1.
Well im sorry to say i've been outvoted on this We had a band meeting on this subject last night. I took forward the views expressed here, of seperates, with an active speakers and passive mixer etc, but i may aswel not have. As far as anyone else in the band were concerened the decision should go to a sound engineer who is a friend of the band. I'm well aware he has more knowledge of all this than i do, but i do worry that the setup he has recommended is not ideally suited for us. The main issue being no one else in the band really has any idea of how a P.A works, so they are taking his word on it, and not listening to any of the points i am concerned about, also it will be left to me to set up when we do get it. He has recommended a Behringer digital mixer. I've no idea how to use one of these to their full potential and i can see problems on the horizon here. There are other issues, but i dont think theres much point in going into them. As a 6 piece band, i was out voted 5-1 . Democracy rules
What is the full list of gear reccomended by the sound guy? You shouldn't have to set up the gear by yourself. Have the rest of the band study the manual and do their part of the work, it's their obligation as a "democratic band". In my band everybody works setting up the stage, each of us may not know everything about the gear operation and EQing the band sound but we all know how to carry and setup the gear and hooking up all the cables and even doing the most basic/common operations in the mixer. We never know when somebody needs to get to a gig late so we can't rely on a single person to do a specific job.
2. My first try would be: Bass Line 6 G30 Wireless Receiver Korg Pitchblack Chromatic Tuner Boss OC2 Octave Darkglass B3K Microtubes Overdrive BBE Sonic Maximiser Hartke Bass Attack Boss CE2 Chorus Boss DD20 Digital Delay Amp But i've never tried the maximizer or the bass attack, only know them from tube reviews so i would have to fiddle a bit with them and B3K to find the best order. Also, if you want to use the DI on the bass attack, you'll have to move it to the end of the chain but it won't, probably, sound as good with chorus and delay before it.
3. Can't you hang them on the wall? It would look way nicer and keep the floor free.
4.
We are in the process of looking for a new P.A system. As a 6 piece motown/soul band with keys and a small brass section. We have a good idea of the kind of set up we are going to get. I just wanted to get a few opinions on what you think would work better for us..... We have about £2500 and are planning on getting two tops and two subs, with two monitors. (...)
If it was me this is what i would be aiming at: I don't know how many channels you need on the desk, it will depend on the number of channels taken by the drums and vocals but you can get the 20 channel mixer and skimp a bit on the monitor (going for the lower model or even for one with a 8" driver). It fits your budget and i'll bet you'll be very pleased with the sound this setup can put out EDIT: this is from Thomann
5. +1 for passive mixer and active cabs. These days, with class-D and Neo you can get great PA speakers loud enough and not very heavy. My current PA is a Yamaha passive mixer (MG16/6Fx) going to two active dB Technologies 15" subs and from there we take a x-over out for the active tops (RCF ART312a). Sounds awesome. In the future we'll replace the db's for RCF subs.
6. Do you play often in the same venue? Could there be a faulty electric intalation? Can you connect the 4 amps failing to a gig on a particular venue? It can also be the electrics in your house/practise room.
7. I believe it all comes down to amp design. I have a Shuttle 9.2 and with a flat setting it lacks low-end but i also have a class-D Promethean head and it puts a lot of class-AB amps on its pace. I also have a class-H poweramp that´s heftier then a lot of class-AB i've heard. So it's not a rule, in most situations AB has more rumble than a D but there are exceptions.
8. Ask the tech for pics of the wiring of the cab and post them here for us to see what's happening inside. You shouldn't be able to drive it with the 130 so it's possible that it has been rewired previously. Also, ask the tech to measure the cab impedance, if it has really been rewired.
9. The niche i'm talking about are not only busking, i'm talking about dixie bands that walk through the street while playing. Over here in PT you see a lot of this. The grat majority does this on city hall organized and (very well) payed events so they have the money for this. There's nothing on the market that you can strap on your body, like a backpack, and use as a personal monitor for this kind of gigs. From head i'm thinking that keyboard, guitar, mandolim, banjo, vocals, etc. will be very interested in this kind of solution. The horns overwhelm everithing on those bands. I'm thinking about a 1x8 in a compact box will do the trick. My idea strated because my KB player uses a RCF ART 708a as key monitor and the volume and lows it pumps out are incredible for it's size and weight. He told me if only it had a battery it would be the perfect busking amp. I'm sure that Alex can come up with something even lighter and louder BTW. aren't we talking about a Behemoth design? Something new and unique? The marketing is another story... "If you build it they will come..."
10. How's the height from each string to the fretboard, near the headstock? Could this have been made on purpose to even out the height of each string?
