1.
...If that means a trip to swansea or cardiff or wherever is near so be it- but go to a proper pro
If you can get yourself to Swansea, then I'd recommend getting Marvin in Cranes to look at it - he's done some good work for me in the past, and at a fair price.
  2.
The Rockbass Corvette's that I have seen have a totally different neck too - I seem to remember them having a maple neck rather than the ovangkol of German made Warwicks - and they feel completely different.
Good reminder! Although, of course, there have been some German-made Wicks with maple necks, like the Fortress I used to own:
  3.
...Usually the difference is much obvious between a Rockbass and European made....
Yes, and no. For the Streamers the difference is obvious: the originals (and the Korean Pros) are curved, whereas the Rockbass is a slab. But for Corvettes the only obvious difference is the tiny writing on the headstock, unless you're looking at a natural finish and can tell one wood from another. But with the Aliens it's more confusing, because they're all made in China, whether they say "Warwick" or "Rockbass".
...Anyway, given that prices are not identicals i presume, i have to check if it does worth the difference.....
The list prices are about £500, £700 and £1500 for the standard, deluxe and Warwick versions (4-string). So yes, there's quite a difference in price! It'd be interesting to hear how different they sound. If you get a 6-string then even the electrics seem to be the same for all 3 models (though they're different for 4 or 5 stringers).
  4. Ooh, a fretless thread, I hadn't noticed this before! Ok, here's a couple of my babies - the heavyweight and the lightweight:
  5. I guess my comments were partly based on this thread: http://forum.warwick.de/10-warwick-bass/13317-just-got-want-refinish-help.html from which I'd expect the stain to be a problem as well, depending on the wood.
  6. Surf green is a much more niche finish than sunburst, and teles seem to be very fashionable at the moment. So I'd expect the Strat to take longer to sell, but I think you should manage to get your price - it doesn't seem unreasonable.
  7. I don't know about Sandbergs, but with Warwicks the word is don't try - the stain goes very deep, so it will be an awful lot of sanding.
  8.
....Having done a bit searching , I see mention of audio log pots , can I tell what the originals are by the markings? when I meaured the resistance it seemed linear , but could that be due to them still being wired in? sorry for the numptiness
You should be able to tell from the markings - if there is an "A" or a "B" next to (or near) where it says 500k then that tells you whether it's audio (A) or linear (. Or if you google a bit more you may find a circuit diagram for your bass, which will also tell you.
  9.
... would external influences have an effect on the resistance measurement across the pot terminals ?
Oh yes, most definitely! To take a silly example, suppose you had a 500k pot, and then soldered a 10k resistor across the terminals. The resistance is going to be a lot less than 500k now, isn't it! So whatever else is wired up to them will affect the reading on the pots. Anyway, I don't think the pots are likely to be a problem - hiss and noise that comes when you touch the strings is usually a sign of earthing issues. The casing of each pot should be connected to the ground on the jack socket - check those wires, and maybe resolder them.
  10. Congratulations! And don't worry, you can put the preamp on the wedding list ...

    We're back...

Good to have you back, and thanks for working so hard to get it fixed so quickly!
  12.
I've mentioned this before but everyone seemed to disagree and I'm probably wrong but I'll say it again for fun. Leads are either 6mm or 1/4" (6.35mm)
Just to extract one highlight from that tb thread that you linked, Neutrik say their jacks are 6.29mm (according to the technical drawing download available from http://www.neutrik.c.../px-series/np2x). So if these differences matter, then there seems to be more choice than simply 6 or 6.35.
  13. What a disappointment. From the title I was expecting a 9-string bass.
  14.
It takes me bloody forever to get to the o2, and it's even worse to get back from....
REALLY? "Bloody forever"? I'm sorry, but it'd take me 3 hours to even get to any of the cities they're playing in, let alone the venue. Forgive me if my sympathy is a little shortcoming at the moment. (And yes, do also forgive me for being one of those poor people that haven't moved to live in the metropolis).
  15. Nice bass!
...The website doesn't say what the fingerboard is made of but I'm certain that it is ebony. ....
It is definitely ebony - that's what Warwick use on absolutely all of their fretlesses (even the Rockbasses), although it's usually called "tigerstripe ebony" because they aren't fussy about getting stuff that's 100% black.
  16. Nice! (Except that it reminds me of my Thumb and its crackly preamp that I really need to sort out ... )
  17. I look forward to seeing what happens when the Rickenwaffe see his mugs.
  18.
...Did you notice the body design which different from the 4 version. No sharp angle on the 5 and 6 versions. ...
Er no, it's a different body design between the Warwick-branded Alien and the Rockbass one. All the RBs have the rounded horn, and all the Warwicks have the sharp (Florentine?) horn: http://www.warwick.de/modules/produkte/produkt.php?cl=EN&katID=23256&linkID=48214
  19.
