1.
BF tune their cabs to push the mids... and when you push the mids, your ear tells you that the SPL is greater. EBS hype the top end - but that is easily nullified by turning down the tweeter. I would never endorse the 1x10 and 1x12 Newline cabs... they are fartboxes and not comparable to the rest of the lineup. Their 2x12 is very much a different kettle of fish compares to running 2 1x12s.
I know all that theory and tried different cabs from various brands. I settled with what i have because is the best gear i've found that will reproduce the sound comming out of my bass as faithfull as possible without EQing. The mids aren't bumped in my cab, they're present and i like it. Most bass cabs have a mid-cut voicing because that goes in favour of a big percentage of bassplayers that use a V-shaped EQ, it's not bad, it's well thought, but not for me. Coincidently, in my last gig i had a friend that went with us and helped us with our sound. We were using the house PA (JBL 2x15 tops and 1x18 sub on each side, both active). He had a device with him to read SPL and freq response, at 1m the PA read 80dB and my S12T went up to 100dB, with the same line played, no tricks. Freq curve in my cab wasn't very far from flat also.
2. Almost at the end of page 2 of this thread and not a single picture... Two questions: Has anybody used it with a preamp pedal as bass backline? EDIT: messed my math. Note to self: need to increase coffee dose in the morning...
3. Just chipping in for a comment about EBS Hi-Fi(ness) that some are regarding here. I had a pair os EBS cabs, the neoline 1x10 and 1x12, i thought they sounded good until i bought a Barefaced Midget T and then i saw just how many mids were sucked by the EBS cabs and the SPL was way lower on EBS. I'm not saying it's not quality gear, it is very good but for Hi-Fi i would go for something with a flatter response like My current BF Super12T or the BB2/BT2 etc. Cheaper options like used SWR gear or GK are also very hi-Fi(ish) and easy to find for sale. I would stay well away from anything TC related if i were you, won't be as defined as you may believe, i'm saying this because i've tried both the head and the cabs that have been mentioned in this thread, too muddy if you don't dial in a lot of mids and control the low but then the cabs can't keep up with that EQ... i hated it. If you want to go lightweight then you can find cheap Aguilar TH500 / Genz Benz STL9 / GK MB500 used on the sales forum, they'll sound flatter than the TC.
4. Ask a friend to loan you a P for a rehearsall and a gig. Then you'll know if it's the tone you're after or not and can safely spend or save your money. I don't need a P bass, never did and probably never will. I still own my first bass (a P copy), it's not versatile enough to be taken to a gig. In my sales/trades i've got to own 3 or 4 P's, as easy as they came they all went out the door. Not my sound/tone.
5. I got a Contego Protec and it's been looking great for almost 3 years. No visible signs of wear and tear. Rigid enough to protect my basses and the shoulder straps are very comfortable.
6. I can't see myself selling a bass (or any other piece of gear) without cleaning it up, doing a setup and making sure everything works as it should. If anything is broken or malfunctioning beyond my ability to repair it i'll state that quite clearly in my add. I know i won't be raising it's value with that work but if i hate when i buy a bass (for the average used price value) and get one that's dirty and unplayable i sure won't be that guy that sends one like that to another person. If you find a buyer that's well informed about the condition of the bass and is prepared to do the work it needs. And if you are willing to sell it for a price that reflects the need of that work when comparing to the average used prices i think it's fair for you to send it as it is.
7. SS for me, i've used Nickel in the past but after moving on to SS they sound "dull" to me now. I love the brightness and punch of SS. It's true that they're a bit too harsh on the finger on the first use but, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, after +/- one hour playing they become as smooth as any Nickel set. In my case i'm using D'Addario Prosteels for the past 2-3 years and just tried the new Flexsteels. Both are great and durable (in my standards that are about 2-3 months per set, even though i know that when i find that my strings are dead most bass players will find they sound like brand new Nickels for their taste).
8. My band has PA with 2 subs and 2 tops. We plug everything there appart from the snare and cymbals. The sound is way better for the audience, everybody can dial out their onstage volume and this results in more comfort while playing. If you have the gear you should use it. Mixers have more than one volume adjustment for each channel so you'll only sound too loud if you want to.
9.
I've edited the centre option and added another. Assuming we're all similar ages, I guess parents in the 60s had it tough and there simply wasn't the cash about to invest in instruments for amusement, where these days we as parents go buying games consoles just to keep kids up with their peer group. Maybe this is a way of making up for what we never had?
Even though you added the option i never had music lessons up until a few years ago, i learned with friends and picked up a few notions of theory along the way. I'm in another age bracket, i was born in '81 but my village wasn't too evolved until this last couple of decades. About 5 years ago a music school opened just down the road of where i used to live, that would have been very usefull 25 years ago I guess that my background clearly justifies my inability to sing the simplest thing or my ears recognize immediatly a given note.
10. Haven't heard the song but after reading the comments from other users i believe that an EHX Microsynth will do it. It has envelope with speed tailoring, drive and even octave. I also remember seeing one for sale over here very recently.
11. I can't vote because there's no answer for my situation. Nobody in my family played an instrument or was a music buff. My parents did buy me an accoustic guitar on a trip to spain when i was 5 or 6 years old but the intention was to be a toy and a decoration piece. It was only when i was 15 that i saw my friends learning guitar so i had mine strung up and tuned and i learned the basic chords whith my friends. Everybody in my family encouraged my learning of guitar but there was never a talk about following music professionally and i never felt that calling either so i took my degree in engineering and keept playing bass as my main hobby (a well paying hobby in wich i try to be as professional as i can). If i had taken theory lessons sooner in my life i could have taken the music route but i still think that i made the right choice as i was a late bloomer in music and would have struggled a lot to get to a high-end/pro level. It also helped that at that time there were no internet or music schools anywhere near me (only philarmonic orchestra and the nearest music school was +30km away). Kids today have it much easier to get the information and can learn a lot faster. I'll make sure i'll try to interest my children in music as soon as possible (first i need to make them ).
