it took guitars quite a while to "settle" at six strings - tell that your guitar guy. Besides, most guitarists hardly use all their strings, and 7 string guitars are wicked and far too rare. more strings are harder to keep quiet and the instrument becomes a bit heavier to carry, that's all I can see really. how about pianos? church organs? it is just so absurd how fixed rock people are on gear. ever noticed if a viola has four or five strings? does anybody notice 4 or 5 strings on a double bass? anybody bothered for the brand of violins? all crap in my opinion: the music matters thats all. as long as you play it to play it, not to wave it round, its all good. And if people say something critical, they are just envious.

Still advertising the Minimark - just because it's REALLY light, and you can still add a cab. It fits into hand luggage... I walk it like a hand bag. Of course, bigger speakers - bigger sound. But if all you want is a stage monitor, and if you are playing double bass, then not having a big box make the fine but distinctive difference of being able to carry both instrument AND amp without strain on the back. As much as I adore the shuttle and so on, just the fact that they are sort of cube shaped makes it hard to imagine carrying them in on hand easily which you can with something even smaller that doesn't bang on you knee. So it all really depends.

I would actually really like to read something qualified about GAS from a psychologist. Fact is that if we'd all spent half the money we spend on gear on lessons instead we'd surely be going somewhere. It surely has aspects of "Ersatzhandlung" ie. act of compensation. How much time do you spend browsing stuff rather than practising, or even better: playing? My theory is that because making music is somehow addictive, and bass players have the particular difficulty to always need a band to do so, we dive into gear instead. I know quite a lot of musicians too busy playing to develop gas - most professionals that I know have very little gear (mostly due to being broke, moving house all the time and so forth). Could be worth hinting some psychology student towards this board to conduct a study.

Welcome. And I'm sure you will find plenty of support, advice and - well, gear, here.

crap bridge, I had the same. Schaller fits perfectly, - yes, expensive (more than the bass almost) but THAT made the difference, more than the pup. http://www.thomann.de/de/schaller_bass_bri...0_4s_chrome.htm graffiti: get some transparent plastic, cut the stencil, then contact glue, then spray, then wait till it's dry, stencil off; then coat of gloss if you think that's necessary... but trust me, there is NO graffiti you will not regret in 20 years time - besides, you're not banksy. just my private opinon plus, why not make it sound really good first, and then you can still do the art? - or find somebody who does original, really good art work?

This: not so much for the magnifying glass, but serves as "third hand". really useful. and, get a soldering station: biggest problem is that if you don't have anything to securely put down / into the hot iron, you inevitably burn yourself, your bass, or the mains power lead. this looks ok http://www.maplin.co.uk/40w-soldering-kit-399593 EDIT: check this page http://www.musikding.de/index.php/cat/c201_Loeten.html

Well sometimes it's nice to have a light weight 4 at hand, more for the weight though, I love my 4 yammy cause it's a super easy bring-along play-along, not bothered much about it, can swap with other players easily on certain type jam sessions, light on m back and light when I play a long gig, and sounds great.

is it true that while squire basses sound good, squire guitars sound crap? i was under that impression.

Saddle and saddle only. Truss rod is to adjust for a bent neck. As long as your neck is straight, don't touch it. If that needs adjustment, don't mess with it as a layman. Saddle up and bob's your uncle.

fragile stickers - that's like putting a sticker on a car that says "car". take no chances, get a proper case and bob's your uncle.

Hiya, I recently moved from the UK to the continent, and won't be renting a van. How do you guys ship stuff? I have a couple of basses, a cab, even a banged up double bass I'd love to move to Berlin. Might be interesting for our many non-UK friends on this forum too, in terms of buying gear from the UK and so forth. Many thanks for advice.

If it includes a live drummer then the first thing you need to get is proper earplugs

There is more to investment than just the prices going up. Question is, how long is the investment; and, there is usually a trade-off between uncertainty and returns. With other words, a safe investment may be something you buy that does surely not lose any money. So you want to diversify to minimise risk. How about building up a bass fonds: buy a top model of every respected luthier (so people who don't sign trash), so that you end up with say 20 instruments. Some of them might fall in value, some keep their value, and some - though you might not yet know which - become valuable (the right player picking them up). Investment in instruments is just like the antique market is just like the art market. The overheads keeping the investment in good nick are considerable. Plus, you may want to keep an eye on these markets too. Question is, do you think about basses, or investment? Because if the latter is the case, there might be better alternatives. I believe many of us lie to ourselves (or our missuses) when talking about music as "an investment". A very bad one for me so far - had I done work all the time I play music or browse BC, I'd be the rich man that I'm not.

A m8 of mine snapped a double bass string on a rockabilly gig he tried to rip it off with his left hand cut right through to the bone went from stage to hospital straight he's okay now
