I have just strung my Status electro EADGC just to see how i get on reading in a big band without having to fly up the neck. As i feel a high string is more useful than a low B Just wondered if many of you have mixed 5 string bass set ups and how you cope, I will still be using my low B set up on my Shuker and Mbass for function band work.

Don't go there Tim, I nearly got that anal I did get the gear out of the garage a to warm up and dry out prior to new year, checked any major items that evaded the PAT testing, also robbed the Christmas tree extension cable and had to switch off Bambi on the porch roof to be able to do the New year gig.

I think Tut and Grandad are right, it is best to go out on a high. I have seen bands fizzle out after loosing the drive and passion to be the best. I never wanted to be that band, just getting the band together because the phone still rings on occasions. Going through the motions making silly mistakes and not being tight and slick as you used to be. We were once the new kids on the block giving the old established bands a run for their money, because we put the work in. Now I know we are the old farts putting out the scratch band,

Thinking a band is more important than the disco !! who is top billing when it comes to room on stage or who ends up in corner of the room. Are the rules still It's who gets the gear out of the van first. BTW your photo shows you are taking up far too much of the dance floor

you mentioned PAT tested gear but non PAT tested lights on a mic stand is a no no

I have ended up with 3 Amps Mark Bass LMK GK mb fusion 500 SWR sm - 500 played through one or two Acme low B 4 ohm cabs, the reason for buying the stereo SWR for bigger gigs Cabs are keepers but don't know which small amp should go

Yep - agree with your sentiment Said to the wife on the way home from our new years gig, where did the 17 years go since the millennium gig we did? We are a 4 piece bass guitar and drums + wife singing - I own PA and lights, Insurance, PAT testing, web site etc and operate the PA from stage not ideal. I am getting together with a few old friends soon and doing some Shads and RnR stuff - just me and the bass

Make the jump from 4 to 5 or just keep switching?
deepbass5 replied to Deedee's topic in Bass Guitars
I Echo Chris b's comments, There is a world of difference between a good V and a budget production 4 model with an extra sting. Like Chris I have stuck with 5 string and only played the five for the first year to give it a fair chance, never to return. -

Has anyone gone from lightweight back to heavy?
deepbass5 replied to AndyTravis's topic in Amps and Cabs
I guess so - recent purchase 3 months ago SWR SM-500 to power my two Acme 4ohm cabs. Love the sound of the amp, warm, deep the Aural Enhancer a real bonus on these amps. I own a Mark bass and a GK mb500 but loving the harmonic content and weight of attack from this. So lugging it out of choice. -
Not long bought an SWR SM500 from Phsycocandy otherwise would be very interested, but may well get in touch in the new year to AB it against the SWR is anyone able to comment on how the R 400 compares to the three valve preAmp in the GK MB 500fusion

Also interested to try the R-400 if there is one in Berkshire / Thamesvalley

Interesting posts - I started with two finger technique self taught. First and second finger. Bought two instructional videos some years back 1980's Jerry Jermmott advocated two fingers because he liked their different sound due to difference in length and pad hardness so produce an uneven walk do-da-do-da-do-da Then got Randy Jacksons video and he advocated using just the index finger so everything sounds even with the same attack. After thirty five years I still use both 1st & 2nd alternately, but find myself using just index a lot more. I also use third finger for softer attack and also 1 & 3. I have instruction books that say you should lead with the second finger first so its about what the song requires but also how you have applied your time in the shed. What works for you

Thanks for posting that Pete - brill I am all for equal opportunities for women as long as it doesn't affect me - and as I can't sing I doubt if i would have got the gig anyway -
I have john's EQ in all my basses with pull passive on two and all fine. without digging out the install instructions I thought there was a balance pot inside to adjust to set this up the same, but as stated above out of phase will cause a problem but usually identified by panning the pups and listening for volume drop when sweeping front to back through the centre position

Also in support of the MXR - sounds really good and pleased to have retired my Boss flanger and Boss chorus as this does both very well in one unit. IMO many bass players over use effects, (too wet) and muddy the sound, ideally we should if possible keep these just in the upper freq in the harmonics e.g. bi amping or if you have stereo keep one side clean for bass, our job is the bass with occasional colour - but subtle unless soloing.

Set 1 MBass Set2 Shuker just to give each a blast, occasionally the Status may get a set if 60's is a key part of the set

5 strings - 35" scale - the downside...
deepbass5 replied to vmaxblues's topic in General Discussion
I went through a period of this earlier this year, could be action and string tension, but i bet it is something else - how much computer use have you had recently - unsupported mouse work etc. I realised it was this that caused me a problem then everything else inc (bass playing) is affected and aggravates the condition. Recheck posture in all areas of home and work and play. rest if possible. It will sort itself. This may well be in the back and shoulder transferred to the elbow. So basically i think ambient is prob on the right track for you. -
I play in two big bands now and would advise you to read regular, as it will come easier but sounds as though you may be. My main problem was knowing the bast place to start the piece - where to put my left hand. I had lessons and took along the most troublesome numbers. This was because i tended to leap about the neck and make mistakes always returning below the fifth fret for comfort. Then i realised if i position my hand as if to play the scale of the key i was in most of the notes were falling under my fingers, sounds obvious but it wasn't at the time. so Db start with index finger on Db was the best bet. I play five strings, so no real excuse it has made me play and grow more confident in the middle of the neck.

Bought an SWR SM-500 mint as described, have now gigged several times. Excellent condition and sound, and very well packed when it arrived. very pleased
