Going to try the diet cola thing today on an old neckplate and see how it goes!
-
I totally don't get this road-worn thing. I mean really, you get addicted to buying the same thing over and over again (and lots of GAS as a side effect), then you want to ruin the beautiful liquid inside to burn off the chrome on bass parts! What a waste of perfectly good Coca Cola!
Do basses improve with age?
Yes and No. If you buy a bass that you keep for an extended period of time (for example, my first bass I've had for about 12 years) I do believe that your bass evolves with you. The bass does change as a result of wear and I think on a personal and specific/individual level, you evolve and get comfortable with the 'feel' of that specific instrument to you, meaning that (to you) it's improved as your playing is more natural and better on a instrument you're comfortable with. If I pick up my first bass I know it back-to-front as soon as I pick it up, despite the fact that it's nothing like it was when I first got it 12 years ago. The bass has evolved WITH ME (as I've improved), which I believe is the difference. Having a bass that matured with someone else is just as alien to me when I pick it up as a brand new bass, so I don't see the hype in buying a vintage bass.
A 4 string. If they're only a tiny bit as good as my 6 then they'll be amazing.
I'm sure you'll be more than happy with it! You'll also have the luxury of the trans black OR trans blue, a choice you don't get with the J 5!
I'm definitely getting one, it'll have to be a Contemporary though
4 or 5 string?

I dropped you a PM about these basses greyparrot. Hope it's useful and helps you in making a decision about buying one of these. Great instruments!
Americans and geography, a dangerous combination.
Cue cringeworthy youtube clip of an American explaining why it's a dangerous combo. -
Dunno if this is useful or not? Program displays a two bar rhythm and you tap it out on the space bar (if you find one you can't do, there's a 'listen to' button ). It's pretty basic stuff, but thought you might find it useful for practicing reading rhythms whilst on the computer/basschat http://www.emusictheory.com/practice/rhythmPerf.html
the old K162's are dogs to play apparently, it's not the quality of them that fetched those prices it's cos anything with that K logo is just cool at the moment how much you after skej21?
Not after anything. It belongs to a mate and I'm just doing a bit of research. He was just making sure he wasnt holding an uninsured expensive instrument lol. Sounds good to me though. Had a play and it plays alright. I wouldn't buy it, that's for sure lol. Thanks for all the replies guys!

Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
Me too but that was on the nuttier side. The Unthanks were great.
Agreed, on both counts. That guy with the loop pedal was bloody awful too. What the hell has happened to this show?! Are they expecting us to be impressed by a bloke looping a recording of him making spitting noises, and then layering loops of him FAILING to sing a simple 3rd in tune over the top? P!SS OFF, JOOLS! P!SS OFF! -
played that bass today at BM, great, waiting for the 5 string.
These basses are truly fantastic. For the price, you just cannot go wrong. Played 5 function gigs and 2 reading gigs since buying mine. It's the easiest few gigs I've had in a long time (reading is so much easier on a 5!) and the playability of the bass is outstanding. Well-built, comfortable and lightweight (whilst being substantial enough to feel like you've got hold of a bass!) Also, nearly everyone who's seen it has commented on how nice it is. 3 guitarists from different gigs commented on how smooth it was, and I feel it still has a subtle jazz growl. People also think it's a stunning instrument, particularly the inlays. My students have spent most of their lessons staring at it on the wall too lol. I've finished the rant. Just go and buy one of the aspiration series basses. Totally worth it.
Cheers dude - now I know!
No bother mate. Try one, buy one. You'll not regret it.

Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?

PJ Harvey on Jools tonight. Always been a huge fan. Needless to say I will have uncontrollable rage if Jools plays his honky-tonk sh!t and ruins it. -
I saw that too! Wasn't a GT i don't think, as the top was two part/two woods, could have been a full wack custom! Its looked alot like a GT-7 though so i could be wrong!
+ 1 for spying the bass in Derren Brown's show. I'd imagine it was a full on custom job, considering the amount of money they were scamming out of people. Well paid gig I would have thought. Where do I sign up?
I have a KJB-1B bass by kay Not bad basses. They made electric basses around the 1960's (i think they were made by teisco) and were primarily an upright bass manufacturer.
Nice! I should have also said, the K-2B model my friend appears to have a body shape similar to an SG. Reckon it's worth much, or just a good back-up bass?
Has anybody confirmed if these are 34" or 35" scale yet - listings and specs seem to disagree?
Measured my Contemporary J 5 and it's 34" scale.

I have a friend who asked me to look into a bass he was given, and i thought that I'd probably find out more by asking here than digging myself. Anyone know anything about Kay bass guitars? Model is sunburst Kay K-2B. Pretty much all I know as he only showed me a picture and a model number. Could get the serial if needs be. Any/all information and (inevitable) expertise would be greatly appreciated. Tar in advance folks!
Yeah, my reading should be fine (Gareth may dispute this), and we'll have 1 or maybe two band rehearsals, and a dress rehearsal before the two nights, it should be grand
If your reading is fine, then just chill out and do a bit of casual reading practice until you get the pad. Then (most importantly) enjoy doing the show! P.s. If you need any practice resources 'relevant' to musicals (), just PM me and I'll pass on the stuff I've got
I've not done High School Musical, but I've done plenty of other shows. As long as you've got your reading together and you can follow the conductor you should be alright.
Big + 1 As long as you've got your reading together all should be fine. If not, you want to pray that someone on here has a useful 'resource' that they can pass on to you. As for the intensive research mentioned above. That's not going to help you much if you can't read to be honest. A few listens to get feel etc might be useful, but don't learn them all before turning up and then realise everything you've learnt is wrong. It'll confuse the sh!t out of you (and you're a bassist, not the MD... let him do all the hard work like structuring etc!) Anyway, let us all know how it goes! Break a leg.
Theres better on the market which have followed from what Fender started.
Totally agree with this, but the Ibanez in question is not one of them. The only way this bass could be worth anything near the £2k asking price, is if it came with a vial of Victor Wooten's man jam. Even then, it would still be targeted at a VERY niche market

Come on guys, I don't see the problem, 'it will only add value.'
-
Of course I'd do it. At the end of the day, it takes just as much (on a professional level, not a technical level) to work with Bieber as it would with anyone else, so what's the difference? That a couple of bassists think you're a 'sell-out'? Who cares. 'Sell-out' is just the muso way of saying 'I'm jealous that *name* is getting paid to play huge gigs while I'm stuck in my day job with my only my musical snobbery/pseudo-principles for company.'

Start a Bass revolution. I'd need a team though. One person to engineer a micro amp that was small/light enough to carry on your back but powerful enough to disturb the peace (and cause serious/deadly hearing injuries) and then a number of people with extended range basses. 6 strings or above an absolute must. Then blow the sh!t out of anyone/everyone who got in the way, with the low notes! Bring it on!! -
Mr Conklin had no choice in his name [...] What you're really saying is that he should change his name. Which would be confusing and a bit silly.
I think you've missed the point. You're right in saying that Conklin didn't have a choice in his name (obviously), but he did have a choice in naming his brand of instruments. I think Bassassin was trying to say that you don't HAVE to use your surname as the brand name and that maybe constructing a name to try and create a stronger brand identity would have been a better idea. Much like Chris May creating Overwater.