No idea how much a custom bass costs at all, even after looking over the price list. Do I start with a standard price and add up my custom options?? What if I want a discontinued model, say the original FNA?
Yep, I think the idea is you take the standard price and then add the prices for each individual custom option. If you want to start from a discontinued model, then a) I guess you should just take the closest similar model to give you the base price and b ) there is an extra charge for using a discontinued base (that's somewhere in the CS price list).
I've never understood the Warwick Custom Shop, but that might be because the general aesthetic qualities of Warwick basses on the whole remain a mystery to me. AFAICS from the price list it's not true custom but a very narrow set of standard options that can be applied to selected basses. ...
I think the confusion comes from the fact that the price list is actually just a guide list. It's not an exhaustive list of all the possibilities, it's just a list of common options, and prices for them, so that you can get an idea of the likely RRP of your dream bass. And I suppose it must also give a dealer the means to quote a price without having to directly ask Warwick about your specific specs. And yes, it's a guide to the RRP, so most dealers will discount those prices in the same way they would for an off-the-shelf bass. But that'll still probably leave it in the "if you have to ask ..." category for most of us. Finally, I'd guess that a 2nd hand CS Warwick is probably worth even less than a regular 2nd hand Wick, since it is, by definition, more select in its appeal. (In other words, if the set of options on a particular CS bass was popular, then Warwick would probably make it standard).
  20.
Hi Chris, Yeah - agreed with you on that - thing is, I don't think I'll ever need much more than what I already have (most of what I play is blues/soul in relatively small spaces) - I was more curious about how a driver that could get stressed by a 175watt amp could function as part of a 300watt set-up and also whether or not I'd done the right thing by going for the 210 extension. Once again, probably over thinking the whole thing by imagining using the rig in very unlikely high volume scenarios - the volume will probably never go past 12o'clock..! Cheers. w./
You've had a lot of expert answers and I don't want to undermine anything they've said, but I think there's a fairly simple-minded point that may help. You ask how "...a driver that could get stressed by a 175watt amp could function as part of a 300watt set-up"? Well, when you just use your 10" cab, it handles about 175 watts fairly happily. When you connect your other cab as well, then, at max, you're sort of getting about 150 watts from the 10" and another 150 from the other cab. So you get 300 watts in total, but you're not asking your 10" cab for more than it supplies when it's on its own. That's a rough explanation of how a 175 watt driver works in a 300 watt situation. But this simple-minded explanation assumes the load is balanced between the two cabs and it does sound like yours won't be quite that simple. But maybe understanding this simple scenario will help you get a handle on what your rig is doing.
  21. Ok, here's a simple example of combining sounds. Suppose you have two flutes, one playing the note A, and one playing the E above it (a perfect fifth). The first flute makes a soundwave like this: As time passes (from left to right), the air is alternately pushed (as the line goes up, like happens around the number 2 and around the number 8), and pulled (as the line goes down, between 4 and 6, and between 10 and 12), and then it just repeats. Meanwhile, the second flute is making a soundwave like this: So it's also alternately pushing and pulling the air but at slightly different times. Around time 2, the first flute is pushing, but the second isn't really doing anything much. Around time 9 both are pushing the air. So sometimes they're doing different things, sometimes the same thing, and sometimes completely opposite things (e.g. around time 5). Your ear just feels the combined effect, which is just the sum (as you said, although not the sum of "frequencies" but the sum of these pushes and pulls). When one is pushing and the other pulling, they obviously cancel, but when both are pushing (or both pulling) they combine. So your ears feel this: Similarly, if you want your leadspeaker to pretend to be two flutes, then you get it to move so as to push/pull the air like this. The miracle that leftybassman referred to is that from this "sum" wave, you can actually work out exactly what the constituents were. It's a bit of a miracle that it can be done even theoretically (using the magic of Fourier analysis) and a whole other miracle that our brains can do it without us even noticing (or having to do any calculus). And what's even more amazing is that there's nothing special about just having two notes. You can have a whole bunch of notes played together and still work out what they were, even if the combined wave looks something like this: (Which, if I've got the numbers right, should be a major triad).
  22. Darnit. I'd been looking for one of these, and finally succumbed and ordered one new just an hour or so before you posted. Supposed to be great pickups, so I doubt you'll have trouble finding a buyer.
  23.
...Would definitely try first before buying - have always fancied a fretless 4- or 5-string Alien with flatwounds mind.........
Well, anytime you're near South Wales, drop in and try my fretless 4-string Alien with TI flats. (The photo was taken with the stock strings before I put the TIs on).
  24. That would be a good question for the Warwick forum. (Which is another way of saying "Sorry, I'm afraid I don't have any idea" )
  25.
Indeedy. However i never mentioned buying. But if I send our dog on his own it comes back pre mauled.
Couldn't you train the dog to cut the nuts to shape, and then start up a little business? I mean, how hard can it be?
