This is actually not true. What you may have experienced is the pickhand of the G*****st hitting one of the pots on the said instrument, thus causing what may sound like a temporary reduction in noise. I heard this phenomenon last night & had to investigate it.
strangely i haev to keep telling our lead guitard to turn up, whereas the rythmn we keep telling to turn down. they're only superficial anyway.
Checked out Aria's site - couldn't find a damn model, similar to this... It looks like one of those new, 20th Anniversary SR Ibbies, like Geiler has, just with a bit less Eq knobs One more, I've found out there...
just a shame you cant see the headstock as that would help.

Does playing covers sap your imagination and playing
lowhand_mike replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
it also really depends on how you tackle the songs you are covering. i have found alot of rock stuff allows for a certain amount of improvisation without straying from the original feel of the tune, though some songs do have prominant bass lines that have to be played exactly. but then i am seeing it from just the covers side and would probably feel differently IF i had played in an originals band to start with. -
How should we do one? Make a sticky thread about Ibby chicks or make sorta friend-list or whatever exists here? Btw, tell me, if it's Ibby, guys...
not sure about setting up the list but that pic sure looks like an ibby, headstock and body shape and 5 piece neck though it would be a custom build i would imagine as i've never seen a fretless soundgear.
But surely your 8x8 can't sound good as it suffers from comb filtering issues?? Or is that my point; these things can sound good in spite of the science?
yeah they can sound good. but could they sound better  :brow:
OK, maybe the Video idea wasn't the most convincing suggestion!! To the OP, if it stacking a 1x15 on top of a 2x10 sounds good to you, then screw the science.
exactly
Audio facts are consistent but there are many valid opinions on how you combine those criteria into a successfully engineered bass cab. My problem is that some people here think that your opinions are facts. This is plainly not true. Your opinions of bass cab design are on the margin and people here should realise that. In another topic you completely dissed Fender and Marshall and then the rest of the industry for “sell(ing) all the mediocre high profit margin junk they can crank out”. Well, if we all take a step back we will see you standing on your own bitterly shouting at the world, "you're all wrong and I'm the only one who is right", and the rest of the bass cab industry carrying on regardless, successfully making and selling great gear. Please people; Bill Fitzmaurice's opinion is only one amongst many. Buy your cabs based on what you want to hear, not what he thinks is "sound audio practice". I don't like conflict. I'm done with this. Bill, you can have the last word!
not here to do some chris bashing so dont take it that way what bill says aren't actually his opnion (well it is kind of) but based on scientific fact. if you open most bulk built cabs they are just speakers in a box, maybe a bit of bracing and internal damping will be minimal. my combo has no internal damping, its just bare wood. its ported and will have a small amount of internal tuning but not much as its far easier to produce a box than a complicated horned cab. even the seperated cabs boast that their deeper bass response is due to a bigger box not really much else. that fact is fender and marshall just built there cabs in a convenient aethetical way. the technology just wasnt there to say wether it was right or wrong. things change and technology certainly has, where else would all these amazing basses amps and effects come from, its just the cabs haven't really followed suit. even the 'high end' manufactureres still make cabs in the traditional 2x10, 4x10, 8x10, 2x12 etc, yes the 2xXX cabs can be turned on their side and some people will have discovered on their own that it sounds better that way stacked but the 4xXX and 8xXX cant be changed no matter how you position them. and if you bought 2 1x15 cabs you would naturally stacke them vertically which would be the correct way to do it even if you didnt know it. no one is saying that what you are doing chris is wrong, or anyone else for that matter, its been done for years and been enjoyed by millions. you pays your money etc it's just if you want the best out of your gear (scentifically/sonically) or just advice on what is going on when you do something with your setup then bill and alex and ferret really are worth listening too. you dont have to take their advice though. and at no point in this has bill said that his designs should be bought by all as they are the best, he's not selling anything here just giving free advice, his designs sell themselves through other users. do i own one? no. do i want one? yes. will i ever build one? who knows. and thats just the thing i'll see what i like the sound of and not be told i HAVE to have such and such an amp and cab setup. i am erring to the side of the 2 2x10 setup but part of me still screams "no the traditional 2x10 1x15 setup" is the right way to go. we'll see.

