If You Could Have 1 Hour With Any Living Bass Player.....?
skej21 replied to merello's topic in General Discussion

Great player, but the one thing that puts me off MASSIVELY about her is the way she wears her bass. The height/position would be fine if it didn't remind me of the more frequent sight of middle-aged male bass players who rest their moob on their bass, like a bass bra! *cringes* -
I'm not 100% sure about this but i heard that there is a limit whereby cost below that limit has no VAT / import charge. Might be worthwhile checking the customs website for possible details. ? Can the seller add that its a gift and put value at less i.e. £50 etc ? Just a thought. Might be illegal and get slated for this comment ? Dave
I imagine it is illegal to not declare the true value. The other issue is that the seller is a company, not an individual, so I doubt they would consider that as an option. Think I'm just going to take the chance and go for it!
I think an hour is rather optimistic...
Yeah, if she was pulling that face the whole time it would take you an hour just to talk her into it! -
Five tuners together will be no bigger than an average lunchbox, still a small package by my reasoning. Personally, I'd go for it. Besides, even if you get stung, it's 25% of the total added on, how does that compare with (the absurdly expensive) UK arm of Allparts?
With the 25% extra, it would end up being about £20 more than if I'd ordered from Allparts.
-
+ 1 for the Hartke... Just buy secondhand to get a good deal, and you'll be more than well-equipped (and happy!)
Take the chance. If you use a national mail carrier rather than a dedicated courier (Fedex etc) you've a good chance of getting away with it on relatively inexpensive and small items.
That's what I was thinking. However, the company I found sends the items by UKmail and I'm unsure of whether they would get through with the courier. In addition, I'd be ordering five tuners. So I either order them all at the same time for combined shipping ($15 in total) and then have a large package going through OR order them one at a time to have small packages coming through, and pay $15 per item... the latter would then push the total cost to about £35 higher than allparts if that was the case. Hmmm, dilemma. Why is there nowhere in the UK that does them?!

Pino Palladino, without a SHADOW of a doubt! -
Must admit, I don`t know if he was using the Jazz pickup though - just that the basswood bass sounded far middier, and less bassy than the alder one.
That may be the case, but it's almost impossible to say that it was 'middier' (even a word?) because of the wood it's made from. It could be strings, amp, preamp, effects, player's technique (or lack of) etc etc etc etc like Doddy has mentioned. Much more likely to be one of those things than the kind of wood hidden under paint and lacquer.
-
I keep my nails short for finger-style playing. If I want a plectrum sound/attack (very rarely because clanky sounds are bloody awful IMO), I go a bit crazy and use a plectrum!
-
Allparts
Priced it up at Allparts. £25 more than if I got them from the US. However, would be risking the Customs/VAT charges if getting them from the US. Hmmm. Decisions.
-
Does anyone know a decent place (in the UK) to buy bass hardware? In particular, I'm looking for some black, clover key, 1/2" tuners... Preferably Hipshot HB6C. I've found a few places in the US to get them from, but I was wondering if there's anywhere easier/cheaper in the UK that people know of? [Sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong place!]
I've played both the Overwater classic J and the Squier classic vibe Jazz and there's next to nothing in it.
I don't think that was the argument... the point was that an Overwater classic J is cheaper than buying the "overpriced" Matt Freeman Signature model Squier specifically... The point being that the signature model does not justify the extra cost, and potential buyers have plenty of other reasonably priced alternatives (i.e. the CV Jazz or Precision... or the Overwater Classic J) that are similar in quality!
Be careful, if you're leaving your gear somewhere you know isn't secure, your insurance might (rightly IMO) kick up a fuss if something happens and it's shown that it wasn't locked away. I'm with the MU, still not sorted out my insurance but that's the best way to go IMO, it's worth the money for advice etc as well as insurance.
+ 1 This is why I went with Endsleigh... my gear is covered even if it gets stolen from the back of an open, unattended vehicle! All for £45 a year! Can't go wrong
£399 for the Overwater (Tanglewood) Classic J.. Or this overpriced Squier ?
+ 1 Overwater Aspiration Series Classic J would win for me... EVERYTIME!
-
I think you mean an Overwater Aspiration Contemporary J 5? Glad you like it, I also highly recommend them. Fantastic quality bass! Had numerous comments about it's looks and sound too!
-
Only advice I have is buy one. Whichever one you liked the playability/sound of best, get it. Put some decent flats on it, and you'll probably never look back. I have a MIM 50s Precision and with flats, it just has a simple, clear and commanding sound that I can't get from any of my other basses. So yeah, buy one! Worst comes to worst, you find you're not REALLY keen so you sell it on here (advertising to a huge amount of Precision lovers!) It would be gone in 10 minutes

If it helps, I priced up a flightcase for a bass cab a few weeks ago for a similar situation. Burritobass suggested these guys (Hi-Spec Flightcases) and they were quite a lot cheaper than FCW and include VAT and delivery in their quotes. You have to email for prices, but they were pretty good with me. Also, if you let them know you need it be a certain date, they'd let you know if it was possible or not. Hope it helps!
And ?????
Sweet FA.
-
I'm only doing it as a "it does/doesn't work" test... don't actually care whether it works or not TBH. Had a few hours to kill while I watch the footy and before going out to gig tonight. I'll let you all know how it goes (or doesn't go)
Forget Coke/wee and all the rest.
Cokewee... why did nobody think of this earlier?! I'm off to drink 6 litres of Coke and bottle up the resultant corrosive!
I'm being serious here, but I seem to remember being told that it has to be Coca Cola......
So only full on branded Coca-Cola? The red one, with the sugar in?
-
Great advert for people buying an extra cab This story reminds me of the video intro to 'Black and White' by Michael Jackson... Blow that b@stard through the roof, Wayne!!
Im sure diet coke is even worse, And of course i would never waste real Coke on this... this is what Tesco own brand Cola was made for right?
Correct. I'm using Co-op's own brand Diet Cola. Put the neck plate in at 1pm. Still in there now and has not made any noticeable change. Maybe my Co-op cola is too high-brow. Maybe some Netto cola would have been a better option?
