Is going to a 62 Jazz set-up a good idea?
Ghost_Bass replied to Prunesquallor's topic in Bass Guitars
I had a mexican Classic 50's P that i pimped with a humbucker from the deluxe on the bridge position. I used the '62 wiring with vol/tone for each pickup and on the P pickup i used a .10uf cap that rolled the treble to a true reggae dub. used together i got the feeling that the EQ possibilities were far better than using the vol/vol/tone wiring i got on my J. The only thing to have in mind is to be sure to use resistors coming out of each pot so you can eliminate crosstalk between pickups. Stacked vol/tone will get my vote any time for any J or PJ type of passive bass, i think the only reason Fender changed the wiring was to save some bucks. -

Here's one were the growl is more noticeable, please don't mind that part just before the solo where my guitar player completely forgot to enter... http://youtu.be/RjCJKCzaKz8 -
Thanks - yes it was your thread that spiked my interest! Bass sounds great in that vid, And it looks a stunner. But I'm wondering if it would be a bit (....gropes for words...) polished for what I'm looking for which requires a more (...gropes for words again...) snarley bitey sound?
Na... it's all about my sound, on "valerie" i was using the blend pushed more towards the neck pickup and on "long train running" i was using a lot of the bridge pickup but in both songs i was also boosting the lows. The EQ on the mixer gave the final touch of removing some mid and high bite. I'm currently using a Barefaced Midget T who has lots of mid and treble so i end up taking some of that off on my amps EQ. Let me see if i can get another video with more growl on the bass so you can compare... -

I'm loving my VM-5, it's not really a P or a MM, i would call it a mix of a super P with a super J, you can hear it's sound on my topic: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189796-nbd-sandberg-california-vm-5/page__st__20 you find the videos on the last posts.
But with typical German efficiency it's landed on time.... should be with me Friday
Oh dear... Sandberg should really rethink their carier services, that bass got some knocks along it's way...

I haven't payed too much attention to the bass, this guy has "the funk"!
i really know what you are going through, i was also suffering from thunderfunk gas ... my advice: wait patiently until one shows up and in the meantime try a glockenklang soul II or even better heart rock II. at least you thunderfunk gas will be cured immediatly...
I've tried a Glock rig belonging to a friend of mine, it's really good but it's not my cup of tea, too heavy and can get a bit boomy although i haven't fiddle with the EQ and have the notion that it probably was just the kind of sound he likes to use. I really like a clean and transparent sound without bass/high boosts or mid scoops, the Shuttle is exelent at this but it lacks the deep lows like any other class-D amp and sometimes they're necessary in some rooms.
They'll be throwing snowballs at Satan before I part with mine!

Hi, please state an asking price. As per T&C's even feelers must have a price stated rather than 'allowing offers'. Cheers Shep
Sorry Shep, i know i have to state a price but i really can't say for sure what is the value of this amp that's why i said i would accept offers in the 550-750 interval due to the prices i've seen them being sold over here. Again, i'm sorry if this isn't the proper way of doing things, i thought it would be enough. Anyway the amp is now sold to Ryan Cowell pending the usual stuff. Now someone please offer me a Thunderfunk to buy!!!
You could try a Hartke LH500 in the meantime.... just while you wait for a TF to come up of course!
Thanks for the sugestion but i need to follow my GAS, the WA was bought while i already had TF GAS and this is the outcome. I'll wipe the dust of the old Shuttle and wait for my oportunity on the sales thread. I've recieved an answer from Dave Funk, he's currently only offering the TFB800, he stopped building the 600 because there were not suficient demand. He also doesn't have any dealers, the only way to get it is to buy directly from him (or over here on the sales thread at a far better price and no customs tax, ). I'll wait patiently until someone decides to part with his amp.
-
Got an answer back from Dario, he no longer stocks TF. I'll wait for Dave's reply and see if i can get one from BC in the meantime. I know some of you have more than one TF, stop being so greedy and sell me one!!!
Don't forget to check the impedance of your amp and that of the cabs. 2 x 112 cabs will halve the impedance, so if it's 2 x 8ohm, your amp will need a 4ohm output but will push out more power than a single 8 ohm 212 cab
I haven't even thought about that, i assumed that it was a 2x 8ohm 112 vs 1x 4ohm 212. Yes, impedance will have a lot of importance on the comparison.
-
I also believe that a 212 is easier to move than two 12s, just one ride, of couse i'm talking about Barefaced heavy territory! I had a Epifani 212 who was very light too and i had no problem moving it. For me it's the number of journeys that count, bass on the back, suitcase with amp and cables on one hand and cab on the other = 1 ride!
The TFB550-B is their mainstay..but not sure Dave F is making them anymore. You might want to e-mail him as he gets some come back to him from time to time and he is very accomodating.. That would be my first source. He makes 750-A's and has now put a 600w and 800w in his line-up. The 550-B runs very hot as he doesn't use a heatsink on the 550-B...so NEEDS the fan on all the time when racked. Great amp, great EQ stage for powerful shaping, but no one I know uses it as the sound out of the box is clear right through the power range. Timbre and enhance is all you need if your basses sound good. Tough to get a bad sound, I don't use the smartswitch ( valve type simulator ) which is very subtle, nor the limiter...just plug it is an play. These amps stay focused when you use them...as I do.. on the dials at 2 o'clock and 2 o'clock, which I assume is pushing them as it gets hot. Good quiet amps with post and pre DI, Eallier versions are 550-A's and 440 somethings...which were Gibson chassis. Amp tech looked it over and said they were made by Gibson...but I think that is just the chassis origin and part of its history.which is well documented
Your description jus enhanced my GAS... that's exactly what i'm looking for, clean and transparent tone without messing around with EQ because i love the sound of my basses as it is. I've already sent an e-mail to David but buying new and paying for tax on customs will make it too expensive that's why i was looking for something on the second hand market over here in the EU.
Good decision. I believe one of our BC'ers, Funky Dario, imports TF's into France. I was looking for my TF750 for over a year. It was well worth the wait. These amps are the best I've ever played through.
Thaks for the tip Chris, I'll drop a line to Funky Dario Cheers

