good to hear you have a solution, though didn't bill say the beta 10b is 16 ohm, so with 2 of them you would have an 8ohm cab, which would draw less power from your amp, unless of course you have found an 8ohm beta 10b in which case i'll can it and its much safer to replace both drivers as bill said the oem drivers tend to be a bit cack. (and overly priced)
It's a bit more complex than just volume though - if you have ports, which many bass cabs do, their diameter and length are part of the cab tuning and that may affect driver choice too. Hopefully Messrs Claber or Fitzmaurice will be along to give a definitive answer here. Of course, you might strike lucky with a randomly or inexactly chosen driver but on the other hand you might waste your money! If you're going to fork out on an expensive driver like an Eminence Deltalite or the like then build a BFM cab around it - it'll probably be better than the cab the drivers were intended for anyway and a butchered "name" cab will probably be devalued.
yeah, ooops forgot about the ports.
The only way to know whether new drivers will be an improvement is by knowing what's in there now, then comparing the two. Unless the originals are absolute junk you may find there's little, if any, benefit in changing them. OTOH many OEM drivers are junk.
so how can you tell what the drivers are? say for example you take the drivers out of my ashdown, they have their own drivers in there but it says very little on the back of the magnet casing. all i know is the ohms and watts and size
You have to visit The Bass Cellar and be treated like dirt. It's the law. If you could spend one night at Fawlty Towers, you'd do it, wouldn't you?
thems the rules. when i do go in there i try and treat them how they treat me so i gage it on how they react to start with. its worth going in just to have a look at the stuff. plenty of choice to get what you are after though down the whole street.
+ 1 The cab and driver can't be considered in isolation. Take Bill Fitzmaurice's designs for example - he doesn't necessarily specify the most expensive drivers - in fact some are quite low-end - but they are matched to the enclosures and give good results. Unless you have access to the original driver's specs or can model the cabinet in one of the bits of software about it will be difficult to know what to use. Don't buy an expensive driver and hope it will give good results - it might be awful.
i recently had a noodle around on one of the websites selling speakers, and they do sometimes tell you the volume of enclosure required to use them correctly, and in doing so allow you to match to either the enclosure you have or intend to build. so if you could measure the internal dimentions of your cab you could then work out the internal volume and match to and appropriate driver. alex or bill though would be better suited to giving a detailed idea of what to do.
Bear in mind Ashdown's reputation for reliability isn't much better than Behringer.
yeah there was a period where it went a bit screwy but that appears to be sorted, i bought my mag after they got this corrected and mine has been fine. but the main problems they had were with the amp sections not the speakers. the mag cabs offer a much better quality than the behringers for not much more dosh.
Hmmmmm..... interesting. See me, I can't even talk to anyone without mucking up....
yep i have the same problem, not too bad if its just root notes but other wise i have to keep me mouth shut, which is no bad thing.

seeing as my head's up me arse its quite far from me fingers so it can take a while. really varies on the song and the shape of the notes to my fingers

how about this, http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~A...115~ID~1450.asp very good for the money and will certainly be more reliable than the behringer, you could go for the 2x10 for a few dollars more.

+1 for the SR500, mine is my third bass, and for the price its amazing. the sound is really good as is the amount of different tones you can get out of it, easy to play and pretty light, looks good too. go for it. as for an amp i can also recommend the ashdown electric blue ( i have the slightly more expensive and powerful mag 300 2x10 combo) and the ibanez sounds really nice through it.

What's wrong with my new bass? :(
I've also just noticed that the pups seems to be set higher on the low end side.. not sure if that would make a difference but I'm straightening them anyway lol
that could well be it as you say it mainly does it on the E string. if it still does it after lowering it then best get it back to where you bought it, even if it does turn out to be something simple then at least you are covered. also try one other new battery as the old one you tried could have been too low in power and the new one just duff, unlikely i know but it does happen. -
fog fluid inside my combo head

ok hopefully this will be the final update on this. we had practice last night so this was the test. it all turned on ok, it played at a high volume with no problems. and now for some reason everything works better than before, the VU meter actually shows the levels properly rather than the needle just mooching around near the left hand side of the meter. the sub harmonics now work at any level ( I could never really hear it doing anything before) its almost as if having sprayed the whole of the inside of the head with switch cleaner it has cleaned out all the contacts so they are working perfectly. th e only thing is there is a bit of a funky smell coming out the back from the heat sinks but then that is probably just a bit of the oil and spray being burnt off slowly as it wasnt over heating. i just need to keep an eye on the fan to make sure it doesn't stick (with all that oil on it it shouldn't but then it could attract dust. i was very very very lucky. -
Where would you say MOST of your sound comes from?

