1. Ed is great I started on bass with Mel Bay which maybe who publishes Ed's books anyway. These are like the tune a day books brass players have, starts simple you know 'home on the range' and 'twinkle little star' etc. The secret is start slow it is a life long journey I started at 9 that's 50 years ago and just got through another hurdle and off running again. and it goes like that you hit a wall and think I'm never gonna do this and you apply yourself, lots of shedding and bang you are through and then race up to the next brick wall. Here is my last mountain https://youtu.be/xvxCMrdROYE 240 bpm and a bass/vocal solo good luck
2. The Shires - love their stuff on the radio but the gig suffered from the usual kick drum boom, I also believe a lot of the gig was backing track and the bass and lead guitarist were miming. Just weird sound. There was probably only two numbers where they I could say they were producing all the parts heard. Anyone else seen them.
3. This is basically how we hear, which is why we often dial in a to even things out, and need bigger amps than guitarists
4. BC Rich Eagle bass was another fave in late 70's, but bet those recordings were the Ray into the desk
5. Thanks guys - just want say you are not just getting a great little amp, but the original tubes worth £30. Three British NOS ECC83 CV492 valves that are inside would set you back $100 each Of course no one else in the band will notice the difference B m
6. It isn't about what we like, The punters love it so if the singer is up to the task it is a great song to learn. It also shows what a good musician Duff is Great inventive supporting counter melodies driving the song to where it needs to go on every twist and turn. I think it is a classic bass line and every bit as good as the guitar part above.
7. Keeping to evaluate with new cab until after Christmas I bought this as a back up to my Mark Bass but have ended up using it extensively on my Jazz gigs and rehearsals. As soon as I got this i acquired three NOS Brimar ECC83 from a radio ham friend and A -B'd this with the original JJ ECC83 All subjective i know but thought they were warmer so kept them in. The three original valves will be supplied with this as spares. This also comes with a small laptop bag just the right size to hold it tight and take the leads. A great little amp, I have also used this as a valve pre-amp, a good trick to breath new life into your other amps. I have pedal and box & leads etc. Pick up preferred. Thames Valley
8. As above using this at the moment but still available for sale if the right bass comes along Trade £1800 ball park or £1600 sale only
9. Hi Japaxe I have been here or there for a while now, but as Bilbo says practice is the key to everything and it will come, I had a real hang up of not knowing the best place to start on the neck, to avoid this problem. I even took lessons from a pro to sort me out, this was good as it showed me there is no wrong place but a best place. So on those numbers you are referring I would suggest starting in the 5,6,7th position with your middle finger left hand on the route of the scale the piece its written in e.g. Db Then without looking at the neck you suddenly find all the written notes are falling under those fingers just as you would play the scale in that key. I am 13 years into this and now play in two big bands but you still find some numbers that freak you but thats because some arrangers are not bass players good luck
10. Keep it as is - you may just pull unless you do sing along gigs at old folks homes on Tuesday afternoons
11. Just ditto - above , loved his feel, a player that stuck in my head because he made you seek him out to find out who that was playing on a particular track.
12. Well all fitted, and I can confirm as per Fretmeister, very nice. As you can see the Labella strings do actually fit the Status machine heads perfectly without the expense of upgrading to Hipshot's but this will allow the use of other strings in future, they feel very solid quite a bit of play in the old ones. The Labella are higher tension than the Status due to the size so a tweak on the neck was also required to keep the relief the same. mine are the 60,70,94,115,135
13. Part of me agrees, I have two plug and play amps with enough flexibility most of the time -MB and GK but still would like an amp with one good para mid to Eq the odd bad room, leaving my bass pre free for variations required song by song
14. Sounds good on the clip, but a little late getting to the party I've just been browsing Bassdirect's second hand amp section, and that's where all the good amps are. What is everbody thinking? parametric mids you need one at least preferably two if they are on your amp, when you need um you can rather than
15. The pics of my status nut with new yew guide Strings at present are Status - B130,E105,A85 then GHS - D70, G50.
16. Re feed back - whole new discussion, room , loud back line where she is forced to stand, monitor/PA placement. Feedback destroyers are not the answer here sort the physical problems causing it. I have been down that route. Note Radio mic = no feedback in my book. must be something to do with phasing, So if she ends up out front of the main PA that option may do it. But could just turn everybody else down.
17. Very Interesting Fretmeister and Bassbus I have a Status electro 5 string and have been using a mixture of status black nylons B,E,A and GHS black nylon on the D &G GHS are higher tension more twangy not as nice tone as status but i needed the tension on the lighter strings - having owned a Rob Allen I love the Labella black nylons and intend to get a set, but as the status nut and machine heads will not take the larger diameter strings (GHS) or Labella i have cut it to get them in. So about 4 months ago made a new nut from Yew as it is just a guide on the Status with a zero fret. I am planning a trip up to Bass direct to buy some Hipshot tuners as they have wider jaw and are used on Rob Allen's and a set of Labella next week. will post a photo at the weekend of the bass nut. keep ya posted when all up graded.
18. my Mrs loves the extra power and bass response and proximity effect on her Beta 58 over the standard SM58 unit the Radio Beta 58 is good but they all loose something when the battery is on its say out. we have A - B'd this several times so always go for cable if stage allows.
19. Very cool but you could be sloppy 4ths if ya not quick https://youtu.be/ZJL4UGSbeFg
20. Just thought someone should say happy birthday to Bruce, I know there is lots of love for him on here. Don't time fly " that's entertainment" https://youtu.be/ubxYYzYNP84
21. A couple of things since my last offering, Smaller cheaper practice size amps have all their volume in those mid to upper mids when you start to run out of steam, where our ears are most efficient almost like a guitar amp, so you may need to pick up a descent gig-able size combo ASAP and that may help with getting the sound you want, as far as flats I would steer you to half rounds first as these will be better suited to most music and cut down on hand noise as well and easier to slap when required. all the best
