1. not sure. very cool looking bass though.
2.
That's a diminished arpeggio (a series of minor thirds).
i knew that really honest!
3. do you really own 57 bass guitars? have you thought of going into competition?
4. i like the 3rd/6th progression if that's right. not sure what it's called like. but if you're in G, it would be G A# C# E G. i find it fits in at the end of a fill quite nicely. got that from the jaco lessons on youtube.
5.
Haha me too. I had to push back the silks but I "gelled" them back down with a wee spot of Vaseline to make them all tidy again.
top tip of the day!
6. funny you should ask really. i just had to move/redesign a bridge for a customer with the same problem at the nut. he'd tried scraping but it looked quite messy. sorted it though. you might struggle on the e string as it's pretty lumpy. i'd try and find another solution if it was me.
7.
Unfortunately, our band has not been in the studio yet, hoping to soon though! So obviously I don't know how it all works. But surely the band listens to, and then decides on the final mix, how can it be down to the engineer alone to decide your sound? I thought the job of the engineer is to produce the sound that you want. If he does not achieve this first time, then surely they continue until they do at no additional cost. After all, you was happy with the sound you put in, if the engineer has altered it in a detrimental way, then he/she should put it right. I might be way off the mark here, but I am interested to know how it works, as we might be doing some studio work ourselves soon.
you're right. there should not be a 'final' mix without an ok from the whole group. you should have at least one chance at a few changes to the mix before you part with the final payment.
8. it will affect the sound quite dramatically. i wouldn't recommend 'scraping' the silk back. try and find a thick washer to push the ball ends back a bit. unfortunately, some strings are not always suitable for certain basses.
9.
I've been doing this sort of stuff at my Dad's workshop: Custom steel scratchplates. Also the custom control plate from brass on DaveMauddib's Jaguar. Simple one offs are doable, but stuff like scratchplates with inside curves and suchlike need to be done in batches to be worthwhile.
hey man. do you make tuners? i'd love some ally open gears with me logo on. brass bridges too, w' adjustable spacing.
10. it could be a case of freeing up eq space for the rest of the band. if there is a lot going on in the band, 2 guitars, keyboards, percussion, it is necessary to cut high freq from the bass to allow the upfront stuff to cut through. otherwise the overall mix will suffer.
11. flats are more expensive. nuff said. there in it for the money mate, not to make you happy.
12. maybe the guy thought all that expensive gear was gonna mix itself.
13.
If you're ever in the area I'll let you play my Peavey. Much better than most boutiques I've owned.
yea, a sweeping statement from me. i have a thing about mass produced musical instruments. i don't see why people put up with crap that seems to be widely accepted as being normal and 'to be expected'. it's not hard to get these things right, so why should you accept anything less. unless of course, you don't know what you're looking at, which is the main reason for the thread, just to try and get more people to be aware of what's going on out there.
14.
Open up a photobucket account (if you don't already have one) they auto size the pics and also lets you post pics instead of attachments.
good idea. cheers. not now though, i need hair o' the dog!
