What's the deal with buying Fender neck and body separately??
Ghost_Bass replied to uk_lefty's topic in Bass Guitars
Hasn't anybody mentioned Fender's lack of QC when it comes to neck gaps? Selling separately people can't notice them... -
I've got a first glance at the work in progress. This was made by Ian (Bottle), it looks great! Let´s see if this link works. I'm not being able to post pics here. I use Picasa (now renamed to Google Photos) to host images and share the links with the "image" button but it's not working lately... maybe something changed in Picasa or BC... When posting i get a message saying "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community." So, hopefully here is the direct link to my Picasa account: https://goo.gl/photo...P1xKnVUeE9icK96 If it doesn't work heres another link for my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/gnkn9urtt5r6u0w/1.jpg?dl=0 Let me know if you can open it. Cheers
I tried the backwards kick pedal and I really couldn't work it. I'd need days of practise to do this. You can get special pedals with a reverse linkage to use with a cajon, but again it's a bit more than I want to spent for one gig
He uses a normal pedal, like the one in his drum kit. He covers the "head" of the pedal with some heavy duty foam and gaffa tape! Here's a video of him using it: https://youtu.be/t7ygkY0LyDY

With a bit of EQ you can use you cajon as a kick drum. Velcro the pedal and base of the cajon to a piece of carpet so it won't slip. My drummer does a lot of acoustic gigs doing this, it sounds impressively good. Just remember to add a bit of foam to your pedal to get rid of some of the "click" when it hits the cajon.

34, mind thinks like 24, body feels like 44...
-
Why do you think you need a EQ pedal? What gear are you using and what's lacking from it tonewise? There's nothing wrong about having a EQ pedal, i can find a handfull of uses for one, but i think that more than often people tend to have them in the pedalboard without having any real need for it. Basses and amps already have tone control, is the investment in a EQ pedal really necessary?

I would go for a second BB. More of the same and a perfect replacement for your existent cab if any problem happens. Get a stand to raise the rig a little bit to ear level. If you hear a boxy sound first place yourself in front of the driver to see if the boxiness comes from the EQ or your own position regarding the cab. If it's an EQ problem then fix it with the mid knobs in the amp.
DJs and discos have been supposedly killing live music since at least the mid 70s. They can't be doing a very good job.
I see your point but in the last months/years there are a lot of pubs that stopped having live music and now only have DJ's and Karaoke. Their excuse is that is more profitable for them (i can't judge them for doing that).
-
Oh! And i think nobody mentioned DJ's yet! They also have their good share in decreasing live music gigs.

For me it's all about the gigs, that's where the all the fun of playing bass is. I find it very boring and uninteresting to play alone at home. If i have a couple of weeks without gigs i try to schedule a rehearsall with the band or go to a jam/open mic night just to keep playing with other musicians. Bass alone isn't as fun as playing it along with a drummer and a harmonic instrument. For me that's the real definition of playing music and being a musician (no harm intended on those who do the opposite). Getting gigs is getting harder everywere but if you put together a good quality band with a good entertainer/singer as a front man it will be easier to keep the bookings comming. My experience with my current band is that we only have to make a very big effort to get that first gig on a new venue and then we're set there. It's also a fact that now there are many bands (i'm talking about cover bands, like mine) and there are a lot that are kids starting out with cheap gear, poorly eq'd sound and lower skills and they're playing almost for free with a full agenda. This makes it hard to book a decent paying gig because most venues only look at the band's price, but it's just a mather of sticking up with your guns, maintain the quality and price and there will be venues that will apreciate you for that and pay the fair price for your music. Looking at a lot of close examples, the pubs/venues that go for the cheap stuff end up closing more frequently than the ones that keep a quality standard. EDIT: I ended up straying from the topic. In conclusion, if i don't have any more gigs i'll probably sell most of my gear, keep a minimum that allow me to get together with friends at each other's homes and jam along with them from time to time and probably i'll end up picking up the bass a lot less than usual.
Here's your first problem. Any sound tech worth their salt would never use an onboard DI. The amp dies, so does all direct signal to the desk. Chance of a DI box failing? - very low in comparison.
I take good care of my gear and don´t abuse it. I check it and do maintenance regularly. I can't say the same for those scratched and dented DI's that look like they've fallen from a moving truck in to a meat grinder. Luckily i have good gear with great DI's, i allways ask the tech if they prefer to use theirs or mine and one look at the Alembic preamp is all they need to go with mine. I never insisted in using my gear against the tech's will. As for the amp failling i think there's a higher probability that the bass or any of my pedals and cables fail before the amp. Even if the amp pack up it will depend on the failure because i send my signal PRE-EQ (no mud or tone-snobbery going to FoH) so it will need to have a failure in the PSU or the input jack to cut my signal to the desk. But even if the unthinkable happens i do keep their DI on top of the amp in case of an emergency, just like a spare battery and jack cable. -

