That'd be a good start - another tip is to get a valve amp of low wattage - anything from 5w to 30w for recording. You DO NOT need masses of volume for recording and for this reason, amps have now been created to drive valves at low volumes. You'd be surprised how loud 30watts sound in a home environment. A good mic to use would be an SM57 - there are better mics out there but this would be a relatively cheap option. Placement of the mic can make a lot of difference - distance from the amp too. It really is all about experimenting and seeing what it right for you sound and songs.
yup. the fender champ is pretty good at £100 odd quid.
So i should stick with using guitar rig to record clean than mess around with guitar rig effects later? I think i need to try record the distortion guitar only and try it on the sound system before mixing everything else together. if the guitar sound ok on its own but loss in the final mix, then is a EQ problem i guess. If the guitar sound is bad on its own than is the distortion effect, EQ that i'm using making it bad.
er no. record using a rough guitar rig setup which can be removed later. then when it comes to mixing, send the clean signal out to your boss thingy and back into a new track. this means you get to keep the clean signal for experimenting. the best thing to do is send the signal into an amp which you can mic up and re-record. it's called re-amping and can be done with any instrument. this way you can experiment with different speaker setups, such as overdriven ipod speakers and such, without having to commit yourself to a certain sound/setup straight away. and as below, you can get the performance down and concentrate on sounds later.
First I'm using Guitar Rig 4 for the distortion/overdrive sound. Sine I'm a bass player so i won't have guitar amp stuff to record. Apart from Guitar Rig 4 which is software base effect, I've got a studio rack effect. the rack unit is Boss GX-700 guitar processor which have amp mod, distortion pedal, delay , rev etc. I could line out the rack to my audio interface but I only get 1 take to get the effect right ....... Reason to use Guitar Rig is so i can add effects later. In term of ipod problem, I don't quite get it myself, but you can't hear the distortion guitar when playing on the ipod with ipod headphone, but I can hear it on the pc speaker/or my dads sound system using the same ipod headphone. No compression or effect was apply on the ipod, so I don't get it. This is the first track i making that have distortion guitar. Other track i recording was only clean electric, acoustic guitar, bass, piano and drum.
no mate. record the guitar clean (with plugins) and then add outboard effects later with your fx loop.
"Before Leo Fender, bassists were reduced to playing the double bass", apparently. Where's Bilbo when you need him
the precision was the first fretted bass guitar, wasn't it? hence the name. -
eq! dist guitar-lose averything below 700hz and above 1k. and then add a couple of 2db boosts/spikes in the appropriate places according to your sound. a little panning goes a long way. this aint the 60's. pan reverbs the opposite way. the idea behind eq is to appoint each instrument it's own freq range so they aren't treading on eachothers toes. so if you boost say, the acoustic guitar at 200hz, a little cut in the bass at 200hz will help define the two the instruments.

"Bassists such as Eric Clapton David Gilmour Pino Palladino Steve DiGiorgio and Colin Edwin" how amusing. -
ugh. NO! this aint no amateur dramatics. just dance around in a way that doesn'y affect your playing. the odd fluffed note due to a particularly funky hop is perfectly acceptable. the old saying is look like you're enjoying yourself and the audience will enjoy it too.

i dunno. if you're into metal they're aint much better than a charvel. demz wuz da siht bak in the day. i'd love a charvel strat.

