Whats the hardest bassline you've ever played?
lowhand_mike replied to rodneymullen's topic in General Discussion
Hysteria was one I had wanted to get for a few years but just couldn't so I left it, I tried again recently and found some useful youtube stuff and some tab (though not quite right) and gave it a go, but I just couldn't do it the same way that some of these vids and tab were saying it should be done, I transposed it to an easier format (still the same notes) and it made sense but the constant note flow and speed took a while to get and killed my arm but its done now yay! Just need the effects to get it to sound spot on Steve harris is awesome, number of the beast is a favourite of mine if a little tricky. My generation solo still causes me headaches even though i know how to play it sometimes my fingers simply refuse Weirdly enough even though we play sweet home chicago i still cant get the exact line that duck plays, mainly due again to the all over the neckness of it towards the end. Guess i should learn me scales a bit more. -
Potential Sound Control Ripp Off/Scam?
lowhand_mike replied to ednaplate's topic in General Discussion
alot of places do this kind of thing, but if you pull them up on it they back track, doesnt sound like SC are. imagine going into currys for a tv only to be told the remote was extra -
+1 for bass cellar being sh*te! simone was ace and fortunately when i was trying basses and settled on the ibby she was working there, the shop across the road had bass amps that i wanted to try and she happily took the ibby from the cellar over to the other shop (cant remember name) they were obviously connected but those guys in there now would never do something like that, nobs. Strangely enough the guys in the 'other' shop were actually ok if a little uninterested but at least they let you try stuff with out making you feel a nuisance. i work about 5 mins away from there but very rarely go there cos of the sh*tty attitude. i remeber going to denmark street years ago (well before i worked in london) and it was actually a nice place to visit, this was when the bass cellar was in the cellar where the drum place was.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
lowhand_mike replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
can't beleive how many pedals some of you guys use, you have more than my guitarist and i thought he had too many only just bought my first pedal (compressor) and cant think of much else i'd need, well apart from a bit of distortion and maybe some chorus (used to have one) and maybe a decent octaver -
headstock looks familiar, i thought it might be a vigier, there is also another company that have writing in that same position but i cant for the life of me think who it is right now. off to do some google searches.

good luck fella if you are using a different amp then try and leave your bass set as is (or at least make a note of your settings so you can get them again) and tweak the amp to your bass and you should be able to get near to your current sound, you can then always do subtle tweaks onyour bass eq.

how did it sound in the mix when all playing together? i tend to find i get a sound i like but then in the band situation i can get lost, and what has usually happened is i've rolled off the mids too much, so adding a little can bring it back up in the mix but i'm liking a deeper sound at the moment. i'f you have it on your amp increase the low mids as for me this adds some punch.

