Jimmy Page: How we wrote Stairway to Heaven
visog replied to John Cellario's topic in General Discussion
'Course he nicked it... well the intro anyway. Here's one of JP's biggest influences... listen to 0:20 and see if you recognise the progresson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWeejHJxGjs -
Thanks all for your sage collective wisdom... My requirements have narrowed down this set: EXL220-5 Nickel Wound 5-String Bass, Super Light, 40-125, Long Scale http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=190 They helpfully confirm:

Fits long scale basses with a string scale length of up to 36 1/4 inches
I think D'addario are calling me a wuss though with the 'extra super-light, almost guitar' designation of the gauge. They'd have a heart-attack if Mark King asked for his 30's!

Actually the good folks at D'addarios have a FAQ which is actually useful. Here's their guidance on used string lengths on basses and their string set scale sizes: http://www.daddario.com/DaddarioFAQ.Page?solutionid=11 For example, a 34" but through-body strung bass needs a longer used length.

Oh wow! Thanks Doddy. I shall buy some new D'addarios when I work out how to say it. And where to get them.. ... and if 'long scale' will fit a 35" scale bass

... no taper, a purple fixing ring for the B, a bronze fixing ring for the E, a red fixing ring for the A, a black for the D and finally, a green for the G? It's not a quiz, it's just that I'm not particularly fastidious about changing my strings and the current set have been on about a year and I forgot what they were... I quite like them so and Ident will help me replace them like for like.
Chris Squire however is a different story. He walked in at my workplace one day, and was being very difficult about autographs. After some to and fro with the other people present, I got more and more frustrated, and finally it burst out of me: "Do NOT disturb while I'm teaching Jon, Bill, Steve and Rick, you bloody autograph hunter!" It seemed to put him into place, but to this day I feel guilty about having been so harsh with him. When you don't treat people kindly, who knows how they will start to treat other people again...
He walked into your workplace? And what where you teaching the rest of Yes?
Think that's Dave La Rue who's worked with Steve Morse in various guises so he's used to backing sh*t hot guitarists, he's an excellent bass player without being unneccessarily showy which fits these type of acts just fine.

Checking photos, that's definitely Dave La Rue. I found another photo of him with the same (or identical) bass and Joe Satriani when Satriani still had hair It's a 10 minute track, so it needs variation, and for the bass to subtly develop throughout. But the balancing act is to support the lead, not detract from it. La Rue, in my humble opinion, nails it.
On the subject of DLR (as opposed to DLT!), just found this neat vid that shows him with a few other MM endorsers raving over some new pick-up selection deely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fJgqoWgGno From 5:00 he's doing some good 'playing under soloing...'

Yngwie clone playing classical-prog cross-over. Destined for a life of trade fairs... Watch him blossom into a endorsement virtuoso... -
+1 for me with DL. Like all the players. Henrik is clearly a good player but, and I say this with respect to what he's doing, he's really just playing the (very) choppy arrangement with some inventive fills. My point is, even if you just played roots to all those 9th chords at the right time, you'd sound good. So I think the band are pivoting off a great singer, and whoever does the arrangements, with oodles of rehearsal. (Actually I think I've just defined what it means to be a bass player in a good band.) I guess their shtick is that they're all young. Well it sure beats the army of boy-bands out there. I'm just jealous! P.s. He (Henrik Linder) has started using a bass with those weird twisty super-intonated frets: http://matome.naver....471424792821003

I wondered what the hell was going on until 2:00 on the bass vid then I 'got it'. Not for me but some young bass turk could get a lot of mileage out of this for some bass/dubstep cross-over.

I like the idea of a pro-UK builder but the current stock doesn't reflect this yet. More Shukers,Overwaters, Enfields, Wals, Statii and GBs! -
Had another quick look on t'Net: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Ibanez-G106-Grooveline-6-String-Bass-Guitar-Natural/T8N?origin=product-ads&gclid=CLqXk_SQh8ECFSrpwgod-HoAvQ Yours for £1,930!

They're supposed to be very comfortable but when I last looked they were eye-wateringly expensive... ($2.5k but I couldn't find a UK price)

You wait ages for one then two show up at once: One about Stanley: https://www.youtube....h?v=_r5EdmTnItw And Robert Trujillo's about Jaco: https://www.youtube....h?v=nI0znixksZs They both look talking-head heavy but we may get some rare old footage to ogle...
Just ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item5d5009789b At this price it's worth the gamble.
He is waiting for pics I believe.
From us GB owners or for his new-builds?

Specifically for dirty'ing up/giving a valve-oomph to a very clean bass/amp combination.. Thoughts and recommendations please...
I think Rush are a great band and thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Being together for 40 years is quite something. I just don't like their music though :/
What you describe is actually more commonly known as not liking the band in question. I'll throw my hand in for 'Moving Pictures' Great tunes, lots of space in the arrangements, subtle (for Rush) use of synths and awesome bass tones and lines abound.
-
Mmm that's just begging for some punchy 16th note Jaco lines...

The score recognition games in this are gimmicks and artificial. For a genuine, phased play along approach check out Sight Reading Machine. Few quid on Apple iStore. Here a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBreIMKFA5I

Why doesn't Bernie ever update his website to show off these latest builds and designs!?
