to compare the '75 (year before i was born) findin my way with the '91 version is incredible. sounds soo much better in the 70's, and i dont mean the playing, but the actual sound. where did we go wrong? too many effects and 'better' equipment now i guess. funny how improvements in audio technology just make things crapper. although lee looks hardly any different.

cool video. golden era of rock. if i played like that i'd have to stick one duff note in there, just to bring balance back to the universe.

you can usually feel a twisted string 'rolling' under your right hand fingertips (right handed player). can't imagine a slight twist causing any major problems. especially not on the same two strings, every time with that many sets. could be wrong, i'll have to research that one. interesting thread. i would instinctively say any phasing issues were a pickup problem.
If you've got access to a Dremmel type tool, use one of those with a small cutting disc to cut a flathead slot in the screw. That or use it to cut the strap button off leaving the screw to be removed with mole grips.

Yep, you're absolutely right. Following the suggestions from everyone I took a Dremel to the strap button and, eventually, cut that off the screw. This took quite a while because I couldn't cut along the axis of the screw without cutting the wood, so I had to slide in at an angle. Once the button was off, the mole-grips were on, and it came out without any hassle at all. Thanks so much to everyone on here - I was getting real stressed about this, and you guys sorted me out in a matter of moments. Now I can go and play with the thing instead of just worrying about it! P.S. Talking to my wife about mole-grips, she mulled over the name: "Hmm, yes, moles do have a good grip. I remember when the cat brought in a mole, and somehow the mole got loose and then bit my mum's finger. She naturally pulled her finger away, but found that the mole was still attached - now dangling in mid air. How I laughed."
brilliant. i wish i could have seen that.
Same here. A 34" scale doesn't equal a floppy B, there are plenty of basses around in that scale with a great sounding B - although the 35" scale is generally accepted as a method of maximising the clarity of the B. Anyway, don't get caught up in pickups. True, less winding does bring out more of the tops and more winding will give greater output... however that will be at the expense of both bass and tops and gives a more humped mid range response, not a "flat" response. Don't think stronger magnet is better either!
i wasn't talking about stronger mags. just the fact that, if your using pole pieces each string is liable to maintain more of its own characteristics. whereas bar mags will give a more even output over all the strings.
Was just a little confused by this,
an upright bass has a string length of 40" bass guitars are short scale basses. 34" is SHORT. a .130 b is always gonna sound full at any length, and imho is floppy on a 34" with 38" from nut to tailpiece (34" nut to saddles). if you want those higher registers to have as full a sound as your b, you need a longer scale. so i believe anyroad.

have you thought about kent armstrongs? i could rattle something together in a coupla days with a kent neck pup for you to hear if you like. as i think they're the same size.

i have on my early efforts. never had the things around long enough to gather much of an opinion though. i only use my friends handwound jobbies now like. he can make you some to fit your specs (no harm in a plug). all handmade and scatterwound. coil tapped etc very versatile. we'll have a coupla basses finished in a few days if you would like to hear em, i'm sure i could arrange it. and yes, the 45 is wide enough for a 66 string i reckon.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.
until it's right!
seriously though. a drop b/d/z or whatever tuning, even with fatter strings will have (generally) less tension than a standard set (right?). which will mean a slight increase in back bow. if you have a stiff laminated or maple neck, you should allow 24 hours for it to settle. then check the new relief (up bow), and either add more back bow (clockwise) or relief until you're happy. again dont go mad if your neck doesn't move easily. if the rod feels loose, just take the slack out in your preferred direction. or if it is already tight, quarter turns and 24 hour waits. if you have a nice flexible mahogany neck the movements should be pretty much instant, which is how i like things to be.

130 105 85 65 for a low b setup. a friend of mine makes pickups for me by hand at a very reasonable price (less than most ready mades). not active, but i'm not convinced by the need for active pups myself unless you want a loud bright sound which requires less coil = less vol. for a fuller sound you need more windings on the coil which also gives you more vol anyway. here's his email if you want to chat to someone who knows more about this stuff than I. ben (I.M.P)

the problem lies (i reckon) in the scale length. the longer the string length the higher the tension and fuller the sound. your b is always gonna be full sounding albeit a little flappy on a short scale (34") instrument. but all the lighter strings will always sound like a 34". you also need custom pickups for a custom sound. pups using bar magnets with more windings on the coil with give an overall flatter and fuller response than pole pieces.
I suppose if Les had ever made anything as memorable as the Primus stuff on his own then he wouldn't be so intrinsically linked to the band. Because to me, everything after that has just sounded like Primus offcuts, and other stuff that wasn't considered good enough for a Primus album. But they were a band of their time, so relevant with the whole "generation X" that was big in America at the time, when the Red Hot Chili Peppers were still considered edgy and fresh. A great shame because Les and Herb are talented guys (although Les has an awful voice). Herb did two fusion albums with Michael Manring, the band was called 'Attention Deficit'. He showed some real drum chops there, but the music wasn't particularly memorable if I'm honest.
now you're talkin, rhcp. theres a band who i would agree should have given in long ago. aren't they s**t as f**k? i think keidis actually turned into a girl at some point after blood sugar or one hot minute. went from gods to mortals in a few years. thats skag for ya.
Same here. This time last year i was playing a Lakland DJ5, then i got a Lakland Duck Dunn (my second) but im more taken with my CV P than i have been with a lot of my previous basses. Maybe its the lack of funds tied up in a bit of wood and metal that makes me happy. Have these new Squiers been beaten senseless with the ugly stick, or are they the Ugly stick? The Jag looks makes me think of a butchered Guitar from Woolworths. I just cant get on with them.
your ugly stick squier. thankyou knave. sorry chaps. they just look like every other budget bass to me. black paint to me says "we dont want you to see whats underneath". stradivari would LHAO. I can't appreciate any machine made guitars with paint on. or is it that special 'tonepaint' i have never heard about? ok for learners and that. strive to be different is what i say (who cares what i say?). i guess if it came to a fight, me against a million fender clones. i'd end up looking like a squier myself. or summat. i dunno, each to their own. rant out.