Hi, i've set my mind in getting one of these, i've already started a topic on the wanted section and have my walkabout head for trade/sale on the sales forum but i would like to know where can i buy one (new or used) in a store in the european union (so i can avoid custom taxes) just in case one doesn't pop up on BC. My searches on this subject haven't had much luck. I'm not looking for any model in particular but the TFB550-B looks like a good one to get. All the info you can give me about these amps will be very apreciated. Thanks in advance Marco

Here's another video of it (don't mind the mistakes or the second voices... my keyboard player was singing without monition) (choose best quality for full HD)

Hi, i'm thinking about moving on my Walkabout head, it's a fantastic piece of gear that never let me down but i like to have a clean tone so the valves are are not getting much use. I've modded it with a switch so it can have the master volume post DI or pre (factory setting). You can find pics of the head and the mods here: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 [s]Tradewise i'm only looking to get a Thunderfunk, not very picky about wich model, and the necessary money adjustment.[/s] [s]I'm still looking to buy a Thunderfunk, send me your offers![/s]Also sorted on the Thunderfunk! [s]I can look for a direct sale but honestly i don't know how to price it, i've seen prices going from 550 to 750 pounds so i think i'll leave the sale as a feeler and wait for some offers to see how it turns out.[/s] SOLD Send me your offers and a pic or two of your amps I'm currently without net at home so i'm only online on weekdays between 9:00 and 18:00 but i'll have a look at my mail or PM's through my phone and will try to answer as soon as i can. Here's my e-mail: marcorreia.bass [at] hotmail.com Feel free to ask me any questions and i'll be glad to answer anything i can. Regards Marco

I could be up for grabbing it if it turns up to really be a '81 bass. Open the topic and i'll get in touch.

Had another great transaction with Ivan, this time i sold him a pedal, everything went out great as i already expected. Great guy, exelent comunication and a very serious buyer/seller. You can deal with him anytime, i strongly recommend

If it works for you then go ahead. From my experience with MM i must admit that i hate their preamps on the stingrays, IMHO is the only (and a major) flaw on those basses (that and the weight but we all know that tone must come with a price...), i just found them very useless and i've tried a few different MM with 2 and 3 knob EQ. the only ones i liked was on a Bongo and on a Sabre.
-
To further explain the subject i must add this, i had a Stingray5 and i HAD to definetly change the EQ because it pumped too many lows muddying the stage sound and drowning the rest of the band. Since i got the TRB i never touched the thing gain, all tone came out of the pickup mix with the pan together with the right hand attack placement. Having owned the Sandberg for a few days i still haven't found an excuse to fiddle with the EQ exept only to boost a bit of the low end while fooling around at home, in the band i won't be doing that or i'll risk ruining the band's mix
-
That's what the pan knob and your right arm are there for hahaha
-
Why do you even need EQ? The sound is just fine with everything flat!
Awesome man! Good choice going for the highgloss on alder too IMO, saved about a pound in weight over a matt/ash version, and a bit more low-mid growl to boot. Pleased with it?
Yes, i'm very pleased, very vintage sounding. Your description is very accurate, the bass is very light and growls a lot!
That's probably my ideal bass right there. Ticks pretty nearly all the boxes ... P/MM config, active, 5 string, Alder body. I don't suppose there's anyone here in or near London with one of these (4 or 5 string, Alder or Ash body) who'd be able to meet up somewhere for me to try out ? I feel virtually ready to order one but have never played one, so I'm a bit hesitant. Please PM me if you think you could help. Andy
Sorry, i'm from Portugal. I've posted a video on my topic from the gig i did with the bass and next saturday i'm goin to a bass bash where i expect to make another video with more quality with the bass on the hands of somebody that plays far better than me, lol Cheers to you all