12. I started playing bass in the late nineties, my first GAS was for an Ibanez Soundgear (i wouldn't mind about the model or specs at that time) but soon replaced as i saw a Yamaha TRB5PII online. 10 years later, straight out of college and in my first paying job i joined Basschat with the sole intention of contacting a member who was selling my current bass (and it came to stay). Again, another case of BC comming to the rescue
13. I use a heavy bass and found a solution for shoulder pain with the Minotaur straps: http://www.minotaur.gr/product_info.php/cPath/25/products_id/64 It's the widest strap i've found and has some padding for the soulder. I've tried neoprene straps in the past and found that the continuos bouncing of the bass made my shoulder more tired and also my arms as i had to be constantly holding the neck or playing standing still. The real right answer to this question is really to get a lighter bass. Until i find one with the same core tone as my current one i'll keep hauling it while i'm able.
14. I've used dozens of D'Addario sets for the past 5-6 years in all my basses. I only found one dead B string in a set and Thomann sent me a replacement string right away, no questions asked. You were very unlucky to recieve that set but lucky enough that D'Addario read your post and fixed your problem.
15. Yes, over and over again. Every bass i bought since my TRB5PII were indulgent purchases as i allways come back and gig the TRB. I got it in 2010 and after it i would guess that something between 10 and 20 basses gone through my hands. I'm putting all basses before it as upgrades towards finding "the one". Thankfully i think i've seen the light some time ago and my last bass purchase was a Uke bass last christmas (again indulgent as i really don't have a use to justify it but it's cool and i love noodling with it). No bass GAS in the near future for me.
16. Even if the cabs only have one speakon each you can also make a "Y" cable to connect everything.
17.
Or go for a Gotoh BB-04 - that one has 2 batteries. Then, maybe you can build in a change-over switch, so you really should never get let down by a battery on a gig! It would also act as an "Off" switch if you switch to an empty battery holder. http://www.ebay.co.u...ox/281709372264
What a excelent idea and very creative. It would be great for my TBR5PII as it has active pickups and no passive operation but i won't be hacking it for the sake of nothing... i'll keep carrying the extra battery in the gig bag. But it's really a very good idea for a custom build or mod in a lower value bass.
18. Mooer Pure Octave is a great pedal at a great price. will do what you're after and more.
19.
That's good advice, thank you - just a small question though: how can I find myself in a band if I don't even have an amp to audition with? You do make a good point though
When contacted by the band for audition you ask them about the conditions of the rehearsall space and if it has a bass amp and cab. If there's none then you know that you'll have to buy/borrow one for the audition.
20. Why don't you save the money and research a few suitable rigs. Hold on the purchase until you find yourself in a band. Then you'll see if the practise space has an amp and listen to the opinion of others regarding PA and having a bass rig on stage for gigs. My guess is that you'll end up buying the rig, other musicians will want to hear some bass on stage especially the drummer but that can be obtained with monitors.
21.
Effects loops are intended for line level voltage effects, usually 19" rack. An instrument level effect may not work at all in the loop. Some do, some don't.
Very true, but in this case i believe that he's not doing Bass > Pedal > FX Return, i think that the bass in still in the amp's input and the pedal on the FX loop FX Send > Pedal > FX Return. Without more info from the OP we're just guessing now.
22. The Ashbory Uke basses are 18" scale and cheaper than the Kalas, they also have the electric model. The rubber strings will be a plus for a 6 year old's fingers but the way they go out of tune with ease might be a problem in a very important stage where you want him to trein his ear.
23. Have a talk with him before the rehearsall, let him know your point of view and don't forget to tell him that the rest of the band shares your opinion. When setting up for the rehearsall and comes the time to do the bass mix have the entire band paying attention and commenting on how they like the volume. I've done outdoor gigs where i didn't knew the soundguys so i allways tried to have a little talk to them just to try to explain them that my sound isn't scooped or full of bass and no one reacted badly for this, all presented me with a great sound, just like i wanted. With a simple, cordial, talk you can go a long way. Buy him a beer after the rehearsall if he managed to listen to you and solve your problem.
24.
(...) It could be that these are hand assembled in Finland?
That's an interesting thought. We shouldn't forget the difference between "hand built" and "hand assembled". These new micro-amps that are popping up from every manufacturer are in fact assembled from a hand full of parts that are outsourced to other builders. In example, my Alembic F1X preamp is hand built, when i look inside i can see all the components and manual solderings. With modern PCB designs and SMD components we get robots bulding and populating the PCB's at a faster rate. This kind of thing should make the finish product cheaper but it doesn't seem to be the case when we look at current RRP's. I was hoping that this recent boom of Class-D/SMPS micro amps from almost every manufacturer would bring some price drops but, in the end of the day we're bassplayers and we all suffer from tunnel vision syndrome everytime we see something advertised as "boutique"...
25. The new models are in fact weaker (not just in power) than their predecessors. They have a tendency to break down more easily and the core tone isn't the same, they lack some of that incredible authority and (can i say it?) heft that the tiny P5110's had. I have a P5110 and a friend had a P3115 so i've played with both and can write this post IME. If it were me i'd be looking at the Fender Rumbles or GK MB combos or trying to find a used P5110 on the market. Edit: In fact, if someone is looking to get rid of a P5210 let me know
