  1. Most of the suggestions I'd have made for custom builders and J specialists have been covered above. My list of favourites mirrors Molan's very closely. Celinders are absolutely staggering - fit, finish and playability is usually out of this world (though some are a bit on the heavy side). The two Sei Js I've had have been extremely refined instruments - lightweight with beautiful necks - a pleasure to hold and very modern tones (though versatile too). Alleva Coppolo are beautiful hand-built Js with a specific vintage aesthetic - as Molan suggests, one of the best pres in the business, especially when coupled with Coppolo pickups (incidentally, the pre is available in a stomp box version). I've no experience with with Sadowsky but they're the choice of some of the world's top players and there's a beautiful example (5 string) for sale on Basschat at the moment. There's also a 70s Alleva Coppolo available on Basschat. Overwater is another good option - Overwaters don't really appear to hold value particularly well (though they're extremely well-built, well-designed and beautiful instruments) - some real bargains can be had. I'd strongly advise a trip to the Gallery in Camden - a great selection of super Js (and basses that are pretty super and pretty close to the J shape). I'd also strongly advise - when you've derived some clear ideas re: the characteristics you're looking for - consideration of a used bass. The two mentioned above are advertised at extremely good prices - you'd have plenty of change from your £3k and wouldn't be likely to lose much (or anything) if you decided to move the bass on at a later date. Enjoy looking and testing - it's all part of the fun. Also, don't assume that a £3k J is better/more super than a £2k or £1k super J. In my experience, there's a bit of magic fairy dust around in super J land - it's a competitive space and any high-end luthier should be able to make a very impressive stab at one of the world's most iconic instruments
  2. Lee650 - thanks, I thought the price was pretty reasonable - they're are an absolutely fantastic bag. Tandro, sorry - work is crazy and I simply don't have time to organise boxes, packing, courier etc. I know it's a pain but I'm really looking for collection on this (and I'm not in a rush to sell)
  3. Absolutely fantastic heads - about 75p per watt of fabulous power and tone - a bargain!
  4. Blacck-eyes - try the Alembic Club - sf2 units tend to sell quickly there (one sold this weekend). There arent too many of these in Europe either
  5. just sold some strings to fatboyslimfast - super-rapid payment and very friendly communications - highly recommended!
  6. For sale, iGiG G515 bass gig bag in black - I've inspected it thoroughly and it's in absolutely fantastic condition (it's hardly seen any use at all) - the only blemish I can find is a slight mark on the small metal badge on the front - it's entirely insignificant and could have been there from new. For some, these are the ultimate, high-end, high-tech gig bag. Certainly a superb unit but it's not getting used. Cash on collection in Manchester (centre) would be good - indeed, I don't really have time to ship - apologies for this. £85 seems about right - these are £155 shipped from BassDirect (see below). 7. A custom-built, full touring-spec flight case for a Gibson Ripper. The case is timber framed and aluminium clad - it is extremely sturdy and protective (built by Bird Brothers - high-end bespoke cases) The case was re-foamed by BSH cases in Manchester around 18 months ago (an extremely high quality job with black, short-fur covered high density foam) and has been unused since. The fit for a Gibson Ripper is perfect - the re-foam involved very careful on-site measurement of all dimensions of my Ripper bass. Whilst the case may also fit a Grabber, please note that it is a dedicated Ripper case and will not fit any other bass shape (without butchering a very beautiful foaming job - the re-foaming work cost £100!) The case has been used (it is a professional, touring unit) but is in excellent, very clean condition. Given the weight, collection from central Manchester is probably a good idea. I may be able to ship - I think I have a carton of sufficient size. I'll take £70 for collection on this - I hope that's fair, even a bit of a bargain for an extremely difficult to source case (getting really high quality cases for Rippers is not easy!) If anybody wants shipping, I'll try to get a quote but I think £25 would be about as cheap as I could get. Any questions, please just ask
  8. Bump for downward price adjustment and new images
  9. I just took some strings off a bass for a mate - I think they're Rotosound swing bass, medium gauge. They've been used but seem fairly new and are clean. They've been cut to Fender Jazz Bass length. £4.50 including postage to the UK seems about fair - there'll be a donation to Basschat out of this.
