I personally find Fenders (guitar and bass) really boring. They are fantastic sounding instruments don't get me wrong but I find that there isn't any individuality to them unless you mod the living daylights out of them but then there isn't much fender left to them.
Says the guy playing a Nikki Sixx signature Epiphone... Back to the OP, personally I pick up a bass and play it. If it sounds good I buy it, if it sounds cr@p I put it back. I would never judge an entire brand based on the fact that I'd picked up a couple of them and they were/weren't great. That just silly.

Ok, so I was beaten to it.... a late announcement now!
When I started writing the piece I notched up a good 3000 words, needless to say, not all of my content could be used ha ha!
For those who bought the magazine and were clearly short-changed with an edited edition of your piece, do you reckon you could give us Basschatters the director's cut to read? -
You do if it's a unison passage.
Or if you're providing a specific groove, or playing a signature/recognised bass line (such as lines in 'We Will Rock You') or providing a specific dynamic included to support actors/film/other parts or because the lines are in unusual time changes (such as alternating sub-divisions or time-change-per-bar) or one of the other [insert number] reasons why you have to play what's written and can't just blag it.
+1 to this. Also, its now currently owned by Bradford University, so your degree certificate will be from them, not LCM.
This is another issue with LCM. They have had numerous issues with finding a university to verify their degrees. They've had a number in the recent past that included: Leeds Uni, Leeds Met Uni, Wakefield College, Leeds Trinity, Open University. All have decided that they do not want to be associated with the quality of education at LCM, and last year when a friend of mine graduated at LCM, there were some serious doubts about whether they would get their degrees accredited by a university as they were having issues with whoever was supposed to do it... Hence why they got Bradford on board this year.
Black is not a colour, it is the absence of colour.
I thought it was more that black just absorbs light instead of reflecting it, meaning it doesn't reflect the lightwaves needed to produce each of the specific colours. It's also in the CMYK colour model, so it must be officially a colour And on that note, we return to the OP... talk**** nonsense

Personally, I think people should be wary with Leeds College of Music as they are currently undergoing a number of major staff changes and it's probably not the same as when others studied here. I'm not putting anyone off going, just do your research as they have decided not to renew contracts with key members of staff. In my opinion, it does not send out the right messages when an institute decides to not continue it's associations with good quality instrumentalists and lecturers.
Show me a better bass player at the AGE OF 24, and I'll show you someone who hasn't written anything I'll listen to for the rest of my life.
Here's a better bass player (based purely on fact, and not outlandish opinion) In 1966 at the ripe age of 24, Sir Paul McCartney (and The Beatles) played their third and final live tour across the US, having recorded the following; Please Please Me (1963), With The Beatles (1963), A Hard Day's Night (1964), Beatles for Sale (1964), Help! (1965), Rubber Soul (1965) and began work on Revolver (1966). He had also achieved 11 Number Ones by that point and was the nucleus of The Beatles' success.
The guy was just brilliant, musically and technically. Sure, his playing was a little on the sloppy side but that just added character!
How can he be technically brilliant and sloppy? If this is possible, I know loads of sloppy bass players who will now have a selling point to help them get some gigs!
I've got my Lower Sixth practical tomorrow for my A Level grade, and bricking it! I'm playing Chromatic Fantasy, a Bach violin Sonata, and a piece from the Rockschool grade 8 syllabus (boke). I don't know, I just weird kinda inadequate doing auditions etc alongside pianists etc, anyone else feel the same? *runs away to practice*
If it makes you feel any better, I'm on the other side of the fence at the moment. I'm marking my A-level student's AS and A2 practical exams and I'm sure you'll be fine! Just remember to be confident and (unlike an graded exam [ABRSM/Rockshool etc]) your tutors are not there to be judgemental, they are there to try and give you the best marks they can based on your performance and want you to do well too, so relax and enjoy it!

What's a Fender?

That thread is nearly as pointless and stoopid as a thread that discusses a pointless and stoopid thread!

This is the same Kay that I was enquiring about recently! Interesting stuff...
Sure have :) Not going to say full details but a deal was struck that I was happy with.
Darren is a nice chap. I rang him to discuss prices when I bought my Overwater Aspiration Contemporary J 5 and he did me a great deal! Fantastic shop and brilliant service. Enjoy your Fender

If proper photos were taken, buyers would realise straight away that he's a total bullsh!tter!

I want to buy some black, clover-shaped tuners, but I can't seem to get the spec to match up with the existing tuners. The existing tuners are 13mm (1/2 inch) tuning post with a 17mm hole with a screw-in bushing (also 17mm). However, most replacement tuners are 13mm (1/2 inch) by 18mm (11/16") or 10mm by 14mm. Does this mean I would have to source a 17mm screw-in bushing and then buy the 13mm tuners separately? Or could I buy the tuners and the 18mm screw-in bushing that comes with them and make them fit with a bit of modding (i.e. sandpaper or something?) Help please! I'll be eternally grateful Thanks in advance.

Bass Merchant has been fantastic in all dealings I've had with them. Wanted to buy a bass (Overwater Aspiration Contemporary J 5) from them but I had found it cheaper online. As I wanted to buy from a reputable bass specialist, I talked it through with Darren and he was more than happy to do a price match so that I could keep my custom with them. I've also bought some Aguilar gear through them as they are a UK dealer and it has been fantastic. Could not fault them and think they set a fantastic example to other (bass) retailers.

No, but I always try to remember two pieces of advice I was told about performance, 1) People listen with their eyes first. 2) Because we are predators and our eyes are on the front of head, you appear to be moving more if you move sideways rather than front to back... This is because our eyes auto-focus to perceive depth, but we have to physically move our eyes for objects moving sideways

Just had an email through from Overwater that I thought people might find interesting... "Although standard spec' Aspiration Series basses will be available exclusively through our UK dealer network, we are beginning to prepare a few 'Limited Edition' Aspiration basses for those looking for something a little bit special. Assembled and finished in the UK in custom colours and individually signed and numbered by Chris May. Give us a call to for further information." Exciting!

Total crap in my opinion. You don't need a 120kg, 8x12" cab to get a good sound. As for the American's (or anyone) liking things to be BIG... Classic case of over-compensating for the old fella down stairs IMO!
I also strongly disagree with just tuning to other instruments. Intonation is likely to be cack up the neck and probably won't help vocals and vocal harmonies.
I strongly agree with this thread... "Going out of tune in your bag? How do you prevent it?" This might as well be called "Instrument going out of tune? How do you prevent it?" because the answer is the same... You tune it regularly!

If You Could Have 1 Hour With Any Living Bass Player.....?
Really??? I don't believe I've ever seen a better use for the 'comfort body contour' on a Jazz style bass than this - It's what Leo would have wanted.
It just reminds me of the middle-aged man boob resting on the contour everytime I see it. ARGGGGH! (I think it must be that there's not enough of *the above* use of the contour to erase it from my brain!)
