1. of course music is art. goes without saying. artistic expression = art. art isn't just a visual medium! that would be silly! as for the use of equipment such as stereos mp3 players, well, music existed long before apple and itunes. i guess as originally passed down through generations, you could call it folk art in that sense. but art nonetheless. hence a&r (artist and repertoire). i consider myself an artist, however the jury is out on that one!
2.
Didn't you ever wonder who played the feem chooon to Southpark??
not to mention robot chicken!
3.
Yes, interested. I found with Tru-Oil that it doesnt build thickness very well (for well, read quickly) I was using it to fill in some splintered areas after a defret (rosewood) You can eventually get a nice satin smooth board though
right on. also, you can't add a finish over oil. other than wax or more oil that is.
4. seriously, no biggy. it'll be less than a quid to post such a small piece. call it a late christmas present from your uncle jon.
5. no charge of course. i'm just that kind of guy.
6.
Haha, yeah i love Ghibli! It's a rosewood fretboard, not especially dark but with a reddish tinge.
i can send you a piece of sonokeling rw which should do the trick.
7.
I'd look closely at how the nut is cut. If the string(s) are resting at the back of the nut not the fret side, you will be able to intonate at the octave correctly but the frets below will seem sharp, especially in the lower positions.
a totally valid observation.
8. you're right as far as open and 12th. that should be enough for perfect intonation (although there is no such thing) if you're out in between you've got some serious issues. as someone said, check neck relief. too much relief (up bow) and you're intonation will be sharp. adjust the rod so you have a slight relief and adjust saddles so that from the 12th up is pretty much flat. no way of knowing without seeing the neck.
9. catbus! sound as. mmmaaaaayyyy
10. is the board uniformly black? what colour is it? you can use super glue, by slowly building up layers of glue and dust. or even wood glue (if you dont mind waiting for it to dry before re applying). generally though, super glue fixes most things. if you need a small piece of rosewood or ebony to get some dust from, just pm me your address. you will never hide the holes completely. have you considered re-dotting with black dots?
11.
This is a bit more like it, a bit more like classic Primus. However, the whole silly storytelling aspect of it is very tired.
bejesus. primus were great at the time. but that was then. hurts my head a bit now, and les' too no doubt. he moved on from primus long ago and has more than earned the right to do exactly what he feels like at the time. i don't think les would appreciate being compared to primus quite honestly, although they do still reform regularly (no doubt for a little extra pocket money).
12.
I have this album at my parents house but have barely listened to it... I don't remember this track at all! I'll get it back and give it a few spins, sounds like there's more to it than I gave it credit for! ped
ooh. fantastic album. and can i add for good measure. . . vinyl vinyl and thrice more VINYL. also i highly recommend the of fungi and foe album for pure weird darkness.
13.
Playing along to Celebrity Mastermind at home the other evening, imagine my dismay when they didn't agree with some of my more "robust" answers. Still, I respect their right to stick to their stoopid correct ones.
good stuff!
14. i wouldn't bother frettin an unfretted neck. but a grand for a neck that cost £50 to make is, well, you know what i'm saying. daylight whatever.
15. oh dear. les is a legend, and is still making highly original and experimental music with a great band of musicians. as for the bass, i agree. carl thompson is also a true legend and builds the finest and most beautiful basses in the world. none of that poly painted j bass rubbish that swamps the market. sad to hear two really great human beings being rubbished like that due to personal tastes. check out carls you tube channel (o'connord).
16.
what about the voice of geddy lee ?
how did it get so high? i wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy? good stuff. bought some silver jews as a christmas present. also good stuff.
17.
I don't understand the aversion to the telephone in the modern world. My girlfriend won't even phone the take-away.
it's not phones, but the people at the other end that are the problem. if you need me i'll be in my cave.
18.
This is a really cool thread! I kinda like the fact that he charges like 3 or 4 grand for a bass and still works in a tiny little workshop like that, gives the impression that he spends most of his money on gear and cool woods for making geet class basses! Also, I've often wondered what it's like playing a bass with an epoxy coated fingerboard? I play a lot of fretless and upright, so I've always been intrigued, but never had the opportunity to try one out. (Only time I ever saw a pentabuzz was in Tokyo, and the guy in the shop wasn't too forthcoming with the tryouts like! But then, who can blame him!) Anyway, just intrigued, really interesting stuff cheers for that Kiwi. Dan
yes. i also wonder where the money goes. the guy could use some new trousers. hard times.
19. sworn to secrecy? trade secrets? shame on you both! i can shave off 3lb of weight in a second, heres how. cut the neck off.
20. strung up. all good. quite happy with how the scroll turned out. wait for a pickup from i.m.p (ibstock magnetic pickups), and it'll be stripped, wired, cleaned up and oiled. will have a bone/cocobolo nut when i get some more bones. i messed the spacing up on this ebony nut. lovely feel, wieghs about 6-7 lbs.
21. quarter sawn mahogany is the neck wood of choice for me. i dont like necks to be too stiff. as long as the wood is stable and has a nice straight grainpattern, you're laughing. mahogany offers great flexibility and adjustability. + when i start messing about with all those laminates, theres more chance i'll lose it. and talking about losing it. . . . i lost a massive peice of rosewood from the back of the scroll, d*&n it! tried to rescue the body but lost heart and had to accept that i'd lost a lot of time and more upsetting, a lot of nice timber. these things happen. anyroad, i managed to scrape some bits together and get a new body in order, double quick time. the neck is not set. be it bolt-on. radius tomorrow, bit more sanding, some holes, bridge and strings. and, if things go the way they have been so far, i'll be showing how to remove a truss rod from your eye. new body-mahogany, ziricote, walnut, sycamore. a bit strange really, still cool though.
22. routed and neck nicely fitted. carved the top. some cocobolo tearout on the side. i'm gonna try and work around it rather than glue on new sides. kind of there with the scroll. i need to work at it.
23. obsesssed with bowie from age 8. one summer my cousin came to stay and brought his strat copy and def leppard hysteria tape. that was it! i knew what i had to do. rocket, yea!
24. not sure, but i bet it was deer!
25.
I'd go for the Tokai Pbass......sorry, but any Fender that heavy is (for me) a back/shoulder problem waiting to happen. Unless you can sit down for all your gigs.
100% fenders belong on the front of cars.
