1. Thats got me thinking, I should treat myself more often. mmmmmmmm Enjoy
2. He is only 21 and yep he can dance and play. bugger http://youtu.be/p17W7vRgcf0
3. I'll be getting the album on the strength of that. I've never heard a bass mixed that well at a rushed live event, across the whole register of the bass. ??? His mum must have been on the desk. Or could they, no not on the Beeb
4. Worth experimenting with different foams, some of the packing foam that comes in parcels, is plastic they tend to kill the sound, I found a very good foam out of an instrument carry case where you pull out sections of foam to fit, this allowed the strings to vibrate enough and damped them slowly. Another was a rubber cabinet door edging rubber strip. So keep experimenting to get the sound you want. Also alter the amount of foam so there is not too much pressure on the strings.
5. Interesting comments Guys, I try to faithfully learn the line on the record, but as many have stated which version, it is important the band is given the same version to learn and not just head off to YouTube. Last couple of songs we learned GaGa. You and I, played on UK Radio is the Mark Taylor version with a semi country guitar riff. This was difficult to find. But was what everyone was hearing. Maroon five's move like Jagger we did the YouTube (live at the Voice 2011) version; it was a cleaner less synth based version and easier to establish your parts. Band Line up. We changed from 5 to 4 pieces about 10 years ago, so with no keyboard I had to re evaluate my contribution to each song, the Guitarist also. Not every song but I did start to listen as a punter, where was the energy focus, that may mean me doing a mundane repetitive phrase, and not put in the sexy bass riff, and the guitarist may have to learn the clean sax break, than use his new fuzz pedal. But yep I will listen to the bass player all night and not dance too. That’s what we do
6. I bought a MEY adjustable stool from Thomann for the wife when she broke her foot, she had to sing and do a Jessie J it was about £120. but now its mine and is great.
7. Slightly left field, but I installed the bass version on my passive schack and really loved the result; their new 3 pos switch must be another useful addition that may come close to what you are after worth checking if they can do the onboard version with the switch. http://www.stellartone.com/Page.asp?NavID=273
8. From your last post above, you are admitting the set list is a compromise. You have also made it clear your concerns and what you are up against to impress. So my advice is to not go out with a mishmash of songs just because you know them but to choose songs that hit the target audience in your local band venues. Shock and awe is the order of the day here, if you rehearse hard and nail the numbers and own them you could play anything. Obscure punk numbers , some Ska, Pretenders, Corgi’s, Blondie throw in some Metal album tracks and one C&W that should floor um. Conviction is the key; don't copy the rival bands in your patch aim to kick them into touch.
9. Thinking about getting a Mini TC tuner Anyone know if they Do take a battery or are they just for pedal board powered supplies Any Comments welcome TC site does not say either way
10. Can't add much more. But my own observation when trying to play his lines, was how many open strings he used, this enabled him to play his trademark boiling, bubbling bass phrases at speed. So it seemed to me he brought all his upright bass techniques into play. As I have approached the bass avoiding open notes as much as possible I found this really difficult. So my suggestion is to explore how much his upright bass playing defined his Motown contribution
11. You need a 4 x 10 and kick one of the cones in, should sound just like him. Well thats what the man said.
12.
I did once, just outside of Filey. My mum made me go outside to play.
wasn't you with the football as well was it ?
13. Just got an MB 500 fusion from Markorbit, So went off to find a padded Gig bag, Found this in Staples. for £20.50p bargin fits like a glove and can take my wires too. It's a Targus clamshell Laptop case -XS 10" Worth noting. I checked out the valves fitted and they are the new JJ Tesla ECC83-s ( note the S) I was thinking of raiding a friends shed and wacking some Mullards in there but these are getting good reviews both sides of the pond, despite being eastern block copies of the original Tesla, which upsets the Valve buffs, they sound great so musically have no reason to change, less i get curious later.
14. I think it is a mixture of language and the fact that so many woods are categoresed under the Rosewood family My shack had a Padouk board really nice Lefay do basses with complete Padouk necks, this was considered in the rosewood family. more red than brown, would love to try one
15. 2x18 has it, the crossover only allows the amp to see 4 ohms at any time.
16. I have a set of Peavey Hi-sis 1's (12" tops) 4 ohm. and two 15" BW hi-sis bass bins 4ohm with poles. passive system If you are not familiar your amp would see 4 ohms a side, you plug into the bass bins where the internal cross over is linked to the tops, from memory they cross over at 180 Hz. These are old now but in good working order, tops only used vocals, larger venues we added bins for guitar bass and drums. sorry for delay in posting pictures but just got these back from my local music shop who over priced them. £250 all in
17. Can't help saying why a 2 x 15" and a 4 x 12" ? Having said that is the amp 100Watt? You could use Kirchhoff's CurrentLaw. The 2 x15 will be two 8ohms in parallel = 4ohms and the 4 x 12" will be 8 ohm speakers in a series- parallel configuration. It’s all maths after that, Without putting pen to paper it looks like you may get away with it. as the higher wattage speakers are the two 8ohms in the 15 cab, but check how the 4 x12 is wired to be safe. I assume four 8 ohm speakers two in series parallel to another two in series. 8+8=16 8+8=16 in parallel = 16/2 = 8 ohm
18. Had one once, a great design with that woody honk. These have got to start attracting more attention as time passes, for the Wenge neck alone. good luck
19. I'm Paranoid about my band gear period, as I also own the PA and Monitors, Lights etc. I set up two basses on stands to acclimatise and tune them prior to going on, and I surround them with things to avoid clumsy people squeezing by. And that’s basically it; there are clumsy people and considerate careful people. You get to know those around you and which are which. Have you noticed the same people packing away are the ones that will just pull a mic lead till it comes free or snaps? They will fell drum and Mike stands in their haste phew!! I gunna lie down for a while, I've come over all angry for you .
20. would still like to get this right, winging it at present just can't hear it to nail it
21. £250 still available,
22. Mad price for a great cab, some one buy it. Then buy my EA amp to go with it. smashing
23. You need to come back and re define your question. Again assuming you mean Big band = Miller, Basie, Heath etc. First thing you need is an MD. This is where you realise you cannot run a band as a democracy. So you need a good guy out front who knows his onions and all sections can respect. Next, you had better hope the musos you have got together can Listen. Listening is the most important skill, then feel. If you are really lucky the MD will teach the brass players how to listen to a Rhythm section and what you are there for. This probably will not happen and each section Sax, Trumpet and Bones will gang together and blame the rhythm section for both speeding up and slowing things down. Because they think they know best and individually have all grown up competing with each other to be the loudest, fastest and highest player. So when the MD has spent a few years trying to get them to play as a section, you may stand a chance they start listening to you. Think that’s enough to be going on with. Is great fun if you don't weaken
24. I'm Just hurting that I bought my first Precision ( Oly white 77) off John East in 1979 for £200 and worse still traded it in 1985 for £325
