Not in my experience it doesn't. Maybe it has something to do with what Manton alerted me for in his previous post, there may be some of the products that have silicone or other substances that may seal the dirt in but the one i've been using (the normal type, no waxes or oils) efectively cleans the FB. I can see the results, the grime ends up on the cloth and the wood is clean.
Of course it can't be left on the FB for ages. A quick spray through the FB followed by some elbow work with a thick cloth (old toothbrush rub if needed) and leave it to dry after finishing with a dry cloth. Then it just needs some lemon oil... etc. etc.
Again - conflicting advice - I heard that using pledge or other furniture type polishes just seals the dirt into the grain rather than lifting it off and cleaning it.
Absolutely, I don't think anyone is calling anyones preferences into question, it's just that some people may be making those decisions based on the view that <Mr Mackie Voice> 'buffers are bad' </Mr Mackie Voice>, when that isn't true Si
Yes, i remember, a long time ago (8-10 years!) came that fashion with the true-bypass and boutique pedals. At that time i must admit i got convinced with the TB arguments but technology evolves and buffered designs keep getting better and better. And, as you say, even the boutique manufacturers are going back to buffers. Maybe in the future they start making buffered pedals with a mini-switch on the back to bypass the pedal in case of of a malfunction... but Boss pedals never break...
I wasn't suggesting that you need the B7K , simply that it's not just mass produced Boss pedals with buffers. Some circuit designs simply require a buffer. You're right, your setup isn't really effected by the true bypass issue, but lets take a guy with maybe 20 pedals on his board, using 3" patch cables between each of them. That's an extra 60" of cabling being added to the distance between the bass and amp. A buffered pedal will negate that if placed correctly in the chain. Si
Sure, i understand what you're saying about the buffering. I just want to clarify that it was the sound that made me choose this setup (B3 isn't on the board, it's a backup or used on smaller gigs/rehearsalls). It was a happy coincidence to end up with all TB. Pitchblack vs TU2/3 - PB is about the same price, bigger screen, a tad better tracking. MXR octave vs OC-2 - MXR has a more "natural"/"organic" sound, the Boss is too "synthy" for what i want to use it. B3K vs ODB-3 - no explanation needed, is there? 3Leaf GR vs AW-3 - The 3Leaf sounds warmer, it doesn't peak or quack like the otehr filters i've tried (even the rest of 3Leaf product line is to quacky), the break up is lovely. Multicomp vs LM-3 - The multicomp does a very light compression on my top end, removing the harshness of pops and fx, it doesn't mess with the dynamics, the LM tend to raise the volume when i play softer and smashes the sound when i dig deeper. It's MY personal taste.

All the interest i might have (not much given the price tag) has worn off since i got the news that Jeff Genzler is back in business! Horses for courses, though.

Love that colour, i was hoping to find a TRB5P just like your 4P but this red came up first and they're getting harder to find for sale. -
Hate to be "this guy" but I've seen you mention using water to clean a fingerboard a few times now and it's really not a good idea. Water can raise the grain of Rosewood and is guaranteed to swell the wood at the fret slots which can lead to all kinds of nasty things. It's not a good idea even on a finished Maple board as it can get under any small chips, nicks or marks and crack the lacquer. Again I really don't want to sound like I'm having ago at anyone and hope you don't mind me advising against it . Staying on topic, Ghost Bass's answer is a good one just make sure your chosen cleaning product has no silicone in it (if it's made for guitars chances are it won't).
I agree on the water issue, it shouldn't be used on a fretboard even on a laquered one. there's a big risk that the frets may start to pull up. I never payed attention to the silicone thing but now i'll start reading the labels before buying. I use this standard product: Searching for this pic i found out that this brand also has this product: I may try it next time. Going off-topic now: @Manton - What happened to that old guitar you were recuperating? I lost the thread and can't find it. I would like to know how it ends up, i was loving your work. Cheers
I'd argue that your reasoning for having true bypass isn't necessarily what all the fuss was about. But still, you're probably doing yourself out of some good pedals (not just Boss that are buffered, the Darkglass B7K isn't true bypass for example) when all you need is a small true bypass looper in a 1590a enclosure. Means you can have a single input/output point on your pedal board for your bass and amp, if your pedals die, simply hit the switch and you're direct to your amp. The issue with true bypass is that if you have a lot of pedals, you're simply adding the amount of cabling in-between all those pedals to the total distance between your bass and your amp, which can lead to tone & signal loss (if you're using a lot of true bypass pedals). Stick a buffered pedal somewhere in the equation and it effectively resets the distance between the bass and the amp from that pedal (if that makes sense). Which is why you see guys with all true bypass pedal boards with little 1590a boutique buffers (because they obviously desperately need a true bypass tuner and a boutique buffer and not a Boss TU-2 lol) Si
I have no need for a buffer, the less pedals in the board the better, and my bass has more than enough output for the signal to survive the journey and still clip the amp/mixer It also helps that i use quality cables and plugs. Regarding the B7K, i don't need another preamp, i have one on the bass, that paired with the pan pot and right hand positioning give me all the EQ i need. The B3K is perfect for what i need it to do.

