1. We change each set, usually start in DJ's then to different coloured shirts, or all black. I think it is important to look like a band even if you don't sound like you're together
2. Is the main problem the venue hire cost or profit being sought by the Magazine chain. It was worth the visit last year just to meet you Bluejay.
3. I use three of these about £235 but + is you can use them as a PA and for rehearsals they are 12 " and 350 W
4. No Change on the Bass front still as listed below. but I have for the first time been actively trying different strings on different basses, and I believe now that a particular bass and neck construction calls for a particular string tension to work in harmony with, pickup and string material SS or nickle may also play a part here. My M Bass is totaly transformed with Status half wounds. My Shuker loves GHS nickles. So I have learned, its what your bass likes not what you think you like.
5. I don't feel enough major bass brands have signed up to drag me there this year. So last minute yes or no for me. If they can't be bothered why should I.

From your example if you had a 1 x 12 cab with an Xmax of 1mm and you had a 4 x 12 cab with an xmax of 1mm on each cone, would it be the same. Yes your limitation are the same before distorting, but you would only need to drive the 4 x 12 cab 25% as hard to get the same displacement. so hopefully you will not distort it I am always worried reading about the love for the latest 1 x 12 cab and that people reading the reviews are thinking a particular 1 x12 will cover every need. Horses for courses. I have owned powerfull 4 x12 cabs in the past when i played larger venues but I dont need those sound pressure levels now. e.g. I also use an EA m-line with with a 500watt amp, but know its limitations its just for jazz so this 200 watt speaker with a small xmax will probably not see 30 < 50 watts on my gigs. I know i could damage it on a rock gig with that amp so I would take my 700watt 2 x12 and doubt if i put more than 200 watts through it.
7. He's avin a laugh Eric's been on the Pino
8. Don't feel too sorry for them Tim, As someone who started out on Trombone in function bands, brass sections only play stabs most of the time they spend the majority of the gig looking at the women. My main hurdle swapping to bass was I had to play every note start to finish. It was bl***dy hard work relentless concentration. No excuse if the argument here is we should learn it off pat then brass sections have no excuse.
9. Like many here, I love nothing more than to see how far one can push a thread as soon as different opinions start to emerge, but all very tongue in cheek. Just good to have a laugh together. I Hope no one ever takes my comments seriously. If I have upset anybody - my drummer will see you outside
10. Would I be perceived as a more successful musician if am seen with a £120 RAT stand as opposed to my poorer cousin who spends just £30 on a metal stand. Only reading musicians need reply
11. These Irish pub bands have all the best beer and gadgets
12. If you don't use music stands where are people going to put that lost ear ring, or the note telling you that the owner of the blue Ford has left the lights on, post Requests and notes for when the buffet is ready. A music stand is the perfect solution to stop the old practice of the organiser wanting to hold a conversation with the person singing or insisting on handing things to those that are playing an instrument.
13. Just wondered if it comes with a Hamster in there with dark glasses p.s. Your timing is dreadful, don't you know its Christmas next week and the wifes birthday two weeks after that.
14. I had to adjust the nut on my Status in the same way but that is the beauty of basses with a zero frets as you aren't going to mess with your bass action. so take care as you do not need depth. If you go deeper you could mess up your open notes so take care just to widen the shoulders of each slot. Also +1 for Status black nylon but they are faily low tension so would recomend the heavier gauge.
15. i've been there - Trombone in brass bands on treble then I had lessons from a salvation army guy who said i need to read bass clef. so learnt to do that a fresh not transposing I think that is the key, Tenor clef was ok the usual trick knock off 2 flats and play naturals sharp I think that was it. Then there was Alto clef lets not go there. So my Trombone playing got me thinking in different camps and with bass it was applying one of those to a new instrument. So as said above just keep doing everything in bass clef for as many hours as time allows.
16. Found this while looking for something else, as you do. thought you guys may be interested http://youtu.be/15YyGPSF4Vs
17.
Why are function bands let off the hook?
Because we read music the punters think we are professionals and feel they have got real value for money and were lucky to find us
18. JTUK is about right on his pricing - but a difficult situation. There is a thread running at present about a band split and who owns and owes what to who. I have been there and for the last twenty odd years have owned everything. PA monitors Lights etc. You may be some way off from this but I feel that is where you need to be, to make gigs pay. If you are close to the guitarist and feel any future line up would be you two + xx then maybe split the cost invest in Bass bins next to go with the 12" tops for big venues. This was my approach, basically a PA or PA's to suit venue size Restaurant to civic hall. Next prob is do you need or intend to have someone mixing - I do that as well as play bass. Not ideal at all, but we seem to be very professional about volume and are not trying to be Stadium prog rock stars in a pub environment. good luck
19. There a few out but they are not in vogue at present. I would like to see someone produce a bass amp with a flexible split amp arrangement. I Think it was Carvin who did a PA power amp that could be bridged or split basically four amps in one. So for bass you could bridge two for your bottom end and have stereo bi amped top. So you keep your bottom end clean with lots of power where you need it and introduce your stereo effects across the two high end amps. Peavey also used to make a PA system that worked on this principle Triflex. I did use a Carvin probass 500 which had two 250w amps you could use in stereo or bi-amp. check out the latest carvins as they still have this facility BX1600. some SWR & Trace elliot etc. Before you go stereo make sure the guitarist wants a bass cab his side of the drummer
20. I play in both reading big bands and covers/functions band - Big band jazz you read that’s a given but my wife who also sings in that band will not sing from a stand as she is fronting the gig and it looks awful. In our functions band after 25 years I still read 25% of the numbers, due to how many we have covered over time. But I agree with you all that it looks bad, I have in the past been down to just a handful of numbers and been known to even move from side to side but when you are learning new ones each week those you don't play for 6 months drop off the other end. If we did the same two 45 min sets every night I would learn them off, but we do 3 hours on average from over 200 numbers.
21. Here he is explaining him earning double buble http://youtu.be/XBXUP5GqYJs?list=PL98k7D_8Rf9az6YZXwnaqhbd_VlFGlFaX
22. Just stumbled on this and thought it worth sharing - sort of retro techno with bass of course http://youtu.be/u44NKcZNxfk
23. Just spent over an hour and a half going through this thread, many thanks to all, love flemenco. thought the Metalica clip was great. My contribution would be Miami sound machine Live in Miami when Jorge Casas swapped his Tune 5 string for a spanish guitar, go from 33 min if you don't have time but carry on to 46 to catch him in full bass swing but also worth seeing from 26 min, oh just watch the lot Jorge is great though every number shows how a bass should be mixed in a stadium. plenty of Spanish rythmes to get ya teeth into. here is the whole concert - the Spanish have a lot to answer for
24. ahhh !! Herbie - he used to drive that damn Bettle number 53 round like an idiot quite good on bass too and the Tuba, I was trying to find tuba smarties clip when he filled it with bubbles and played this number. But the one they nicked off the German geezer wasn't bad either -clip below http://youtu.be/QgbgUrp1a70
25. Oh and Nordy with a few nice basses and a basket full of pups
