Good fun set there - Geoham Love Bad moon rising, wish we still played it.

I also think older instruments even electric basses would have been made with seasoned woods , cheaper mass produced instruments today are not, A luthier would ensure he selects woods from reliable sources, the best he can get hence the price tag and better consistent tone if you are willing to pay the money. You could try leaving your bass on its stand in front of the stereo all day while you are out at work well it was a thought.

Having come to bass from trombone I remember the storey from Denis Wick a maker of mouth pieces for brass instruments, he wrote a small pocket book. One storey was about a guy who could not get a certain note on his trombone who discussed this with is teacher. Who then had a go and blew the note hard and long into the instrument and from that day on the student could also play that note. He uses this storey to explain how all instruments improve with age as the vibration from playing aligns the molecular structure of the brass or wood. Vibrations and resonant frequencies of the notes seem to lock themselves within structure of the instrument. Well there are plenty of 300 year old cellos and violins as well as 60's basses that support this. So am not suprised at your comments and probably is more than just you getting used to it.

mmmm a 5 string double reverse P please Jon
-
I would second the upper freq only comments great when bi -amped top end only I use the CE3B works fine for the couple of songs i use it on but would now try and find a pedal that does dual chorus and Flanger with a selectable high freq setting so maybe the MXR mentioned above is worth checking out.

Over thinking when playing - is it just me?
deepbass5 replied to Osiris's topic in General Discussion
Playing songs in different keys in too many bands can have its down side. I play the intro into Sweet Caroline and the guitarist joins me on the second phrase but the other week I was a tone out. (wrong band ) The art is to switch back while they still think its them. -

Doddy - on the button there mate. I am a Bill Wyman - I tend to go to sleep at the back. But I am listening like a Jedi and will jump on anything that changes. It sometimes feels like I am intercepting their brainwaves before the message gets to their fingers, but that comes from playing together for years. But sometimes I have played the first 8 or 16 and think what the fcckk are we playing I hope it comes to me before the chorus. Sometimes it is best not to let your brain get in the way. But that brings us back to Daddy’s point. Practice -
The three on the right have all ready started to melt, best keep them in the case.

Thats the problem right there, I can see the bow from here. Stop the Rays coming through the window 'n' it should be fine

Just want to add the fan noise does not transmit the sound through the amp it is pure wind noise. I have a 1U PA amp with the same size fans and these make exactly the same noise It does not worry me but if we are not playing and MD is talking people in the band will look round and say what is that. So I can see why the Pit Muso on Talkbass site has an issue in that situation.

My mb500 fusion fan will come on at some point on every occasion its used I would think this normal ? this is the valve model so generating more heat than the solid state unit
-
I think sometimes 500 watts are too much and we would all be encouraged to set our gain signal paths more sensibly if we used 300 watt amps. with both my Mark bass and my GK mb500 I set the input gain between 10<12 o'clock the main out on the Markbass is never much over 1/4 way up say 9 o'clock where the GK head would be at 12 o'clock. for the same output. The GK fan is noisy too much for a studio recording session, where the Markbass rarely comes in and can't be heard so worth shopping around. I would be interested what Genz and TC owners feel. I also have an issue that to get all the best features from a company you need say their 800 or 900 watt model, most of us would be willing to pay the same for the one that suits our music and band situation. not chasing big watts in order to get useful features.

Sorry that was 4' foot but well spotted

Some years ago whilst performing Patsy Gallant's From New York to LA, well I dropped my guts - really bad. The opening vocal line on the verse ended with an Ahhhhh. And as my bottom gas rolled of the stage like dry ice the people dancing below the 4" high stage all went Phwooor in time with the vocal Ahhhhh. Still brings tears to my eyes now

mmmmm. just put on Missouri sky in respectful meditation

Fantastic i'm gonna live for ever

I agree a 5 string is a different instrument than a 4 string and needs to be considered as such when selecting one. 35" will make a difference but all mine are 34" a lot of good advice in the video but i also think bridge anchorage and nut material as well as machine head position and neck wood selection all play a part. My advice would be go to a specialist bass shop and try some high end basses to know what a good one can sound like then try and find one as near to that sound as you can afford

Last Month caught Hamilton Loomis in Oxford this time he had a certain Mr Weir on Bass and was playing an MB800 fusion with some wild settlings that i would not consider but worked for him. so just jumped on the Tube to see if he was on there, link attached but he is not playing the 800 in the clip. But if they are still touring worth catching as they were as tight as i have seen them. Great bass player. The thing with the 800 because of the LED knobs you can work out the settings including knobs that are pulled. He played with bass rolled off 10o'clock but with deep pulled. and with low mid rolled off about the same, then high mid boosted about 2 oclock with the High at about 1 o'clock also pulled. The contour was also pulled and well over at about 3 oclock. Of course don't know what the house sound man was doing with his signal. check them out http://youtu.be/Hu78aqTTwmQ

It's only a bass while its being played which is prob why he is selling it, he forgot he had it.

This is the craziest pastime Sibob, but interested enough to rip mine from the board this morning and have a look. ( 194400) Japan so pray tell what date is this one

Just to note I did like the 750N's a lot when i had a Rob Allen but they are thick heavy strings sounded great on that bass but since going over to a Status Electro 5 string I bought status black tape wound £25 cheaper I also tried GHS which were fatter than the status and higher tension than the Status - and not as musical to my ear so went back to the Status strings - watch out that your machine head hole can take the Dia.of the La bella as the modern light weight tuners are not as forgiving as the old open fender type. oh i also had to file my nut to get the GHS on my bass and as the La bella are even thicker you may be into some DIY