Fretboard dirt: Spray some wood cleaning product over the fb and let it soak in the gunk for a minute. Scrub with a thick cloth. Repeat operation until everything's off. If the dirt is too stiff then you have to use some (very fine grade) wire wool to scrub it out. Bent neck: If there are no strings on the neck then it's perfectly normal that your neck has a bit of backbow with the truss completely loose. This may mean that your truss rod only acts in one way (forgot the correct term for this). Once you put in some strings you'll see it bend in the opposite direction. As ubit said, the necks can shift a lot without damage. Don't worry about it until you get some strings in there. I have a P-clone bass at home tha does this same thing, if i take off the neck it won't sit straight but the tension of the strings pull it back on place. If it's still bending back with strings then you'll have a problem.

I've chosen my pedals (see sig) with a specific sound in mind and none of the Boss can take a place on my board. They're not bad and they do sound nice but not as good as what i have on the board ATM. The true bypass issue is a big deal for me, i power my pedals with a psu and if it fails i just have to turn all switches off and keep playing the song.

What can I use to clean and restore ebony fretless neck please?
Ghost_Bass replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
To get rid of the gunk i use the normal furniture cleaning spray that everybody has at home. Then, after a good wipe with a dry cloth i apply lemon oil and let it soak in for a couple of minutes and wipe the excess off with a dry cloth. -
You can get one of those compact mini headphone mixers and plug the tuner out to it and then take your headphones feed but i'm pretty sure that the tuner out is pre-EQ so you won't be getting the amp's sound on your phones. The best option would be to get your signal from a post-EQ DI out in to a mixer and plug your phones there. (don't forget to turn off the volume of the amp) I have one of these in my computer and it's nice for practise alongside with some youtube videos or mp3. I can either hear from the PC's speakers, hook it up to my bass amp or use phones.

Get a cloth underneath the strings or else you'll be wearing the frets when the bass is inside that case. Nice find BTW

This week i let the Ken Smith go and got myself a couple of Yammies to join my TRB5PII. I'm very happy with the trade, Yamaha is MY sound and they sure knew how to make them back in the days. I know myself too well to know that the BB won't be here for long, i'm a 5-stringer and it will end up hanging on the wall so keep your eyes opened for an add in the FS secction (after i play with it for a while). Here are the first pics (i'll get better ones when i have the time) Yamaha BB1000S - 07/1985 - MIJ Yamaha TRB5P - 02/1992 - MIJ Yamaha TRB5PII - 05/2000 - MIJ Needless to say that they all play very well and the sound is pure bliss. A very happy bunny over here
Nice recommendations, thanks all. I'm surprised and pleased that they aren't all £££ Mr Ghost, I have some on the wall and they hang there like the works of art that they are. But some still lean against walls. I'm trying to reduce my collection down to 4 or 5 (3 are in the basses for sale section), but it's hard letting them go. I'll send you a PM bobthedog. Cheers Jack
It looks to me that what you really need is to get a bigger house with more wall space

Yep. My TRB isn't a light bass at 5kg, the Contego bag doesn´t make it much heavier to haul but if i put the B3 or the Promethean head on the bag plus some cables the whole thing turns in to a pain in the a** to carry. I have a travel case (trolley) where i store all the cables, amp heads, fx, mics, etc. I can get to a venue in one very easy travel, bass on the back, trolley in one hand and S12T on the other. I only have to carry the weight of the bass on my shoulders the rest is on wheels.

+1 for separate vol/tone for each pickup. Much more versatile and you can get the best of each pickup at any time. You can use the remaining hole on the control plate to add a blend or select switch if you wish for even more options and better control on-the-fly. Remeber, Leo allways got it right the first time
