I keep finding myself drawn to Epiphone Jack Casady basses when they pop up for sale, but I've not yet had the opportunity to try one. Can anyone tell me if there's much difference between the older Korean models and the more recent ones made in China?

The previous owner had painted it black, then wrapped fishnet stockings around it and sprayed grey over the top to give it a snakeskin effect. It had active Status pickups in and as a result both looked, and sounded, horrible. Looking back I have absolutely no idea why I bought it, other than I had just been bitten by the P-bass bug and it was the cheapest one I could find. I paid £400 plus another £50 for the shop to refinish it. Picked it up a week later and they had done an amazing job. Put some SD Quarter Pounders in it and it’s been my go to workhorse ever since.

I've got a '75 P that I had refinished in natural when I bought it 20 odd years ago, as the previous owner had seen fit to do a DIY snakeskin effect job on it... The body is definitely two different lumps of wood and somebody told me it would have been a solid colour originally to mask this fact, don't know how true that is but sounds feasible. You can see the join line running between the bridge and the scratch plate in the photos.

Absolutely agree. Personally speaking I'm just a sucker for the mojo that an old bass carries, I'd much rather have something that's been around 40-50 years with a few stories to tell than something that's brand new and probably much nicer to play! And you're right, spending a fortune on the right bass now wouldn't necessarily be a bad investment.

I've been looking for a P-bass for a while now but beginning to think the price of a decent one is just not justifiable. I'd like an original sunburst, ideally pre-CBS and definitely one that's been played and has got the scars rather than a case queen but they are crazy money.

I think this guy’s on Reverb as Albert’s Guitar Collection. Always interesting to compare the prices on Reverb and the shop website for the same guitars! He seems pretty pricey but I get the impression he really knows his stuff and the guitars are thoroughly checked out.

The only thing I'm after right now is the Holy Grail, ie a pre-CBS P-bass in original sunburst. For less than a bazillion quid. It's taking a while...

Here's my gorgeous 1978 Fender Jazz bass, original sunburst / maple with mother-of-pearl block inlays, classic '70s combination. A few minor dings on the body but for a 42 year old bass it's really in excellent condition. The original finish on the body is lovely, the fingerboard has had a refret, new nut and been re-lacquered and looks stunning. This one really looks vibrant next to my darker '74. Bridge pickup rewound by Aaron Armstrong.There were a couple of pickguard screws missing when I bought it so I've replaced the lot but the originals are still in the case. Original chrome ashtrays present. All the chrome on this bass looks new. Note: Schaller strap buttons in photos have been replaced with the originals. There has been some work done to stabilise the bullet truss at the headstock end of the neck, the action is now comfortable (although not the world's lowest) and the bullet truss adjusts easily. I understand it's a fairly common issue with these 3 bolt models and I wanted the bass to play as well as it looks. Jon Shuker has done the work, he had to remove the first block inlay and reinforce the wood inside the neck. As you'd expect from Jon, the repairs are totally invisible. The sound hits you right between the eyes, it's super punchy classic Jazz, and tons of variety mixing between the two pickups and the tone control. Weight approx 4.6kg (sorry, not 4.4kg! My bathroom scales were under-reading. In other news, looks like I need to go on a diet...) It will come with a hard case. Funny you should mention it... I got a ‘78 about a year ago, absolutely loved it but it’s needed work doing to the neck due to a truss rod issue so it’s been with the legend that is Jon Shuker for the past month or so. In the meantime I’ve bought a ‘74. They’re both sunburst with maple fingerboards, I did this deliberately so i’ve got no excuse to keep both! Anyway i’m picking it up from Jon tomorrow and will take some pics of the matching pair. Here’s the ‘78: currently speculatively on eBay, once it’s back home and i’m happy with it I’ll be advertising it elsewhere too. It’s had a refret at Jon’s and the fingerboard has been refinished too so it looks stunning.

That book is entirely the reason I now have two '70s Jazz basses and am looking for a '60s Precision. It is a truly lovely thing though.

Hi All, New to the forum and have been spending a lot of time watching the classifieds... I've got a 1978 Jazz which is for me the iconic configuration, sunburst body with maple neck and mother of Pearl block inlays. Unfortunately it's also suffering from a classic 1970's Jazz bass problem, in that when the truss rod is tightened, what actually happens instead of the neck straightening is that the wood under the zero fret block inlay is getting pushed up and as you can see in the photo, the inlay and the fingerboard have cracked. I'm gutted because this bass looks and sounds incredible, and is 100% original. It's just a bit of a dog to play. If I have to get a replacement neck then that's a chunk of money and the bass is suddenly worth a lot less than I paid for it, so I'm hoping one of you nice people is going to say, "oh yes, that happened to mine and it's totally repairable"...

#1 Dream bass for me, this one! Also loving the Shuker fretless in your profile pic, I've always fancied a go on one of those infinity fingerboard things. Although I suspect I would sound terrible...
