A Harmonic Algorithm (Research Project - looking for input)
Hi Guys, You might like to watch the video below. All the harmonic combinations possible were comprehensively codified by Slonimsky in his book, which you can find here: http://www.u.arizona...s.Slonimsky.pdf for free. The video below shows you how to make use of just one of these harmonic patterns for a 7b9 scale over a major dominant scale e.g. G7 Fascinating but a life's work of practicing and soloing Happy harmonising ... Can't see the link to the soloing application? -
Oh man.... that is awesome. Glorious!

So the Ken Smith looks like a nice design but @ 1:35 we see a very nice single cut from the exotic and rare (on this side of the pond) Surine basses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Vl_qn5-Qos

Yes - Hadrien who kicks things off is a monster! Played with Chic Corea's Vigil for a while as well as John McLaughlin. But he's the only one I know of... I'd recommend Eric Czar who does some amazing vid but not sure if he plays with anyone of note. visog

So I was in the market for a bass distortion... tried out the range. Marcus set them up and Mark looked over proceedings. Great range to try.. EBS and Darkglass notably. I think Mark is a prickly fish if you go in with a load of old school Fender mojo baloney. He's definitely from the new world of bass which is what are you wanting to do... here's the tools to do it... And there's no better choice in the UK for high end except perhaps the Gallery - close call. All that said, he's never gonna shift that gold sparkle Mayones bass unless Prince comes in the store...

Nine hours for two weeks! Wow I'm surprised. The arrangements weren't as sophisticated as say Mahavishnu. They seemed to me at least looser and more improvisational. Saw the JM Trio with three different bassists: Eckhardt, Di Piazza & Berlin. All good (even Jeff Berlin when he shuts up) - but I got tired of JM on nylon string. Prefer him on steel - electric or acoustic.

Just outstandingly beautiful ..... And bass tone to die for.....
visog replied to Wonky2's topic in General Discussion
The drummer (boxist?) help coax it from a bass noodle to a tune. As does the great arrangements. Nice chord progression... Good spot! Also I'd love a J with an action like that! -
I quite enjoyed the Wal I tried in what would become PMT Manchester. The electrics were all funny and sweepy but sounded good. A bit like when I try Alembics I end up with a god-awful tone. As a point of note, Geddy Lee achieved his worst tone ever during his Wal days. Very flappy. Mick Karn and Percy Jones sounded good on them. So in conclusion, beauty is in the eye... I think you get the same sort of manic fan base for any rarefied bass - Alembic, Status, etc. It's not the sole preserve of Wals.

A Comprehensive Chord Tone System For Mastering The Bass
visog replied to Wan's topic in Theory and Technique
Re. Hector's note. It is hard work and I can't say I've ever finished it really but it's let me come up with lines and an approach for any chord change, based on practical engagement by playing. And it's pattern based which works for me although I understand this is not for everyone. The Berlin/Viola approach in comparison doesn't take into account the movement of a walking line or the extensions etc. It's a much more theoretical approach which gradually results in chromatic overload when you reach the tone/semi-tone above, semi-tone below, then chord tone point. You'll get real lines out of Willis' method. And listening/playing over changes. Beware the typos in the book which may lead to confusion but he used to have a list of correction on his website. -
A Comprehensive Chord Tone System For Mastering The Bass
visog replied to Wan's topic in Theory and Technique
I'll save you the bother - no joke: Buy some manuscript paper and write these formula and you'll have the meat of both books: M7, m7, o7, m/M7 arpeggios with each of the four tones approached from a half step below - i.e. each arpeggio now being a scale of 8 notes - play the approach notes on the weak beats, tones on the stong beats. Now do the same but with two approach notes, diatonic step above each tone, then semitone below. So each arpeggio tone now has two approach notes. Finally, do the same thing with three approach notes: tone and semi tone above, semi tone below then the arpeggio tone. Finally do this in all keys. That's the books. There's about as much description of the application of this concept in the books as I've given here. I'd recommend above both these books, Gary Willis' 'Fingerboad Harmony for Bass' which teaches the same concept but applied to chord changes from the start. You'll be practising a II V chord tone approach with passing notes with the CD within 15mins of opening it! visog -
What an amazing bass solo ... or maybe not

Right so I finally get try one care of Andertons in Guilford. They Set me up in their 'Bass room' with the BTB33 into a nice Markbass combo and left me to it. It's a really cool bass: through-neck, barts, 3-band EQ, mono-rail bridge. However, after playing for a while I realised that I wasn't getting much more than a standard 5. So yes it's up a forth which is OK if that suits your music but other than that, it's the same number of notes as any other 5-string 24-fret give or take (it has a weird s-shaped neck end). Also the 33" scale was pretty much undetectable in comparison with my GB 35" scale. Similar position and string tension. (In contrast, an Alembic SC with 31" scale reduced the strings to floppy butter making everyone Stanley (almost) with sheer effortless of playing.) So my verdict was not to buy, but for someone without a 5, or entering the market for a 5, it's a hell of a bass for the money...

It's the incredible Mick Karn. Quite a line-up! As stated above, a similar line-up did a great job of a great Kate Bush song with Pete Townsend instead of MU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJvXpvH2-Hk This utilises MK's talents much more... RIP Mick.

Welcome to the forum. On a minor point there is a 'bass guitar' specific forum but seems everyone posts everything in general now and the moderators just let it happen. Madness. Anyway, in response to your question. I'm going to go with a gut feel based on its Alembic morphing into a Carl Thompson which says to me an American builder by the name of Ron Blake. Also the banjo peg-head is also redolent of his work. Bit of wild suggestion I know and I've no other basis other than aesthetics. Do you have any indication of its provenance? Could it have been imported from America? Visog
