1. Here Goes I think it was Feb 80 but could be a year either side. Point is it was bl--dy cold. Got a gig in a circus tent in Milton Keynes shopping centre car park. It was one of those days where it never got above freezing, when we got there the other band had already set up in the Circus ring, and we were asked to set up in the Lions cage. Ya that’s what we thought. We wasted 20 min arguing the toss and eventually they decided that was the best place. We could hear the big cats growling and fighting in the truck outside so we were naturally nervous of just having a steel hooped tunnel with a trap door between us. The sick Roman joke did not materialise but the temperature was just dropping away, we could hardly hold our instruments we unprofessionally played in coats with our 'Four Tops' style cat suits and silk blouses underneath. This was an Adult party night with blue comic and stripper. Brandy De Frank the reason I remember her name after all this time was her nipples. Well you would. She appeared on an episode of Minder later, she was a stripper or hooker on that. Never forget a face The other thing I would rather forget was the Singer now the wife put her hand bag down by the drums and on retrieving it, felled the hi-hat which fell and dug itself into the neck of John East’s 60's Precision like an axe. He was our bass player at the time I was on Trombone. It was a really bad end to a thoroughly miserable night. We shivered all the way home. Ahhh The 70's
2. I started out on Rotosound, 15 years then went to Elites 5-10 years with a few jump backs to Roto solo bass now use GHS boomers nickle, love them they feel warm and have a lived in feel, no clanky zingy suprizes to EQ out. (Fingerstyle pop covers).
3. all green or all blue, would get my vote but not both so Red on this occasion
4. 'Hey that ain't working' Thanks Ian I've just had a movement
5. Guess you are all referring to the Shadows little walk round in circles, nice!! Nope can’t do it In fact I can't even step on a pedal without playing a bum note, let alone listen to someone tell me a car number plate that needs moving in the car park. I know I should be using my left brain for this Bass playing lark but can't get into it since my electric shock therapy. Anyway what’s wrong with two sets of Bill Wyman impressions?

Fuller sound

Picking up on Doddy's technique suggestion. It is normal when someone is soloing, guitar or horns to drop back to a simpler line, longer notes so not to distract from the solo. Part respect and support. check you are not cutting the notes short, 4 beats/bar = 4 beats no fag papers in between. roll the treble off cut the middle n boost the bass for a more dub sound. That approach alone may do the trick without a pedal. You may need to just knock out 4 to the bar root notes and follow the chord sequence, if you mean thin chord wise rather than volume, then if it seems to improve rework this basic verse to make it a little more interesting to complement the solo. sorry if you are already doing this and just need a pedal

