New MXR Bass Overdrive and Bass Chorus Deluxe coming...
thumbo replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Effects
I'm impressed with the sound of the overdrive in that vid, it's a really nicely done demo. Here's more of Juan, this time with the chorus. -
If I was aiming to run a similar setup I'd want to use a compressor subtly at the beginning of my signal chain just to even out the clean bass sound so that what goes into the dirt pedals sounds a bit tighter, but plenty of people opt for doing this the other way round with putting the compressor at the end of the signal chain - it really depends what sounds 'best' though. In the past I've found with down-tuning that the lowest string sometimes sounds a bit lifeless (especially if the tension is noticeably lower than the other strings), and a compressor has helped to sort this out a bit. Your best bet is to try out a compression pedal with your setup once you've got all the stuff you need, you'll soon realise whether you want one in there or not. Also, you say you're looking for a grinding-clanky sound... Check out the Tronographic Rusty Box
Funny you should say that as i thought it was the worst sounding bass i'd owned. Seriously, i never clicked with it, not as stock, not as a PJ. A filed experiment on my part. Now i want it back lol.
Interesting, I wonder what this could be down to? I'm surprised at the difference in tone between my DJ4 and DJ5, they've both got that mid-rangey jazz quality about them but they're entirely different beasts. The DJ5 with the Aeros has a much mellower sound to it compared to the in-yer-face quality of the Lakland brand pickups.
I love that look. I think black on back looks much nicer than a white PG. This is my old one
I bet that sounded great with the P pickup! I'm a big fan of the P/J combo.

Thanks to Bass Doc, my DJ4 is now donning a black plate. Cheers Doc!
What do folk think? My Thumb NT had an 18v pre-amp, My Streamer is 9v. What's in the Thumb BO? Is any of this even significant?
I also have a Streamer Stage 1 (9v pre) and have no problems using the Compulator with it I can completely see why it didn't work well with an 18v pre-amp in your Thumb NT though!

Every month or so there seems to be a topic come up on the forum where someone is looking for recommendations for a relatively inexpensive 5 string bass and every time TRBs are highly recommended by those that have tried them, so I'm surprised no one's bitten your hand off for this bass yet! That's a great price for a lot of bass
Noticed that you play a Thumb Bass. Just a word of advice, be wary of compressors that don't have a control for the input signal. The signal from the Thumb bass is hot hot hot. I had a Demeter Compulator (great pedal) which couldn't handle it, the range on the wee input trim pot wasn't great enough. It's safer to get a compressor that can dial the input signal back to zero. Bear this in mind when choosing a compressor.
I'm currently using a Demeter Compulator and I've not experienced this problem with my Thumb Bolt-on, I did have to crank up the trip pot for active basses though. Were you using a neck through model with it? I'm not sure how that compares in output to the bolt on.

Yes you get what you pay for, but having owned quite a number of compression pedals myself I've noticed quite different characteristics from pedal to pedal so I think your best bet is to read reviews and start to narrow it down from there. This might help: http://www.ovnilab.com/faq.shtml there's also loads of reviews on that website.
I couldn't tell it from the Arse flavoured ale.
There's an arse flavoured ale? ...and you tried it?

I feel it's appropriate that we now start a topic specifically for pictures of kitchens taken with a fisheye lens.
Look no further than our very own Bass Doc for all your pickguard needs. Drop him a PM and he'll sort you out for a very, very reasonable cost. Cheaper than Jeanie's, I'll bet.
Will do! I've just noticed he left a comment on my wanted ad for a scratch plate.

Looks like Jeanies it is then I've taken the white scratch plate off it and I think a black plate is the way to go on this one for me. I said to my girlfriend "What do you reckon, white plate or imaginary black plate?" and she said "I don't like the white, but what about a pink sparkly one?".

If you can find a Lakland 5501 for under £500 you'd be on a winner I think, I'm not sure it's possible to find a better sounding low B than that for under £500. I'm also a big fan of the Yamaha TRB series, i've got one of the newer TRB 6 string basses and it's a great bass, the build quality of these basses is outstanding for how much they can be picked up for. Which Streamer 5 string did you have? Are there any qualities of that bass you'd hope to find in an alternative?

It's good to see someone in the UK stocking them

Meshuggah - Stengah is up there for me, it springs to mind when I think of heavy riffs anyway. I also agree that the riff at the end of Diamond Eyes is monsterously heavy.

Helluva good album! I've had it since it came out last November and I seem to find something new I like about it on every listen. Graphic Nature is a really stand out track to me, I really like Goon Squad too - that track reminds me of what I used to really like about Deftones back in the day.

Does anyone know where my best bet is to get a scratch plate from? - Is it jeannies?
Love it. Quite fancying a DJ 4 myself. To go with my Bob Glaub
I had a pang of GAS for a Bob Glaub this morning, they look great and judging by how much I like the feel of the DJ basses I think a Glaub would be right up my street.

Cheers guys I actually do like the white plate more than I thought I would, however, it's seeing this bass that made me realise I'd like to change it... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/33216-lakland-darryl-jones-4-blackblackmaple/

This ere' DJ4 arrived yesterday, it required a thorough setup when it arrived but now it's playing sweeet! My original intention was to get a DJ4 and then sell the DJ5, but they're totally different basses and I'm enjoying them for different reasons. The DJ4 has Lakland pickups and sounds punchier than the DJ5 which has Aeros, however the DJ5 has a J-Retro which is a mighty pre-amp. I've been veering away from active basses in the last couple of years but the J-Retro has been quite an eye opener, the variance in tones I can get from that bass is impressive. I need to get the white scratch plate off this bass though, not my cuppa tea! Does anyone have a DJ4 scratch plate ideally in black or just in a darker colour that they'd like to sell or swap?

I'd like to recommend a luthier who's been keeping my basses and guitars healthy since I can remember. I've seen some of major repair jobs he's done over the years and his work is very impressive, you can see some pictures of before/after headstock breaks etc on a Facebook page that he's recently started: Phil Dexter based in Plymouth tel: 07884061412 https://www.facebook.com/GuitarTech