Now (a bit more) serious. I don't count on wedges for my bass monitoring. I don't even use the suplied DI as my amp's DI are professional grade. (Funny story, the only time i was asked to use the company's DI it was a behringer BSS-clone. A clueless tech insisted that the DI in my Thunderfunk was causing a hum and the behringer didn't, i tried to point out to him that he had the -10dB pad active on the DI and the humm was still there, only lower volume. He ended up finding out that a faulty line on the multipar was the culprit. ) My gear plays at any volume the venue needs, that's why we have volume knobs. If asked to turn up/down by any tech i'll gladly do it. I never ask bass on my wedge because most of the times it messes with my hearing of the rest of the band. For me is bass behind me, on my rig, vocals, kick drum and not very often guitar on the wedge. -
I played the Robin in bilston a while ago, best bass sound ever in my monitor, far better than the £2000 worth of my rig that wad barely doing anything behind me. My old function band had an EV pa, the tops and bins could pump out much more smooth fat bass than a backline bass amp even with a 8x10.
Ahhh! A 8x10... now i see your problem... -
EBS_freak has posted this pic of the new Darkglass cabs over on the new Darkglass amp thread. I'm wondering if TKS have branched out.. what do you think?
Love the look and especialy the fact that they can be stacked on their side without having the logo looking weird
And I would imagine that these days a lot of PAs are powered by class D amps...
Yep, our PA consists in two RCF ART312 tops with two dB Technologies subs (soon to be replaced by RCF subs). All class-D, loud, great sounding and very easy to carry
-
For me, i only need that the B3 could alow for the compressor to be run on the "inside" leaving the 3 slots free for single FX. That would make it perfect for my settings.
-
For me class-D nails "my tone", i like a clean and natural bass tone with note-to-note definition even when playing faster lines. The low-mids have all the trouser-flapping i'll ever need on stage. I must point out that i always go through PA, even in pub gigs so i don't need to fill the venue with my rig. I think this may be the prime cause for most people going for class-A, i know a lot of bands on your side of the pond only use PA for vocals.

Just had a look at Old Smoothie, isn't that a 5-string pickup on a 4-string bass? Any technical/tonal/sonic advantage in this?
-
I like that they kept at least two parametric mid controls. It's a function lacking in many other brands, i would love to have an extra parametric in my shuttle. Only flaw i see here (appart from that on/off compressor) is the power rating, now that the competition is lauching the 700/800W models with the nem ICE modules they may be left behind. I still believe that if Mesa had released their new amp with the Walkabout's preamp they would have a winner.
They claim this will match older amps. I also like the fact we have a company saying that class d doesn't match older tech (till now apparently). From Darkglass Since bassists adopted them, class D amplifiers were seen as convenient version of much bigger and heavier, yet better sounding, amps. Most musicians were happy with compromising sound and power by saving money, weight and space. So a year ago we set ourselves up to end these compromises. We wanted the best sounding amplifier period: louder, more versatile and articulate. It just happens to be one of the lightest, most compact and elegantly designed bass amplifiers out there. Fully designed and built in Finland. We present you the Microtubes 700."
So, i take that it doesn't have a B&O power amp and PSU module. I'm curious to know if they designed a new amp section like Markbass did. Going off-topic, it seems that i'm one of the few that actually prefers class-D to old and heavy amps. The "heft" that some mention for me translates in to boominess and muddy on stages. In pub gigs the lack of sub-bass from class-D is really helpfull, it helps the bass being heard better at lower volume and doesn't mess with the mics in the drum kit. This NYE i've played at a very big event (around 10k audience), we were opening the evening and had to switch the gear for the second act very quickly during the mid-night fire works so i took the Shuttle instead of the big rack for practicability. I kicked in the bass boost filter and haven't missed anything tonewise and volumewise during that gig. It made me reconsider carting the heavy rack for those outdoor gigs.

Wasn't this discussed some time ago. I think i remember reading something like the B3 couldn't be updated to a B5 beacuse of the processor's capacity. I think it was something to do with the bass signal using more resources to be processed.

So they went for a PJ and a P in a J and P type bodys... where have i seen that? From the close ups i was hoping that they would look more like the Sabre basses, in body shape.
(...) The small/high powered amp market is becoming very crowded!
And prices don't seem to be dropping. Shoudn't class-D with amps being put together with computer soldered SMD PCB's and sharing generic OEM parts in the PSU and power-amp modules be way more cheaper by now? The only real R&D seems to be on the preamps and they don't vary as much also. We're, again, paying for the brand...

Roqsolid over here too. Ordered a cover for my BF Super12 and fits like a glove. Strong and durable, been using it over a year now and it still looks brand new, no scuffs or tears.
