I use the EBS Multicomp because it smoothens the peaks without loosing dynamics, that's why, for me, it works better at the end but if i was using one to keep my signal constant (boosting and cutting volume to keep the sound ot the same level) i would probably try it on top of the chain first.

I would go for the Aguilar, yu can use it to knock coconuts down by banging with it on the tree without worring about ruining the valves and that seems like a soft case rack so it will be better as a pilow! Without a bass or cab both would be pointless for anything else But if there were a bass and a cab i would still take the Aggie

  6. Now i see the issue... yep, only trough-stinging... very odd! The only good thing about that bridge is the grooves on the saddles alowing the strings to be adjusted to the poles. Maybe it's time to think about getting a new bridge with both top and trough mounting. I don't think it would bring much health to the flats having them with those cracks.

  11. Well... it's the first fretless that doesn't make me look away imediatly... but then again on the pic there's the headstock featuring on the side so it could be an optical ilusion... I would call it a fake (or montage) unless the top neck piece already comes with fret 0 as part of the system, the alternative would have some wood work done on that area to be able to aply the fret.
  12. I would say that a Precision could be more forgiving than a Jazz but it all comes down to EQ. A neck pickup with the treble rolled off will mask lots of flaws but roll the treble back in and/or add some bridge pickup and the playing becomes more revealing. So i wouldn't use the term "forgiving" to describe any bass in general, only when used in a certain context. That said i can only add that my TRB has got my technique more sharp because it can in fact reveal every bit of a note from bad fretting to variations on right hand attack and that happens no mather how i EQ it.

[/quote] But even the Walter Woods add some vibe to the bass sound, it's voiced to be very balanced and clean sounding in the entire freq spectrum. Any kind of amp will always add something to the sound, the bass player will choose the one that suits him/her better. My personal taste goes for that type of clean sound so it can be able to reproduce the nouances in my playing (attack, right hand pluck position, dynamics, etc.) and leave all the tone shaping to those little boxes on the floor. I know you are more fond of valve amps and i see nothing wrong with it and i still like to hear the sound of valves breaking in, it's just a mather of personal taste and choice for what suits us better on each band context. In all fairness this thread should be split in two cathegories "Best Valve" and "Best Solid State" amp. (Lets not go in to Hybrid territory please ) Cheers

[/quote] You're absolutely right and some bassplayers do look for a change of tone in a amp (valve saturation) for an intended sound but the OP asked for uncompromised tone and i read that as keeping the best possible tone from the bass (fully transparent or not) and in that field Mr Woods is building the most amazing sounding amps (and they're pretty light too!).

  19. Owned a lot of them and always came back to my trusty old 3Leaf GR1. Let me see if i can remember the entire list... Digitech BSW Boss AW-3 EHX Bassballs EHX Bass MicroSynth 3Leaf GR1 3Leaf Proton 3Leaf Wonderlove MXR Envelope Filter Zoom 506 Multifx ...i'm forgetting a couple of them... In sum the key factor here is for you to discover the kind of sound you're looking for. For me the Lovetone Meatball is the sound i love and the reason i always came back to the GR1, the other pedals are modded on the Mutron III sound and i find it too harsh (quacky) for my taste. The Lovetone has a phatter and groovier sound.

  21. Just wish they show more specs on their products specifically Freq Range and Sensitivity on their cabs. I've been thinking about getting a Mi10 for small gigs and home practise with the shuttle but i don't know if it will have enough highs (or lows)...

[/quote] Well, after 3 pages i still havent read a single reply that answers to the main question (c'mon, we all know that a SVT changes the tone, and a lot! add a 810 to it and it won't matker if you're using a sadowsky or a squier affinity!). So here's my answer, for best amp with uncompromised tone i have to say definetly Walter Woods, perfect in any aspect. If i had the money i would own one but i have to settle for the closest i can find i that is the Thunderfunk, great clean tone!