Good place for non-fender pickups
lettsguitars replied to Dave Vader's topic in Repairs and Technical
my mate ben can build the pickups to fit the case if the case is available. email him for a chat. he makes all my pickups and they are absolutely awesome and very reasonable prices. -
I keep finding such good uses for it (Goncalo Alves) !! A much under-rated hardwood imho. there was a ton of the stuff on ebay a while back. is that where you had it from? it got snapped up pretty quick. i got one board, it was so hard on the bandsaw, and sooo heavy! fingerboards look cool. Anyone know of a London-based drummer ....
lettsguitars replied to Clarky's topic in Musicians Wanted
a guy i've played with many times over the years. very very competent, great kit (has used ayotte in the past), very professional and well up for this sort of thing. not london based (leicester) but will happily travel the short distance for payed gigs. i don't have his number to hand. i'm sure you can find him though. strong online presence. google red mock chili peppers or his name warren mee. he works at the guitar centre in ibstock and is a drum tutor. give him a bell. good luck. you can tell him jon letts recommended him. -
Coltrane vs Green Day Miles Davis vs Ellie Goulding Not really comparable because well.. the new artists either use 3 chords or don't write the songs at all. Jazz musicians are known to be the more 'in the know' musicians, noting that any of the jazzers I play with write the best charts and well.. the rest of us don't quite hit the spot.
quite right. i'm the first to admit, though i right/right? write some great songs, they would be far better with a little more musical insight. edit; who needs to spell anyway. i can't even write english nevermind music.
Absolutely not... what I am saying is that I play with sincerity, passion and skill and, mostly, as long as the audience is happy then I am happy. I would never suggest to a jazz, folk, brass band or klezmer musician that I am in any way superior to them but it is un-realistic for the jazz fraternity to suggest that they do not consider themselves to be a cut above the rest of us. Or are you going to suggest otherwise?
i think being a 'musician' by todays standards is not really the same as it was in the time of the appearance of jazz. modern music is less dependant on knowledge of melody and harmony. 3 chords'll do. the folk who carry on the old school methods are always going to be 'superior' musicians.

An example of good service when goods go faulty
lettsguitars replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
I have a Contra II combo that I bought from Beedster (who got it off eBay, so the provenance and age are unknown). It went 'kaput' (technical term) at a rehearsal a month or so ago and stopped making any sound. I contacted the main main at Acoustic Image in North Carolina, Rick, at the suggestion of AI Europe contact Laurence (BC'er Bassadder), who said that - despite me not being the original owner and it being of indeterminate age (and because of the model, almost certainly well out of warranty) it would be fixed for free if I sent the main components of the head to AI. Well three weeks later and a Fedex package arrived with refurbed/repaired components that I have just put back in the head and - bingo - its back in perfect working order. Great service as they really didn't ask too many questions, fixed it for free and mailed it in secure Fedex packaging to the UK for free. Bravo, AI! If only Bravewood applied similar principles
bravo! or is that bravewood oh no. -
as a non reader, i am realising that reading, or at least having a good understanding of the theory of music is absolutely necessary to achieve the upmost level of musicianship. it's the only way you can play a tune (well) with a band without ever hearing it. wasted many years playing by ear. time to hit the books. jazz me up.

as long as it says natural danish oil on the tin. apply liberally, take your time, first on the edges, then the back, then the front, then wipe off. leave to dry and repeat.

just seems to be a long way under the board and i can't imagine an allen key reaching that far. i guess it must be fine. love the bass though, especially the rounded board edges. smooth.
I really can't see why you would think there's a problem in adjusting the truss rod. I would adjust it in the normal way. I suspect Rob Allen supplies truss rod allen keys but I don't see why you would think an ordinary one won't fit. Whether or not 30" scale improves low end might well be a value judgement made differently by different individuals. However, a shorter scale usually means more fundamental note and less overtones.
GHS bass boomers - short/medium scale
lettsguitars replied to Cieran's topic in Accessories and Misc
if your bass is 30" ( from nut to saddle) then get the 30" strings. you could get the longer strings to be sure. the only difference being the length of the outer windings. the only problem you would have is if you bought strings that are too short and would fall short of the nut. if you had string through or a seperate tailpiece then it becomes an issue. -
That's two problems.
one problem and a question. i would actually like to know how you would adjust the rod. anyone know?
-
Not necessarily, I like my envelope filter to have the full dynamic range of my bass' output, then compression comes later. Horses for courses I suppose.
neighmen to that.
-
shouldn't the compressor come first in the chain? after the tuner of course.