fingers strings bass eq amp eq in that order -
you would need to work out the internal volume to match the speakers to it there is this quote about a similar driver( from the talkbass post) "It is nearly identical to an Eminence BP102. The BP102 is a better driver, but it requires a 23% larger volume." there is this post on talkbass that covers a similar theme. may help you choose the correct driver http://www.talkbass.com/forum/archive/inde...p/t-150625.html it also depends on the ohm rating of the speakers, i think your 2x10 is rated at 4ohms so you would need 2 8ohm drivers

mine has 2 soap bars (barts mk1's) the neck has a bit of a P sound too it, though much smoother and warmer depending how much bass/mid/treble boost/cut you give. with the treble rolled off you get a very smooth tone (think a warmer "Come Together" tone) but loads of depth. with the treble on it has that P 'growl" (cant think of a better word) but again a bit warmer. the bridge bar is far more mid and lack the low end grunt the neck gives but cuts through. again the sound can be changed by where you play over the pick ups, so for a real nasaly honk play it over the bridge end but you'll need to boost the bass a bit. played both together you get a bit of a Jazz sound but with far more warmth to it, clean mids and biting treble and a thick low end. doesnt have the dryness a jazz can have. this is also heavily dependant on the type of wood the body and neck has as well as the eq (in my case and active Bart mk1 with mahogany body, wenge/bubinga neck) i'm sure there is someone more eloquent than me to give a similar description.

it may be worth going direct to peavey but they may not tell you ok just did a quick search and the TVX uses this speaker http://www.copystars.com/peavey_sheffield_..._18442_prd1.htm not found any in the UK yet though. they equate to about £35, so you would be far better off replacing both drivers with something a little better that suits the cab. you'll need someone like BFM or Alex to guide you further on that one though
The only problem i have with this amp is trying to get the gain and volume balanced right so that it doesn't keep clipping into the red on the VU and making that disgusting distortion sound...
hmmm, you need to first make sure you are pluggin into the correct input, high for passive and low for active. set your volume low and then set you volume on you bass to where you want it, then bring up the gain till you 'hear' it start to clip, the VU 'should' show you but i really depends what note you play to how it reacts. use your ears. then when you here it start to clip back it off a bit and you should be set there. then bring up you volume. also worth baring in mind is that as soon as you start to boost the eq on the amp it will effect the gain, more boost will mean you may have to back off the gain some more to stop clipping. the volume is just the final output level. the input level controls what is going through the amp (and VU meter) and therefore how quickly it will hit its ceiling.

Does playing covers sap your imagination and playing
lowhand_mike replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
I think it does, quite regularly. People are out there watching bands and then quickly become aware that they are seeing the same thing again and again and eventually stop going and stay at home with Cds, DVDs and YouTube. So the audience in 2008 is not the same audience as in 2005; they have all gone home to their iPods. As a musician and music fan who spends 100s of hours and 1000s of pounds a year on music, I am amazed at how rare it is to see something that I want to go out to see/hear. I think this dumbing down is undermining the potential of live music and is, in the long run, counter-productive....
there is a pub near me that always has live music be it original or covers and is always packed and has been doing this for a very long time. but what right for one man is complete tosh for another. aint humans great. -
I did a gig on Saturday, best paid one in a month. 'I Will Survive'; 'Angels'; 'Signed, Sealed Delivered' - all the hits. Professional? Yes. Competent? Yes. Creative? - in no way whatsoever. It's the MacDonaldisation of music. Do you want fries with that?
sorry but i dissagree with that. the "MacDonaldisation of music" IMHO is actually the constant release of 'best of' and 'NOW' style compilations, they require no effort, simply regurgitating the same stuff for quick satisfaction. cover bands require creative input to do the songs. if you choose to mearly regugitate the songs then that up to you. personally most of the cover bands i have seen take their own spin on it no matter how trival you might think it is. doing covers isn't a quick fix solution, they must be learned crafted and then performed to an audience and its rare that it is performed in a clinical manner so as to mimmic the original. -
er ok depends what kind of sound you are after. i like a bright(ish) sound so i have gain on about 3/4 bright switch in, deep in, eq in. bass at about half 12, mid bass at about half 2, mid at about 12, high mid about 3-4 o'clock treble on about 1 o'clock. sub on at about 1 o'clock. volume to my pleasure. i can then from that dial in a good range of sounds from the eq on my bass but then it is active so i can cut as well as boost. as yours is passive you may have to play from there as it depends what the 'natural' sound of your bass is, as in deep or bright or midi etc. hope that helps
Seems that way eh? I just don't get why it'd start off intermittently doing it and now this...
things like that start off intermittent and then just die. (electrical equipment is so dramatic, it does just stop working, it dies!) i've had speakers (car ones) where the cone has dropped but still played but really distorted as it was scratching on the coil so it was still getting a signal. sounds like yours isn't even getting a signal to try and use. i'd go with ferret's diagnosis of it's f***ed!! you could just replace the one speaker but you would be better off getting a new matching pair. unless the speaker input is a bit screwed. ok that didnt help much