+ the 1 sorry sonic heaven was a bit tongue in cheek but at least it made sense for a change
+10000 the behringer compressor is one behringer effect that IMO beats the Boss, but interesting that you think it beats the modded version too, iv never tried the modded, just stock
the modded one was quite noisey, too much hiss, it just didnt sound right where as the behringer was virtually transparent.
-
tried my behringer compressor sustainer side by side with my guitarists modded boss version, and to be honest the behringer sounded much cleaner. theres really not much in it imo apart from the price and at £20 for the behringer you cant really go wrong, yeah you can go and spend wads but for your first pedals they are a steal.
I'm pretty sure the bassist in Bon Jovi and the one for Bryan Adams DI in the studio and on stage. They may use the 4x12 stacks for monitoring (if any of them are actually hooked up to anything). I will say that charic and chris have a point that when it comes to live work where you're going through a PA and good monitors, dispersion from your cabs and their frequency response don't matter so much 'cos they're mainly for show. The rest of your band will hear you through monitors - not from your amp - and the audience will hear you from the PA speakers. Chris and various others are also right that if something sounds great then science won't disprove that. I will never go back to using standard bass cabs again though. They can't match the low end depth and mid-range clarity of 3-way cabs - and that is what I want from my cabs.
i think this is where the miss conception is, when going through the PA your rig is your monitor and the onstage sound will probably not suffer from the stacking problems, its out front where the patchiness comes in and the PA takes care of that. it is however when you are using your rig to do the front of house sound, to get the absolute best sound it makes sense to follow bills advice but that by no way means that the traditional format wont work. alot of the big bands use in ear monitoring and the cabs on stage are really for show and what you hear out front is all from the massive PA. basically if it works for you and you and your band are happy with the sound you are getting then keep doing it, if you are looking for sonic heaven (did i just say that) then go down bills route. just to prove a point, my combo sounds great wether on its side or in normal position when i'm up close to it (within about 7ft) its when i move alot further away that things change, when its in its normal position you can find 'dead spots' in the room when its on its side the sound is much more consistant. i have yet to try any other combinations of cabs and so am currently taking heed from those who have built and tried bills designs and what bill recommends, but if i find that i like the sound of a 2x10 1x15 setup then thats what i'll use, however the 2x10 will still be on its side. at then end of the day there really is no right or wrong here just what sounds best to you.
Thanks for thoughts, guys, I'll give SRX a go this or next week, I believe. And, 170 pounds is OK for used one, right? P.S. As the Rare-ones, we'd set Ibazzy owners/lovers club, shouldn't we?..
sounds like a good price, they go for about £360 new (RRP £399) i was looking at these before i bought my SR but never tried one, i preferred the shape of the SR. though i am getting the urge for a new bass this could fit the bill nicely. i'll have to go try one now. i could swear there was an ibanez club on here but that may have been on the old site, nice idea though. count me in

