If you don't use music stands where are people going to put that lost ear ring, or the note telling you that the owner of the blue Ford has left the lights on, post Requests and notes for when the buffet is ready. A music stand is the perfect solution to stop the old practice of the organiser wanting to hold a conversation with the person singing or insisting on handing things to those that are playing an instrument.

I had to adjust the nut on my Status in the same way but that is the beauty of basses with a zero frets as you aren't going to mess with your bass action. so take care as you do not need depth. If you go deeper you could mess up your open notes so take care just to widen the shoulders of each slot. Also +1 for Status black nylon but they are faily low tension so would recomend the heavier gauge.

i've been there - Trombone in brass bands on treble then I had lessons from a salvation army guy who said i need to read bass clef. so learnt to do that a fresh not transposing I think that is the key, Tenor clef was ok the usual trick knock off 2 flats and play naturals sharp I think that was it. Then there was Alto clef lets not go there. So my Trombone playing got me thinking in different camps and with bass it was applying one of those to a new instrument. So as said above just keep doing everything in bass clef for as many hours as time allows.

JTUK is about right on his pricing - but a difficult situation. There is a thread running at present about a band split and who owns and owes what to who. I have been there and for the last twenty odd years have owned everything. PA monitors Lights etc. You may be some way off from this but I feel that is where you need to be, to make gigs pay. If you are close to the guitarist and feel any future line up would be you two + xx then maybe split the cost invest in Bass bins next to go with the 12" tops for big venues. This was my approach, basically a PA or PA's to suit venue size Restaurant to civic hall. Next prob is do you need or intend to have someone mixing - I do that as well as play bass. Not ideal at all, but we seem to be very professional about volume and are not trying to be Stadium prog rock stars in a pub environment. good luck

There a few out but they are not in vogue at present. I would like to see someone produce a bass amp with a flexible split amp arrangement. I Think it was Carvin who did a PA power amp that could be bridged or split basically four amps in one. So for bass you could bridge two for your bottom end and have stereo bi amped top. So you keep your bottom end clean with lots of power where you need it and introduce your stereo effects across the two high end amps. Peavey also used to make a PA system that worked on this principle [b]Triflex.[/b] I did use a Carvin probass 500 which had two 250w amps you could use in stereo or bi-amp. check out the latest carvins as they still have this facility BX1600. some SWR & Trace elliot etc. Before you go stereo make sure the guitarist wants a bass cab his side of the drummer

I play in both reading big bands and covers/functions band - Big band jazz you read that’s a given but my wife who also sings in that band will not sing from a stand as she is fronting the gig and it looks awful. In our functions band after 25 years I still read 25% of the numbers, due to how many we have covered over time. But I agree with you all that it looks bad, I have in the past been down to just a handful of numbers and been known to even move from side to side but when you are learning new ones each week those you don't play for 6 months drop off the other end. If we did the same two 45 min sets every night I would learn them off, but we do 3 hours on average from over 200 numbers.

Musky - just what i was thinking.

One is a mid scoop arround 300 Hz but lifts bass and treble either side progresively as you go higher. keep the four main knobs at 12 and just use this to get an idea what it can do. the other is for high cut shelving so you can get a vintage on flats sound

I could never pinpoint why i liked his music but he seemed to have a knack of not getting in the way of it, if that makes sence just very easy listening, and you always want to return to it again and again.

Always loved Boz Scaggs and don't feel his contribution to popular music in the 70's was fully recognised, he was a musicians musician and worth checking out his back catalogue. As Gary stated I have also just tried the Status half wounds they are very good quality and £20 cheaper than the Roto ground wounds which are really rough - I did used these for years and was happy but don't know what is going on at Rotosound at the moment I have had several issues, but would say try Status half wounds before going flats I have been there thomastik infeld great string but one dimension no way you are going to slap them. Elites Stainles are good, my other favourite now is GHS nickles. I have just bought some Carvin nickles from bassgear to try at £23 and will get some Status nickles to try after that. As i have recently found price is not a reliable indication of quality.

Big Band gig - first time I have used my MBass on a reading jazz gig, but I had recently put on a set of Status ground wounds and it sounded awesome so thought I’d go for it. I also took the twin Berg to frighten the brass players instead of the usual wizzy M-line. Well it had to be done - I’m just a bit pissed about playing a Maynard Ferguson version of Birdland where the Bass is left with bugger all to do. And it is now a trumpet feature. What’s that about?

Mine is the same, No probs at gig volume, It is the physical size and angle of the blades I have a 1u rack mounted PA amp with two fans like this and they sound the same. It isn't a fault with your amp.

John, Bill, excuse me jumping in on this one but I have a spare EA wizzy 12" speaker i bought when i thought my EA wizzy Mline speaker was shot, it turned out to be a connection problem on my amp - now resolved. If I was to make a sealed box for this, for ease of condstruction is there a known volume i should work to, are they Eminance? If so would they or EA be the best people to give me the volume. Or is the actual origins of EA's wizzy a closely guarded secret Bill.

Markbass LMK usually gets the gig over the GK MB500fusion. But the Berg does like the valves though.