yeah choosing new songs is really hard, especially as the singer and rythmn are brothers and mid to late 40's, lead guitarist late 30's to early 40's (strange i've never asked their age i suppose) drummer and me mid 30's. also our musical tastes are VERY different. The older 3 like the classic rock stuff (some of which i had never heard before) and me and the drummer like thing like more recent rock, muse for example and some more funky stuff and my tastes go off to metal too. Bugs me that nothing i have picked so far has actually been played, worse still they did choose 2 songs that i put forward only to percistantly say they haven't got round to learning it, i gave up asking. dont get me wrong whatever i play i enjoy what i am doing, it just seems i just have to do as i'm told. edit again cos that just sounds like i'm wingeing i'm not honest. though you can tell what songs they really want to do cos they are the only ones they learn first. -
We travelled almost 2 hours in the rain from London to play in a Marquee up north somewhere It was a sat afternoon and its was a wedding reception at a pub. when we got there we found it was in a pub garden and the "marquee" was more of a Gazebo. Only three sides and not big enough to house more than half the guests. We had to walk the gear across the garden in the rain (it was of course on a slight incline), through the crowd that had gathered to keep out of the rain and so wouldnt move and put our gear down at the wet end of the "tent". That to me is a "I really want to be at home watching paint dry" moment.
wasn't going to post this cos i didn't think it fitted but after that it does. we were asked to play at a birthday at a posh area in north london (more like hertfordshire) the drive up looked promising as most of the houses were huge so we figured we'd have plenty of room. Though the house we had to play at was of a reasonable size it wasnt anywhere near some of its neighbors. anyhoo we duely unloaded to be shown the "marquee" we were to set up under which was about an 8ftx8ft gazeebo, add to that the fact that it started raining as we unloaded. we crammed our stuff under the gazeebo and started setting up with makeshift side to the cover put in place. we just about got all our stuff under it let alone getting us under it. it preceeded to lash it down for about an hour or so and we were near to sacking it off when it did clear for about an hour an fortunately only started coming down again when we finished. Needless to say we didn't do the second half of our set and played a shorted version of the 2 sets. they seemed quite happy even if it was difficult to do without electrocuting yourself. the annoying thing was they had 4 large gazeebos dotted around the garden which nobody seemed interested in using when could have done with that space. oh well live and learn.
Unfortunately being a good lead vocalist and crap bass player is better for the band and audience than the other way around. You have been doing it right, but you should be working on being a better bass player.
second that unfortunately people rate a band on how good the vocals are, if they suck then it doesnt matter how good the band are. a situation i have found myself in many times and i dont sing (fortunately i cant do both) EDIT:- maybe that should read fortunately i can only do one of them well
i got the SR500 like mike, and an ashdown amp (EDIT: just realised, also like mike lol). my tone's easy to get. bass all the way up on the amp, bass all the way up on the bass. mid stays on flat on both amp and bass. treble boosted by about half on bass, same on amp. then i have my deep switch pressed in on the amp. i have it favouring my front pickup slightly. thats when im playing with a pick. with my fingers i only boost the bass by about half on the bass rather than all the way up and then make the bass favour the back pickup slightly. other than that all settings stay the same. love the one in your avatar, by the way, faithless. im guessing thats the one your asking about.
lol i started reading that and thought blimey bass all the way up on both and then saw "thats when i'm playing with pick" and though phew! try that with fingers and the amp wont be happy. i find the bass pot on the bass has loads to give so i dont use too much of that
-
ah, feel better about that, as i hadnt really noticed anything going on, but then i havent really played with it off either and i have the bright and deep switches on so there is probably a limited amount that the 10's can cope with i just figured it was the only thing on the amp that didnt work considering the ashdown blurb says "truck loads of earth shattering tone", hopefully get a 15 soon so i'll see then.
Good God, I thought it was just me! I told our singer the other day we should be listed as a 5 piece band, not a 4 piece, as the singer's music stand is quite literally a permanent member!
you're not alone, i can understand and accept it at practice but live really bugs me, suppose the upside is we dont need a set list as he has his bible in front of him. alot of the songs i know the words too and i dont sing. blimey -
Constant Annoyances Pick a couple of tunes to learn, make a rehearsal date. Learn all bass parts, get lyrics (e-mail to singer), prepare chord sheet as a guide, maybe get the tabs and check they're correct (e-mail to guitarist). Listen to songs so many times you know them inside out. Turn up to rehearse. Singer needs to download lyrics of the internet again and is only vaguely familiar with the melody of the song. Guitarist has never heard the song before, "Have you got a copy with you?" Proceeds to play along with it 15 seconds into the intro trying to work out chords. Inevitably gets chords right but not quite. Disputes chord sheet already prepared as doesn't fit with melody singer is singing in places. Defeated. Warm Fuzzy Feelings For our drummer who is always a pleasure to play with; will have learned his parts when time comes for him to join rehearsals (he won't come to the chord haggling sessions anymore, don't blame him either); always does more than his share of loading and setting up and nearly always gets the drinks in as he's usually set-up first.
+100 for both of them. the amount of times we have spent weeks deciding on new songs to do and then said "right next week make sure you know the songs, get lyrics.." etc and we turn up and genrally i'm the only one who has even got the songs let alone got tab or worked out the songs, i then get asked can i make a copy of the tracks for everyone else so i know that even the next week no one is gonna know their parts and the singer still wont have the words. AAARRGGHHH! and then even whe he has the words and says he's been listing to them constantly in the car (drives alot) still doesnt know how they go and we have to tell him. rythmn guitarist who no matter how we try and explain it doesnt get the concept of palm muting. lead guitarist after a year and a half of saying he will get his pedals on a board, hasn't done it so take ages each practice to set up. drummer is an angel though and the guys are a laugh just sometimes they take the piss, with the exception of the drummer -
my tuner aint nothing special, cost about £10 or something. does the job but really doesnt like the open G so that gets done 12th fret harmonic. in tune with the rest of the band, shame ya cant get a tuner for the singer cant understand how anyone could not use a tuner to be honest.
I joined a band on bass but couldn't play it - I had 3 weeks and 20 odd songs to learn before the first gig. I was searching frantically on the internet for advice and stumbled upon Bassworld. I haven't done a full day's work since and still can't play the bass.
pretty much the same here, think i found talkbass first but didnt like it much over there and then stumbled on bassworld. i was joining a band and needed some help brushing up on my dusty memories of playing had to learn a load of songs and try and find a bass and amp. Though i didnt buy one for ages this place eased my gas (didnt know what that was then) but caused much moral torment i lurk, i go away, i come back, i sometimes join in, i sometimes say too much. But such a nice bunch dont seem to mind.
I feel the ABM has a few features that aren't terribly useful to anyone. The sub out and 'sub-harmonic generator' (octaver) being two of them. In the real world no-one is going to bring an extra sub with them..
been nagging me for a while so i'll ask here, does anyone really notice the subharmonic generator with it on or do you really need something like a sub cab to get the effect from it? i just figured mine did not much at all.
The whole idea of coated strings like elixirs (who coat all of the string) is partly for a smoother feel, but mainly so the coating fills the gaps and keeps all the gunk out. When elixirs die, it's probably down to being streched so much, rather than gunk stopping them resonating properly I reckon. You'd have to ask them whether using a cleaning solution would affect the coatings, but once the coatings go, it's probably time to buy new strings.
yeah i know, but they still get crap on them, just wondering if they can be wiped down in the same way.

I dont have the vari mid on mine i have the bartolini mk1 eq and pups but i can give some help i think. My ibby (SR500) is very sensitive to adding treble and tends to be on the bright side anyway. for metal and rock i tend to roll back the mid a touch and push things towards the neck pup which gives a harsher tone, more like a 'P'. as for trujillos tone i would imagine there is a certain amount of distortion added to the mix which tends to add top end anyway. Also where you play on the bass will help, play over the neck pup and if you can try playing towards the neck, this will give a deeper tone but will also give you some top end as the strings are more flexible around this point and make contact with either the pups or the neck which give a kind of click buzz type thing (not fret buzz though it quite nice) best thing to do is start with the EQ flat and then roll off mid and go from there but only little bits at a time other wise you'll get lost. hope that helps if it doesnt i appologise.