think bill means that as the "norm" for bass amps and indeed guitar amps was started back in the day as horizontal 2x10s and 4x10s when audio engineering was a little less refined it has been carried through, and as we tend to accept what we are given unquestionably, manufacturers can produce cabs that 'work' at a reduced R&D cost and as an accepted aesthetic. IF a manufacturer produced a combo for example that had its 10s stacked vertically i'm sure it would get a very mixed response regardless of its audio capabilities. yes 2x10s are avaliable that you can stack vertically but then where do you put your amp as it will be (in general) too wide for the cabs. oh and not 8x10's unless they are in a really really tall cab. (drivers stacked vertically which doesn't exist)
I've got a signature electronics coco bolo Alembic and it's f***ing jaw dropping. That bass has the series II electronics so I would imagine it's pretty stellar as they are considered the best Alembic do.
i bet the price is f***ing jaw dropping too cant deny the fact it looks awesome though.
Don't buy an ABM cab if your gonna do this Mike, the 'ergonomic' design of the handles makes it a little wobbly as my foot will testify.
cheers mate but i wasnt going to get the abm anyway, based on bill's and ferrets advice i beleive it would be wise to stay with the MAG voicing (also they cost too much). just need to wok out how to stack em as they are slightly different sizes in depth and hight. still gassing for bfm onmi 10 though or the tall boy 12.
-
i think the way you need to look at this is that guys like bill really know their stuff but if you choose not to take that advice its fine, i have taken notice of alot of points and they have improved my sound. like turning my combo on its side so the 10's are vertically stacked. i will also be buying another 2x10 cab to complement it. (not the 15 like i had planned). but like said play what you like, it's your money and gear after all.
-
i dont own one but from what i have read elsewhere (and i think on here previously) is that the srx sounds more like a ray than the sr, little more harsh due to the two humbuckers rather than soap bars. it will be a different sound to your current one definately. give one a try if you can though.
I think you point is very erudite and I completely understand your position. I don't think our actual positions are that far apart. Remember, I do play in covers bands - in fact, if you consider jazz standards to be covers, which, for the sake of this argument, I do, then ALL of my work is with covers bands. And I don't despise it. I don't despise the audiences at functions and I don't despise the musicians who I play with. I can sometimes get off on a rock shuffle or a funk riff just as much as a swing groove, samba or quaquanco! I just get a bit tired of people sending me cds with tracks on like 'Ain't Nobody' and saying can you learn them for Saturday's wedding. Maybe I should just demand that people write out charts so I don't have to! My music study time is of profound importance to me and I have to steal it whenever I can. I therefore don't want to spend these (increasingly rare) moments learning 'Le Freak' because, in the great scheme of things, it is bubblegum. I can nail that stuff, no problem. but, as I said early on, its a shallow victory. I guess I want more from this enterprise than cheap thrills. I wish I could find that 'inner peace' you clearly have! (I've had an idea for another book - Zen and the Art of Tribute Bands!! )
aaah. i think i may have misunderstood your stand point slightly. and may have missed an earlier post that either said or eluded to the fact that you also play covers. which also makes your points a little more clearer and yet also slightly confusing in that you dont advocate what you do or maybe only slightly. i can understand that you study time is important as mine is virtually non existant and normally revolves around me snatching 5-10 mins here or there until the next practice. the fact that you want more is for you to achieve and aspire to and i'm sure within all of us there is a want to move on so to speak. the grass is unfortunately always greener. but some of us may just be happy where we are and accept our position and if anything does come up to change that then well embrace it as fully as we embrace our current line up of cliches hmm hope that makes some sense and comes across how i ment it. (non confruntational) i know where you are coming from. enjoy what you do and take from it what you want. there in lies the inner peace, be it from playing covers or learning a new scale. if you dont enjoy what you do there really is no point doing it imo.
-
its horses for courses really. i didnt get into music with any massive serious intent, i wanted to learn bass, had a faint incling of starting an original band but that just never happened, i kind of fell into the band i am now in and enjoy it. if tribute and cover band are indeed tired and culturally redundant then they would have no place in the music scene. yes it is a more local and convenient way of hearing live music were the original bands would never play and allows a more simplistic way of getting into playing live music. personally i feel that music presents much more than just the marketable product, i would have to really as i have made very very little from playing in our band, i get alot from just the practicing and playing live than the final payoff. i also dont see anyone form of music as further up a hierarchy than another. they are imo all of equal measure regardless of wether i actually like them, they all have their advocates and fans and therefore have their place. (though i will admit to often saying 'x' band is way better than 'y' band but that refers to preference rather than ability or relevance). as to wether your final comment offends, i am sure most people on here are wise enough to respect one opinion from another, and without this mix of opinions we would surely all be playing and listening to the same stuff. variety as they say is the spice of life.

have you checked your firewall allowed applications? it may just be that that is blocking it as its a new bit of software and windows security settings tend to be a bit over protective.

+1 also. never had a woolly sound out of mine.