APHEX 1402 Bass Xciter pedal You get enhancer and exciter in one unit, you get tons of girth in the bottem end and can bring out the harmonics with the exciter top end. a new model is out now as well
8. Doctor J, Is on the mark, I bought my Warwick Streamer second hand, with broken JANII so needed replacing. I looked up on the Warwick site down loaded the info. And the JAN III is better but never had to adjust it. Much prefer a zero fret and a nut as a string guide. My opinion is you are after good solid contact why have a nut that is pivoting on two Allen keys? And falls off when you take your strings off. Any good fixed nut is better Bone or brass. Thomann.de were the cheapest i found if you do go ahead. but i bought other things to make up postage
9. Just want to add another pause for thought Dingwalls do one string size I assume to provide a balanced set across the fan fret system. Because the G string is shorter than normal he keeps it 45, as the string length increases he drops the gauge so to prevent the tension required for a larger gauge from affecting the neck adversely say on the B string. At 37" I think. Thats my reasoning behind it? This is because you need greater tension for large gauges - V- light gauges for same pitch and anchor points? My view being that it is best to have low action so the neck is in compression length ways which must be more stable with all the benefits mentioned above(less hand strain, fretted note not bending out of tune). As opposed to a high action due to forward bow where it becomes like a long bow and adjustments in tension are in part taken up by neck bend. I would think extreme examples of this set up would be hard to stay in tune. Praps that’s for another discussion thread. Its an extreme example but i believe thats what is happening. Any thoughts,
10. Musicianship Meaning listening, where they fit in the mix. Where the music is more important than personal egos The customer is more important than anyone on stage Talk to each other, clear and honest dialogue Light and shade = a guitarist who hates loud music
11. Interesting those who have replied so far believe there is a difference and that the string length is longer with high action. I would question if this is the reason, unless you are confusing action with regard to bridge height or action by changing the relief in the neck by adjusting the truss rod. With a forward bow you are shortening the string length, when I adjust my set up I usually check if the relief is right first and have found that adjusting the neck back so increasing string length actually improves tension and sound and makes octave tuning easier and correct. (Open - 12th fret). Those of you above do you prefer high action due to a lot of relief forward bow. And or bridge height Summing up what I have said above I find minimal relief is best, then adjust action bridge saddle height to suit playing style, then pickups to maintain maximum volume This one should run Homer
12. Nice venue Alan, Hope all goes well for the future, what ever the musical path. One door closes another Opens Hows the Ray going sorry to hear the 6 string didn't win you over, was a nice bass though. What were you playing through looks like an Epi 4x10 whats the amp ? Good luck Paul.
13. Not bad at all really, early start leave home 16.15pm got back 02.30am 70 miles each way Masonic Ladies night in Hotel south coast usual format started playing 9.30. So lots of sitting around. Played a lot of new numbers for the first time. Price Tag, Pack up your troubles, Mayhem, Hollywood, Woolly Bully they all went very well considering it was two weeks ago we ran them at a one of rehearsal. Feel like I have been run over by a team of horses this morning but other than that I feeling fine. Decided to use my two EA cabs and the EA amp it sounded nice at home this week, struggled with the acoustics for a while but got there with mucho tweaking. A difficult audience to judge they seemed to like the up tempo rockier numbers last night. Sets attached for your amusement.
14. How much is it worth ? could join the Musicians union and get free insurance plus public liability, but it will cost you about £150 / year but would get loads of free advice inc contracts etc. or try www.victorcknight.com they have low rate / £ value for a few items would be cheaper option
15. Homer brought this over to my place to try when he dropped off his shuker I bought from him (I’m feeling Guilty now) First time I had tried one of these but was impressed with the playability of the neck and the action which was low tight and well balanced. A Pro bit of kit to get your hands on, and Homer is a straight ahead guy to deal with, sorry to hear it wasn't your thing Al. But you gave it a go Good luck
16. A Bump for one of the best cabs I have owned Yes they are big, because they need to be, Peavey are true to the physics on this baby. Black widow great range and articulation. Better than most of those other cabs with fancy names Good luck
17. Nuff said, I'll consider myself fortunate and avoid Pedal GAS
18. What is it about OC-2 I have one by chance, bought it second hand 15 years ago, I have always thought i should get a new one soon, but a dep guitarist a few Gigs ago said wow you've got an OC-2. and various threads on here i have seen people going on about them.
19. I think the general opinion across the music industry is that all instruments can improve. Due to sound being generated from vibrations, and so how well the instrument vibrates will add to the ease that each tone is produced. Brass players believe this also and as an ex Trombone player, the thought is that you need to expose the instrument to the notes you play in the range the instrument covers so lining up the molecular structure within the instrument to be more sympathetic to those frequencies. This is where I believe dead spots come from. No one piece of wood will grow the same or be cut the same so it is quite likely to find certain frequencies will not vibrate or talk as well as others. Some may also be over emphasised which may not be nice. I think the first thing to take on board is there are good and bad instruments and seek those out. You may want the sunburst P bass in the shop but the blue one sounds best. There are probably a lot of classical musicians out there that will agree a well made instrument will probably improve with age, and a dog will probably always be a dog.
20. Love my 5 string Steamer stage 1 But not happy with the control layout or the stacked Volume /blend and find the mid a bit wishy-washy John East said the Warwick shafts are larger Diameter than his. Has anyone retro fitted any different arrangement or managed to re-arrange the knobs and still fit the cavity. I fancy a change, so any pioneers who have tackled the Streamer control layout Please let me know what you managed to do.
21. Think Dans on the right track. I'd be suprised if that is a Bass, so a Synth using an octave effect with some sort of inverted saw tooth waveform. So I would agree an Octaver, I use a OC2 but the clip is much cleaner than a pedal and the inverted Wah type of effect would probably have to go infront because it probably would not handle the lower octave the other way. Need to experiment with an Octaver and a synth pedal or Wah. a multi effects pedal may get you closer with more editing available. Have fun trying
22. You need help son. It can happen to anyone at a moment of weakness Samaritans may be able to help or try the Salvation Army they can save your sole and there are not that many different kinds of tambourine to start re-offending. I have found where you you are going wrong:- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his Bass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour's. You can always buy a Conklin 6 string and join a gospel band and you will be forgiven
23. I did the same used Velcro strip and pads under each pedal. It holds fine but when you want to change things around, can be an issue with EBS pedals with soft rubber foam underneath as it rips the foam off your pedals. Boss Ok also Aphex with metal bottoms. Velcro was so tough that it also pulled the velcro strip off the board I have now stappled and super glued it on
24. Via Batteries direct, they arrive real quick
25. I'm Not into Ibenez but the the ATK range are a good honest work horse with that Precision MM feel. These come up regular and at good prices. I think they are under rated