  10. Wonderful - what on earth could replace this?
  11. As if by magic... I currently have one Wal, sold another a few months ago, and have played loads over the years. I cuurrently have two SCDs and a small bodied short scale Alembic so have a bit of experience. Thegreek - send me your number by pm and I'll give you a call when convenient (if you wish). In short, massively different basses.
  12. For sale only (no trades thanks), an Overwater Progress III Elite 6 string fretted. I think the bass is around 6 or 7 years old (copper shielding foil on the back of the cavity plate is possibly covering the original sticker?) Excellent condition with some minor playwear - no nasty scratches, dents, dings, dongs etc. but a few minor, very small and shallow impressions in the lacquer. Flame walnut facings, bookmatched to centre on the front. Lovely rosewood (I think) board and heavily flamed maple centre laminate in the 5 piece neck. Usual fantastic Overwater construction and electronics (3 band pre and Overwater pickups). The bass comes with its original Hiscox case in used but but very clean and sound condition. Scale length is 36" - spacing feels like 17-18mm at the bridge (I haven't checked, but comfortable for me). Playability is excellent - action is very low and string compliance is lovely. I'd disassembled the bass for thorough cleaning in the pics, but it's now had a pro set-up (this week) with brand new, light gauge DR Hi Beams. Ergonomics are well thought-through (an Overwater speciality in my experience) and the bass is supremely comfortable - the 36" scale feels like a 34" (and I'm sensitive to this kind of thing!) Times are hard, but in all honesty this is a bargain. I'll take £945 collected in central Manchester (no offers please, the price is firm - this spec. on a new bass from Overwater would be over £3300! - I'll also give a donation to Basschat) Shipping to the UK will be around £20. There's just one minor issue with the bass - I noticed on return from the set-up that there's a slight earth hum. Probably just a poor connection or a wire off somewhere - the bass will go in to the tech. for correction this week. If you're handy with a soldering iron (I'm not) and can sort the earth yourself, I'll knock £20 off (so £925 for collection). Pictures are below (some with strings now!) The flame walnut is not as dramatic as it looks in some of the flash images - it's very lovely but more subtle - the non-flash images give a better impression. Any questions, just ask.
  13. I'd be very tempted to stick with the 359 and maybe push it through an agi 728 - they come up occasionally in the US at decent prices (carrying them is a bigger problem than sourcing). I can't remember if you've had a db750 - hybrid of course but not a bad compromise as a one box solution. After a lot of messing about over the years, my own choice (if I could possibly move it) would be an agi 680 into a 728 with an Alembic sf2 in the loop of the 680. Monstrous.
  14. Bargain - these sound phenomenal and are beautifully built
  15. Received an absolutely beautiful Wal from Littleal this week - a truly stunning bass, everything Al claimed for it and more. The transaction was flawless in every reespect and Al couldn't have been more honest, helpful and friendly. Shipping was super fast, packing was excellent and the bass was exactly as described (as new). Thanks Al, great deal, great guy - a genuine credit to Basschat!
  16. Russ - that is absolutely gorgeous! Martin is a fantastic luthier and an artist. One of my favourite Seis - beautiful
  17. I used to have the Fodera version of this and I have to say, yours looks very close indeed (even the wide fingerboard). The wood working looks to be of a very high quality too. The control layout is different, but overall, an extremely impressive looking bass - good luck. What's your 'sale' price?
  18. Bump! I've got one of these - good fun, easy to use and high quality effects at a give-away price
  19. Absolutely wonderfu job and one of my favourite colours. I can't tell from the images (I can see one or two silver screws) but I'd go for all black screws in the plate - I'm pretty sure that the Capri Orange basses in the International Series came with black screws.
  20. Lovely bass - something different and you really don't see many of these around. I can't recall that I've ever heard one. Good luck with the sale
  21. My old Ripper - heavily hot rodded (in two episodes) in the very early '80s
  22. Most recent shortie and three shorties together
  23. lozbass

    gone

Absolutely gorgeous! Fabulous instruments (but bitter experience taught me that I can't get around the board width on a Fodera). Good luck with this - construction and timbers on these is as good as it gets - up there with Alembic in my opinion.