11. Barefaced Behemoth? Suggest a big crazy cab for us to add to the range! (And tell us why we should...) Does it have to be big? I had another idea when talking with my keyboard player, he also plays in a dixie band and takes his keboard with him when they go out busking (complicated system to atach it to his body). His main problem is amplification, mainly the low-end reproduction on the existing busking amps. So why don't you take your new amp design for the active cabs, add your knowledge in light-weigh cab building and create the ultimate busking amp? Ultra light, great sound, nice lows, big output (loud as F**K!). Just have to think about the battery Is there a niche for this?
12. I've had P's J's, PJ's, PH's and HH's. The P isn't for me because i never use the neck pickup soloed, it always lacks a bit of bite and definition from a bridge pickup. But i prefer the P sound to a J sound on the neck pickup, it's bigger, smoother. So for me a PJ (or PH) is a must have but i like to have a split-coil J on the bridge to act as humbucker. A P with a single coil J on the bridge tends to get a bit noisy in some venues and sounds unbalanced (to my ears) in terms of output, maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me... BTW, i don't play with a pick and my music preferences/bands are around funk/r&b/hip hop/soul, not many rock themes, the bridge pickup has to be there!
13. Is this like yours? How are the threads looking on both sides? Do they seem worn? Can you pull the stand out of the base without unscrewing?
14. Ashdown Mi10 is a very decent cab with a reasonable output. There's always the combo option, from Markbass to AER or, if you can find a used one, the Ibanez/Harley Benton/Red Sub 500W 1x10 combo is awesome for it's size and weight.
15.
(...) I would love to have something which sounds at least as good as my 2X12" but is a 'one-hand carry'..... (...)
Sorry to point out the obvious, i can easily lift/carry my Super12T with just one hand. Even easier if i decide to keep it on the floor and use the wheels 2x12"+T, 19Kg, nice low-end, flat(ish) voicing Maybe you should see if you can try one.
16.
The price increase, I assume comes from Protec. Whilst researching the case, I found an old thread whereby it was mentioned the Thomann price was cheaper than cost price from the UK distributor to a certain shop.
Thanks for the info. I love the Contego but i must see if it's worth spending that kind of money to store a backup bass that'll be out of the house half dozen times a year... The bass certanly worths it but i think i'll just take the heavy harcase on those few gigs.
17. It's expensive! I got mine from there some time ago for about 85€, now they have it for sale at 120€!!! Crazy price! I'll have to think more about this...
18. Just an off-topic question here, do you know the cheapest places to get one of these? I'll need another for an incoming bass
19.
I have the same reaction to new Pro-steels, but the flexsteels take it further to the point where I actively didn't want to pick the bass up. No point having a lovely bass when I didn't want to touch it!
Ouch! You're right about that. I'll try a set of FlexSteel just to find out for myself but i'll also order a set of Prosteels just in case... That new string "harshness" (is this a word???) is a bit uncomfortable and sometimes the tip of the fingers hurt a bit (if the hands are too dry) but it only takes the first playing hour to get it to settle. Sometimes i use a bit of that Dunlop string conditioner when installing new strings just to keep it lubrified.
20. Can't you rewire the Retro2-10 from 4 to 16ohms? i would guess it has two 8 ohm drivers connected in paralel, if you change it to series you would get the 16ohm, switch the pad in the amp from 8 to 16ohms and you're good to go. Of course you will need to talk to Alex first to see if this is a possibility.
21.
Ooft that's some difference! Could have a market here. You buy in your stock from the UK for half the price then sell it on at Portuguese prices You can thank me later
Naaa, i don't do that. I sold that bass the next year for the same price i got it for. My profit was a year of free SR5 ownership
22. A few years ago i bought a brand new Musicman Stingray5 online (in a UK store) for 1400€ (with shipping included), at that time stores in Portugal had a price tag on them of about 2300€!!!
23. It fits! I had a VM-5 and i can confirm this. The Contego also fits a Yamaha TRB-5PII (35" with a big headstock) easily.
24.
I put a set of Flexsteels on my Sandberg and I'm not getting on with the feel under my fingers. Great sounding string, but I'm going back to Pro-Steels I think.
Could you explain, please? I don't like the feel of the ProSteels the first time i use every new set, they feel too dry and harsh but at the end of the first gig they get smoother and feel way better. Could this be the case with your set of FlexSteels?
25.
So am I. Many PA subs don't go as low as a Big Twin 2.
OK, but the sound i have in my head is of a RCF PA, 12" top over a 15" sub.
