The bass cellar - denmark street
lowhand_mike replied to budget bassist's topic in General Discussion
well i haven't managed to get out of the office yet today, i fact doesn't look like i will till i go home and they'll be shut then, maybe tomorrow. i would like to hear their side of it. i'm sure it will be along the lines of "we have hundreds of satisfied customers...." etc blah blah blah -
Genres - Albums that defined them (?)
lowhand_mike replied to fusionbassist1's topic in General Discussion
metal, hmm, black sabbath (not sure on album) Metallica 'Master of puppets', Faith no more 'The Real Thing' mainly cos their style spawned so many of the nu metal we have now and by those three you cover a broad spectrum, things is you could easily break metal down into several genres as could you with rock, oh i forgot guns and roses, they could easily spill across both of your 'rock genres' being both heavy (not necesserily metal) and light -
i think it was about a '92 MM stingray 2 band, natural with maple fret and neck, really nice, had the old style bridge with mutes. loved that bass but had to sell it and my practice amp and only got £300 for both, in a word....gutted

i remember reading that about the bass cellar, ant think of a time when all the staff has been like that, simone maybe but the rest forget about it. need to pop down to demark street today at some point so i might just drop in there with this web address and post and tell them to have a good read. might be enlightening for them. most of the people who buy from there are either endorsed so dont really have to pay for it, or work in town with wads of cash that know no better, or young kids who have saved hard then get ripped off by them cos they have heard of the legend of denmark street, i know thats how i looked at it the first couple of times i went there.(thats a long time agao though when there were more shops.) -
The bass cellar - denmark street

annoying thing is that if you go across the road to the other shop (can't remember the name right now) they are much more approachable and friendly yet they are part of the same company (music ground i think) which is where i tend to head instead of the bass cellar. -
the SR 500 has the bartolini MK1 pickups and pre amp, its active though i'm not sure if its just the pre thats active(it's a 9v system). looking at the frequency curves the K5 has very limited mid adjustment where as the Sr500 has alot of adjustment and the bart pre and pups have a greater amount of boost and cut available to you. If you want to get near to the SR type of mids leave the mid frequency pot at center and boost from there. i'm guessing the K5 is voiced that way and as such limits you to a certain amount of tones. to be honest you would be better trading in the K5 for an SR505 if you want more flexibility, as the proportions are pretty much the same as should be the neck profiles main difference being the pickups and pre amp and woods. the new sr's have at last got a decent battery box on them rather than the slightly annoying screw plate. but they have a jatoba/bubinga neck now rather than the wenge/bubinga neck on previous models (wenge is now an endangered species). the K5 has the Maple/Walnut neck which is going to give you a brighter sound anyway.

Just won this off the bay (and not a happy bunny!)

very nice, especially for the price with the new pup. hope it sounds as good. might be my way of getting back a ray, though i doubt you'd find many with the ray pup in it -
it may just be the way the K5 is voiced, as feldy likes the mid to be taken out completely so the treble and mid 'boost' may just be very minimal. you could try blending in the bridge pickup more which will reduce the total low end, the bass boost sounds liek ti may be very strong ( i know it is on my SR500) so a little on that maybe even some cut there. it could well be worth getting the pots checked as like you say they could be hosed but i would imagine its the voicing. if i get a chance i'll try and pop down to demark street (only just down the road from work) and see if they have one i can give a try of, that should clear up any of my somewhat hazy memories
In all fairness, she was very pleasant - friendly and knowledgeable. To the point where I actually reconsidered my stance on the place and almost considered buying a bass. Sad that she's gone and has been replaced by another bunch of ignorant muppets.
yeah, if she was in there then i would ask questions or look at stuff, if not i generally didnt bother. she was the one that helped me when i was buying my ibanez, though i think she left just before i bought one and the guys in there pushed me elsewhere. their loss. -
not had the pleasure of trying one of those blazers though given my slightly odd leaning towards a 'P' type bass they could be it (i just don't really like fenders TBH). i canty really see me going for anything other than another Ibanez (should the funds magically appear ) what though could be a cause for a long debate

they are always trying to flog the crap strings in the bass cellar, though go knows why, i went in for some new strings and thought i'd try them and see what they recommended, though i already knew what i wanted. they tried flogging me some sh*te £15 rotos or something, the pack looked like they had been in there for years. weird as they had the expensive DR's and elixirs etc, maybe they look at you (i don't have to dress smart for work) and judge you on that, he cant afford the good ones, sell i'm the crap ones. didn't buy the elixirs i wanted in the end, got em else where. but yeah they are just plain f***in lazy, especially the twat with the curtains -
i think the EQ in the SR500 is different to the system in the K5?
yes the eq is different but i did try a K5 when i was looking at the sr500 and at the time the sr 505 (though i played safe and stayed with a 4) and the K5 had a similar sound to that of the SR500, guess thats the mahogany and similar neck doing alot of that. though the sr has slightly warmer tones, less aggressive i guess. though whack up the treble and bass and scoop the mid and you're not far off feldy.

