She seems nice on her Scott's Bass Lesson video... hate the Jennifer Batten-esque mahican hair many female players feel they have to do...

Basschatters, Any thoughts on the Line 6 Amplifi Fx100 and it's effects chain possibilities (i.e. 3 delays) vs. say the TC Flashback triple? Would be interested in your views... visog
Slightly bizarre when Mr Berlin has spent years telling everyone who'd listen how unnecessary 5-string basses are! Does look nice though, and I am tempted by the 4
I've heard him say this too but he saw fit to bring a fiver on the ABWH tour to cover Tony Levin's parts. (A Pedulla by recollection.) Fact is he says an awful lot and proceeds to bash out a sour chorused toned barrage of seventh chord tones over standards that were popular 50 years ago. I don't doubt his capability, I just think he's stuck in a time warp (at least as a leader - loved his stuff with Bruford, Holdsworth and McLaughlin)

John Entwistle or Chris Squire, who do you prefer and why?
visog replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
Hard to compare as there isn't a level playing field - The Who were very different to Yes. The Who's song-writing dominated by Pete Townsend where as classic Yes was a more varied mix of writers from the band. (Interestingly in later Yes when dominated by Trevor Rabin, Squire adopts a more traditional bass role.) Anyways much as I love JE, he was mainly a pentatonic 4/4 guy (which he absolutely made the most of 'Real Me' anyone?) where as Squire was full major scale/modal part player, probably inspired from his choir-boy roots... And he had a sublime tone. And a gift for melody. And a great voice. And he was a good song-writer.... 'Onward' cover currently featured in soundtrack of Michael Caine's new film 'Youth'. -
I also doubt the "cost a fortune to sign" point... TH spotted them on the Tube whilst mixing one of the later Yes albums... they were just a scouse club act... can't imagine there was much of a bidding war going on over them.

Thanks for the advice all... went for a Ditto X2 in the end. (I realise for the Frippertronics/ambient I'll have to add a couple of delays later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwyiN3wF2_Q) but for the time being, I'm trying to learn the knack of starting and stopping on time! Not as easy as these YouTubers make out but fun trying...

Bass-chatterers, Could I get some recommendations for a good looper? I know these things are very subjective but a few suggestions would be a start. I'd like to be able to add and delete voices on the fly and also get some ambient long sustain sounds happening ah la Frippertronics if possible. Suggestions welcome... visog

So it doesn't appear to have the blend knob to retain and mix your clean signal?
this seems like exactly the sort of thing Fender should be doing.
What? Nerfing one of their crown jewels into an Ibanez Talman?

Well he went out with a good one!

Great artist - always trying something new - some of it worked, some of it didn't. But what a legacy he's left..
I've got a.ot of time for JP. I remember when we all heard 'Got A Match' for the first time and all ran out and bought the Electrik Band LP (pre-CD days). Everyone was trying to play it and everyone was failing!!
I love that album... Scott Henderson who appears on it dis's it terribly saying it was Chick's show band phase where he wanted to reach the masses, but I love all the tunes and JP shines as you say. The extra track that did come on the CD when we finally got round to getting it was a real stinker though! (Naff ballad - not CIty Gates, the other one)

The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
visog replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
There's Janek, Matt Garrison, Hadrien Feraud, and Linley Marthe that instantly spring to my mind. All from the last 10 years or so, and still going.
Agree with all these names - Hadrien is phenomenal and Linley seems to have come from another planet. Sad fact is I suspect these people make little money and most of it coming from endorsements and lessons, not from original music. -
Good advice so far... re. the stress point in the previous point, and I don't think it's been mentioned so far, is the importance of being able to hear yourself clearly. A deficiency in the volume and there is a tendency to over-play to make up the difference... Seek out Gary Willis' advice in this area... he plays at high volume, letting the amp do all the heavy lifting but playing with a super-light touch. He has a great exercise where you play a note, reducing the finger pressure until it 'frets out' or buzzes. Almost always, it's a fraction of the normal pressure a player uses. This can be applied to a line too. Takes a bit of focus but worth doing. All the previous stuff on posture and hydration is super-important too.

Hmmm... it's not that good I'm afraid... Hasn't aged well but by contrast ST has matured nicely... Wry, subtle and clever. Horses for course I guess but the Wogan thing was just embarrassing. I think for me, Ade Edmonson hasn't ever been funny outside of the Young Ones.

Whilst tone is a very personal thing... it is worth experimenting. Today's ultra-clean amps are light-years away from the classic '70s amps in terms of tone, so if you're playing in that genre, you should at least investigate... Personally I find this over-driven tone glorious... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwhMw5lwzNg
I've never tried one (or even seen one) but I remember the bass player in one of Dave Brubeck's bands had one and made it sound very good... if that helps. (Which it probably doesn't.)
Found this which may help... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhLqb1YFlyM
