the access area a little is probably the only way to go. As long as you stay within the confines of the cover, I dont see any problem. Just try and keep your work tidy. Use a file to knock the edges off. I dare you!
What is the thinking on flame or birdseye for the actual neck I understand that bridseye was considered tainted ( diseased ) wood not so long ago..??? I have had both and I had no issues with them as both were great sounding with looong sustain but what that is ultimately down to, I am not so sure..!!!
Figured maple tends to be less stable and is as a customer of mine put it 'whippy'.
Hey, this is quite interesting, can you explain this a bit more? I was thinking about the difference between flat sawn and quarter sawn wood the other day, a website I was looking at had the option of both- quarter sawn was shown as an 'upgrade' but your vintage fenders/G&L's and copes etc seem to just use flat sawn- and it's rare you see quarter sawn- even when it's a high end bass where it would be affordable. What effect would quarter sawn have? What would it sound like? And then I guess, why do some manufactures/builder use a 3 piece maple neck, I had just presumed that that was for stiffness? Or my warwick which has a neck made of 3 pieces of maple with wenge strips too... Again isn't that for stiffness? Or is it just more what type of sound you want it to make? interested
Laminated necks are made with opposing grains. When you cut a strip from a piece it tends to move and is impossible to straighten. What you do is flip the opposing pieces over to achieve symmetry in the wood tension if that makes sense, which stops the necks from twisting etc. The idea that you can engineer a certain sound from a natural product (wood) is a contentious issue to say the least. No two pieces of timber are ever exactly the same even when they come from the same board. Laminating stiffens, if you're using flat or rift sawn mahogany for example. and stabilizes wood such as flatsawn maple which has a tendency to move over time. As i said before, the best necks are made from high quality quarter sawn mahogany. When i cut up boards for necks, the quartered stuff gets reserved for special occasions and the rest gets laminated with quartered wenge. I avoid maple as a general rule. I guess quartersawn maple would resonate at higher frequencies but dont ask me to do a blind test because i would fail miserably, as would most, if not all people.

Alright youth. Nip in and say hello to my gf and baby boy. They were transferred to Mnsfield neo-natal from Leicester. There was no room at the inn at LRI which is amazing. He's less than a foot long. A good thing though judging by the recent news story regarding baby death at LRI. The very same thing nearly happened to us both times now. She was told that her pain was not contractions but a urine infection and was left pacing the waiting room. She gave birth 30 minutes later. That was this time. The first time around I had to drag the midwives into the room we had been left in, again 10 minutes later we had a baby girl. The Mansfield hospital is absolutely amazing!
Saw real Fenders in the late 70s with far worse.
I was gonna say (am gonna say). Whoever put this together must have been trained at the fender custom shop.

I like the 'this is rather delicate' bit. A precision? Weren't they originally designed as battering rams?

Looks like it was definately made in Hungary and is not actually a bass, but a really big violin.

Leave your gear overnight? No, never, not ever. Especially while that tramp Cocker is about. -
would anyone buy home built effects? (pictures added!)
lettsguitars replied to LukeFRC's topic in Effects
I'm sure he wouldn't mind . He's a decent enough bloke. I don't recall him ever telling folk to waste guitar money on buying shiny things for each other. -
Another rhcp lp? noooooooooooooooooo

Are you sure you don't need a smaller allen key? Sometimes the nut is inside a housing which makes it look bigger. Do you know if it's a single action rod or dual? A dual action rod wont allow you to remove the nut without breaking everything.

Flatsawn maple is fine for guitar necks. Quarter sawn hard rock maple is considered too stiff. The main thing to look out for in a maple neck is mineral streaks. These are the dark brown, well, streaks that make the wood look ugly. Basically, wood that is free from streaks and has a uniform grain pattern which tightens up towards the headstock is what makes a nice looking and stable neck.
I guess it depends on whether you also play guitar, how much spare time you have to read or watch advertising content, your level of appreciation of/technical expertise in guitar-making, etc. While i'm reasonably fascinated by, and attracted to, any beautiful, well made instrument (stringed or otherwise), I would not use such a strong word as "stupid" for those who have no interest.
You're an idiot (I'm definately joking) -
Best way I've found in these situations, (in a practice at least), is to stop the song and just say "we're slowing down", without pointing the finger at anyone in particular.
This. I would definately treat this kinda common drummer problem whilst in the band situation. Stop the song and address the problem. That's what rehearsals are for. I would definately avoid taking it to a personal level after the fact. 1 to 1's can be very awkward.
RIP Donna. Very sad. 'I Feel Love' was a seminal and very influential track which defined Electronic Dance Music.
Hmm, so it was her fault was it? -
I would also like to add that I do not like the joint Framus/Warwick facebook page. Enough for me to not visit the facebook page anymore. I am a bass player and have no interest in Framus or guitars in general.
For any bass player (bass guitar i may add) to have no interest in guitars which are made by the same company that makes their favourite basses is stupid. -
Factory instruments are susceptible to flaws such as this. A machine churning out 200 necks a day cares not about grain orientation. You're bound to get the odd bad un, which i suspect is the reason behind your problem. There's a lesson here somewhere. Save the money you spend on overpriced clones and get yoursenz a quality original handmade guitar.
I don't think it is incorrect, and you've backed up my point. If someone has a car which is road tax free, they are still using the roads, in fact, they could use the roads more than me and I'll be paying road tax and they won't. Which is why I feel that all cars should have some level of road tax on them. They use the roads no matter how many miles they do. They shouldn't be void because they have lower emissions. As someone said previously, perhaps a revision of the system whereby we band the miles we cover like the vehicle tax bands. For example, drive 2,000 miles a year pay £30 road tax, drive 20,000 miles a year pay £250. It makes sense in the world of car insurance. Just a thought. Dan
Surely the real fact is that we should all be driving electric cars by now. And the bods should be making life hard for petrol users.