figured putting up another image of mine can't hurt, though i really need to take a decent photo as my phone is a bit rubbish, deserves better there really is some nice wood markings on this for a stock bass that the picture doesnt show. and the wenge/bubinga neck looks the mutts.

i've gone on and on about my SR500 so i wont go on too much here, suffice to say its the dogs danglies. pretty much every tone i could need for my current band. though i am liking the ATK's and SRX's at the moment, fortunately i dont have the cash
-
i would have thought that you should be able to get the same tones out of your K5 as i can from my SR 500. put you tone controls on their center dents and tweek it from there, cutting the mids completely will loose you in the mix. the K5 may be voiced slightly deeper than the SR 500 so you should be careful of the bass pot as it is quite strong. i like the natural sound of mine btu can tweek it to get loads of tones. feldy's tone is to loose the mid completely but he does tend to dissappear in the mix. mids are your friend.
Well, I've really opened a can of worms here. Every one has an opinion I guess. I am leaning towards Ashdown. The mag 300 210 is a little over my budget and maybe too powerful for just playing at home. I like the look of the EB 15-180 EVO11 though.
the EB's are basically the same amp as the mag just without the VU meter and a lower power stage, you'll get about 100watts out of the combo on its own and would need to add another cab to get the 180. as for the 210 too powerful it does have a volume control and would be ideal should you start gigging or practicing with a drummer if it is just purely home use then the EB would be fine.
-
when i went looking for a combo i tried the rumble 100 and the line 6. the rumble has quite a gritty rocky sound and is pretty loud, the line six has all the effects but the amp itself i found boomy and lacking clarity and volume. i tried the hartke little wedge type combos and they ahd a nice sound but again didnt go loud enough. the mag 300 210 which i ended up buying (on the back of trying out the mag 300 15 combo) is waaay louder and has a larger spectrum of tones from it, it doesnt have the effects of the line6 or the red flashy light thing of the rumble but everything else it does have works well and even on its own its more than enough for most gigs, want more get an extension cab and it goes up to it full 307watts, though it is really heavy. never had a problem with my mag and had it for over a year now. and i am pushing the mag, really worth the money, or go second hand and pick up something a little more choices choices.

you lucky luck lucky barsteward looks like it could be one of these two http://www.statii.com/status_cats/reviews/2/index.html as they have the wooden composite neck (eg 2 graphite rods in the neck), yours looks like it may have a mahogany body which would make it the energy, still alot of bass for your money.
-
if you are looking to something a little more 'rocky' (not adriannnnnnn!!!) check out the atk's or srx's, the tones from those 2 are a little more aggressive, more like a stingray so may just be the way to go, and as you know you are gonna get alot of bass for your money.
-
yep truely great basses, the atk or srx might be my next bass, i already have the sr500 (just in case some of you havent heard me going on about how amazing it is) which is amazing, though i still like the stingray tone so the atk may well be just it. dammit more GAS.

been loving my 2x10 mag combo since i first fired it up, certrainly not wooly, guess its just the 15's that do it, they are not as bad as alot of people make out.
Just to clarify on that fact. Compression won't help if you're already overloading the input stage - it'll still be distorted! However running the amp at a slightly low preamp gain level and then hitting a compressor will achieve a much more workable result ready for the power amp
so use the compressor in the effects loop rather than before the preamp? generally i set the gain no more than 3/4 but i also have the ashdown VU to check levels don't go over the red too much, the gain will determine how clean your signal is and the health of your amp too. your eq qill have an impact on the gain level though which is what i found with my ashdown. ie turning up the bass level on the eq will push the VU higher so gain has to be reduced. the 5fifteen doesnt have any clip indication so you will just have to use your ears but you should be able to hear when it start to clip just dont drive the gain too high.

any advice on easyest way to learn to pop and slap?
lowhand_mike replied to valentine's topic in Theory and Technique
i also disagree with the nay sayers. i don't use it (much) in our covers band but i love the sound of it, and its fun to play and i found it improved my dexterity in finger style and overall timing. though i started playing over 10 years ago and its only really recently that i'm getting more of the hang of it, thats not to say you cant do now though it might just take a bit more graft. if you want to have a go just do it -
faith no more, particularly king for a day fool for a life time, some cracking tracks on there.
